Devs respond to PS3 Ghostbusters controversy, make it worse photo

The ridiculous fanboy wars spilled over into multiplatform territory recently when the PS3 version of Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters was said to run at a lower resolution to the Xbox 360 version. While normal human beings wouldn't really care, controversy happened and now Terminal Reality has issued a statement to counter the claims of inferiority, invardently making the problem sound worse.

"For the record, the PS3 version [of Ghostbusters] is softer due to the 'quincunx' antialiasing filter and the fact we render at about 75% the resolution of the 360 version," explains the studio. "So you cannot directly compare a screen shot of one to the other unless you scale them properly. The PS3 does have less available RAM than the 360 - but we managed to squeeze 3 out of 4 textures as full size on the PS3."

Wow ... they kind of made the PS3 version seem even more inferior. I doubt this will stop the Internet arguments over this game, but if you have both a 360 and PS3 and want the better game, it appears as if Terminal Reality has made the decision for you. Or you could just go for the Wii version. It looks worse than the others, but at least you'll get to feel like you're holding a Proton gun.

I was under the impression that this happened all the time with Multiplat games.

Sorry, my last comment sounded like it was meant to be imflammatory, which it totally wasn't, so I'll rephrase:

I was under the impression that this is quite a common occurence in Multiplat games...

Wait, what? Wasn't the whole point of the PS3 to have the strongest hardware, hence the price tag?

What the devs really should be starting their comment out with, "Due to our ENGINE....."

With that said, I guess I just chose the 360 version.

Actually, it is crippled in some places that allows the Xbox to have very similar capabilities.
Blu-ray read speed is a great example. More textures but they load slower, for instance.

Not surprised. The PS3 is a beast, but I'm not certain whether it can be properly used by gaming developers....maybe NASA engineers or mad scientists. Dr Doom could probably take over the world with it.

Both the PS3 and 360 have the same amount of Ram. This dev is placing the blame on the PS3 since they lack the skill to program the Cell properly. Shit, This is why im not buying anything that Terminal Reality develops.

I remember when DMC4 came out and the comparisons had Xbox360 having much crisper textures.

When I ran DMC4 through my PS3 on my cheapo HDTV, It looked exactly the same as the 360 side of the comparison photos, Crisp, detailed textures.

Comparison's should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

If its built initially for the triple then it will look as good or better than the 360. If not, all multi-plat games work out better for the 360. I have tried several on both systems and the 360 always looks and runs better with the exception of Burnout Paradise.

I limit my ps3 purchases to exclusive titles, and all the rest for the 360. Those by and large look more advanced than just about all the 360 games. So its cost and time limits to develop for two different structures.

How is it crippled? Is it because its not based of off DirectX like the 360? The 360's CPU/GPU is the same as a PC. Stop pretending the PS3 is crippled when games like Killzone and Uncharted 2 look better than anything the 360 has. There are also plenty of third party games that are the same on both platforms.

Out of all the different types of bitching I've read about on the Atari forums about this game, this one is pretty high on the list of most retarded. They should really focus more on the PC version they royally screwed up on. The installation they used is half arsed, it doesn't even give you the desktop/start/quick launch options. Sucks if your a newbie computer user and can't find where the game was installed to run it. Also the game itself has loading issues, even for people with rigs that far surpass the recommended requirements. It's still a beautiful game but the load times are ridiculous.

Also I would love to see them fix the #1 bitched at comment "Where's the PC Multiplayer Co-op we were originally promised?"

looking at joystiq comparison pictures -

1 - my Wii can do that, look at the rug, the desk shadows and the overall blurriness, with the same trickery of LostWinds (depth of field, i think) the Wii could have done that.

2 - Glad they didnīt made the Wii version like that, it sure looks like a PS2 game but at least i can see 2 feet from my nose.

Can someone name one game that looks AND performs better on the PS3 than the 360? I'll buy it.

I've tried nearly every title available for both systems, and at best it's an even comparison.

I love my PS3 as much as anybody, but I've completely stopped buying multiplatform titles for the thing. If it's not the game resolution, it's the framerate. If it's not the framerate, it's strange filtering effects. This means you, GTA4. And you, every EA Sports game made.

Were it not for the rare exclusive and Blu-ray, I'd have eBayed the system a long time ago.

I hate retards, but even more those with no technical background trying to figure technically things out. It's like a monkey trying to explain physics.

The Xbox360 beat's out the PS3 automatically, because it's ram doesn't require any sophisticated coding. If you straight port a game from PC to Xbox360 theres not really to many tweaks needed. However if you straight port from Xbox360 to PS3 then your going to have severe problems. Since the PS3 does not function as an Xbox360 (shocking).

However technically speaking the Xbox360 does not have more ram. As the PS3 throughput is 3x that of the 360 meaing you can stream 3x as much data on a PS3 than on the 360. However if you don't use all aspects of the PS3 then your at a .5 to .8 ratio. The PS3 technically has over 1g of ram if you combine all available MOBO ram and SPU ram.

