Diablo creator to work on Marvel Universe MMO photo

Gazillion Entertainment announced today that David Brevik, former president of Blizzard North and the man chiefly responsible for the Diablo series, will be taking a position with Gargantuan in the role of Studio Director. The most recent of Gazillion's development studios, Gargantuan is currently tasked with creating Marvel Universe, an MMO based in... well... the Marvel universe of comics.

We haven't really heard much about Marvel Universe, other than it is in production. This is, of course, not to be confused with the Cryptic Studios project which was canceled in 2008. Brevik will be taking the reins of the Gazillion project following his previous position at the now defunct Flagship Studios.

Brevik will also be speaking at Comic-Con this week in a panel entitled, "The State of MMOs: A Discussion with the Developer."  If we're lucky, we may get to learn a little more about what's going on with Marvel Universe there.

A full press release exists somewhere in Earth-295 (as well as after the jump).

Comic-Con 2009

SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gazillion Entertainment, a leading developer, publisher and operator of massively multiplayer online (MMO) games for wide audiences, announced today that former President of Blizzard North David Brevik has joined as Studio Director for Gargantuan. David will lead development efforts of the highly anticipated Marvel Universe MMO for PC and consoles, in addition to heading up the Gargantuan development studio which is located at Gazillion’s headquarters in San Mateo, California.

David Brevik has been a game industry innovator for nearly two decades. Among his many leadership roles, David served as President of Blizzard North for seven years. Notably, David was responsible for creating Blizzard’s Diablo series, for which he was Project Lead, Design Lead and Lead Programmer on both Diablo and Diablo II. The Diablo franchise is one of the top PC titles of all time with over 20 million copies sold. David also launched Blizzard’s online gaming service, Battle.Net, and was involved in key initiatives spanning multiple game and technology projects at Blizzard Entertainment. Prior to joining Gazillion, David was a Director at Flagship Studios.

At the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, David will participate on a panel Q&A entitled The State of MMOs: A Discussion with the Developer with other acclaimed game designers, including Craig Alexander (Turbine), Gordon Walton (BioWare), and Bob Ferrari (Sanrio Digital) on Thursday, July 23rd from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

“I’m a huge fan of comic books, Super Heroes, and MMORPGs, so the chance to lead the creative efforts for the Marvel Universe MMO is an amazing opportunity. Gazillion’s mission to bring MMOs to the mainstream while maintaining the depth in gameplay that enthusiast gamers demand is something that deeply resonates with me,” said David. “Marvel is a perfect fit for this mission, and I couldn’t imagine a better venue to announce our efforts than Comic-Con.”

“As the creative and technical force behind the Diablo franchise and Battle.Net, David is an immensely talented game industry veteran who is responsible for bringing role playing games and online gaming more generally to an extremely large and thankful audience around the world,” said Rob Hutter, CEO of Gazillion. “We’re thrilled that he’s chosen to bring his vision and design leadership to the development of our landmark MMO franchise with Marvel.”

Good to hear but I can't even begin thinking about this game. It won't be out for forever.

Awesome, I can't wait for this to come out.

I'm was a huge fan of City of Heroes and subsequently villains, but ever since Champions Online went down a path I cannot fall, my heart has been yearning for a new prospective love to fill the gaps. On a slightly related note, just thinking about the depth of possible game scenarios the enormous roster of Marvel characters could lead to is making me wet.

Do. Want.

I think a Marvel roster would be better to play than a DC one. It's all going to come down to the gameplay however, with graphics and the game engine being important too.
I just like Marvel's universe better.

I tend to view ex-Blizzard members as traitors. Maybe it's because Hellgate London left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyways, I think the super hero genre is getting crowded, time for a different genre.

Unless the MMO is set in an alternate universe or pre-M day, I kind of seeing this as being "meh" to establish.

Well, the fact DC Universe online will come out well in advance of their game may hurt them some, there are probably die-hard Marvel fans that would never get that game, though I totally gave up on Marvel since they ruined Spider-Man.