Just sell the POS. The PS3 sucks anyways. What good games are comming out for it? Nothing! Is PS3 getting the next two Halo games? We all know these new Halo games will be the best games in the universe. Oh, and Alan Wake. That game will destroy anything the PS3 has. Just sell the system. All the exclusives suck. Killzone2 is dirt, Infamouse is horrible, Uncharted is worse than Tomb Raider, The Last Guardian looks like a stupid kids game, and GT5 will never come. Sell it now! I hate the fucking PS3. I would rather have RRoD 10 times than to own a PS3.

... apparently it comes complete with a ghost in the basement and an Ecto-1 gun!

So you can move your props/bluescreens around... make your own Ghostbusters machinima - and probably at better resolution than the game runs! LOL!

They should just said: "Hey, Cell is too complicated and we had a schedule, so we just made the game on the Xbox 360 the ported it to the PS3 with nerfed resolution". It would be a LOT more honest then hiding behind "quincux" shaders.

Also, what grasslunatic said

Also, X360 has 512 MB of GDDR3 and PS3 have 256MB of Rambus XDR DRAM, which is WAY faster than the GDDR3... More on XDR: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDR_DRAM

The PS3 has the same *capacity* of RAM. But it is split in two sections. 256 is *fast* ram, which is used for the GPU and 256 is slower ram which is used as a buffer and system ram. *Effectively* the PS3 when rendering has HALF the usable space for textures than 360 does.

The 360 has 512MB of fast RAM.

I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

Take a breath B. Your defending a PS3 "game" by saying Uncharted and Killzone look better than "anything" on the 360 (subjective by the way) then following it up with a mock xbot message (mind you no crazy xbots have even come forward yet) just serves to make you and the Sony brand look bad.

I mean really, you are ALL over this post...it ain't that crucial. And as someone that owns a PS3....you should be used to this reality by now. Most ackowledge that the Ps3 is powerful, but developers are having problems with it and this truth cannot remain hidden despite how much you or Sony might want it ignored.

This is the worst thing they could have said. But having seen the comparisons, I'm not sure I want to support a company who can't make the two platforms look the same.

If this came out 2 years ago, they'd have an excuse, but PS3 was apparently the lead platform. No sale.

I'll get the Wii version instead.

I don't own an XBOX360 so I don't care, sure it looks fine.

Graphic graphics graphics - that argument bores me. Sure between PS2 and PS3 new graphics was big thing, but slight differences between box and trois, who really gives a fuck?

Plus, it's clear that PS3 developed games are sick, so it's notlikethe hardware lets it down, it's just the devs using lazy ways around porting i9t over to a different system.

Xbox = PC so porting must be easy.

PS3 is a different animal, they either re-do a whole load of work or go "fuck it, we'll just chop that bit down and bodge this bit to make it work"

i love my PS3, couldn't care less if the odd game "looks" slightly better on your errorbox. My PS3 still works.

I'm mostly in agreement with you SC, but if you look at Multi-platform game comparison sites, such as the excellent Eurogamer one, you'll see that even though things have got a lot better for the PS3 in terms of bringing parity to the platforms, it is still practically EVERY Multiplatform game that not only "looks" slightly better on 360, but also they generally "run" slightly better on 360 too...

The lazy comment is slightly unfair - games these days cost a fucking fortune to make, and if that means doing a port for the the PS3 version to remain within budget, then so be it. Sony could give a fuck about third party developers, and that's evidenced by their wonky (yet powerful) architecture. The feeling may have become mutual.

But really, as long as the gameplay is good, most stuff/descrepencies/advantages are barely noticable to the untrained eye.

The problem is TR claimed the PS3 was lead platform, and even boasted several times about how the PS3 was their favorite system to develop on and how they could do so much with the system that they couldn't do on 360. Then the game comes out and it looks like complete blurry shit on the PS3 not to mention it's running at a much lower resolution, And the damn 360 version looks leaps and bounds better. I initially purchased the PS3 version not knowing this, then when BluDesign posted a link in his blog to the comparison shots I was pissed and immediately exchanged for the 360 version and there is a huge difference.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who likes the Wii's artistic direction for Ghostbusters. Maybe it comes from watching the cartoon a bunch when I was a kid?

(This isn't ragging on the 360/PS3 versions, but sometimes I prefer stylistic animation over the "trying to be real but not quite good enough" graphics that get trotted out all too often.)

@Volomon:

"The Xbox360 beat's out the PS3 automatically, because it's ram doesn't require any sophisticated coding."

Wrong. Apparently, it's the Cell and the multi-threaded architecture that is making developers whine like babies.

"However technically speaking the Xbox360 does not have more ram. As the PS3 throughput is 3x that of the 360 meaing you can stream 3x as much data on a PS3 than on the 360. Both systems have an equal amount of RAM. The 360 has 512MB of DDR3 RAM @ 700Mhz and 10Mb of EDRAM (can't find the spec, but it's really fast, although only 10MB). PS3 has 256 of DDR3 video RAM, and 256MB of XDR RAM @3200 Mhz (matches CPU clock speed) for the Cell and all it's SPU's to share. In any case, the Cell can access the RSX RAM to assist with vertex calculations and such.
