Developers say Wiimote is more than just a TV-breaking projectile photo

While the first crop of Wii games have been average at best and for the most part, haven't fully taken advantage of Nintendo's unique control scheme, one development group is already speaking up about the controller's potential. Eurogamer has the info from Ed Bradley (not the 60 Minutes dude):

It can certainly spew out a lot of useful info. The tricky bit is making meaningful use of it all. At the end of the day developers want players to have fun rather than impose clever mathematics on them, so if it turns out to be fun only using a simple subset of the controller's gizmos then why worry about how "proper" it is?

Personally I think the controller is capable of translating actions far more complex and energetic than most players are interested in performing even in the privacy of their own homes. Sort of a "just because we can it doesn't mean we should" situation.

Clearly, if the Wii is to survive, we need the games that take full advantage of the Wiimote. For Nintendo's own good, this better come sooner, rather than later.

I agree, we need it going at full potential. The wiimote must detect every breath, heartbeat and fart to deliver the latest gaming experience.

I'm of the rare breed that does not feel Zelda's controls were tacked on. At all. They feel just as they should, as though the game had been developed for the Wii. Which for the last year prior to the games release it was.

Chris : THANK YOU. I agree, fully. I couldn't imagine playing Zelda without the Wii controls. How the hell would they fit all those moves into the controller? It really does flow. Like my ass after a 30 dollar meal from taco bell. Erm, scratch that.

Yeah I thought the controls for zelda were pretty smooth on the Wii unlike a certain world war 2 game for the console.

Oh God, I'm glad they changed the design of the Wiimote. That sensor there just looks horrible.

This is my first Zelda game and I love it, I'm a Zelda convert. The Wii controls are good, but I do feel that it is tacked on in some parts. Clawshot controls, bows and arrows, and other ranged weapons are spot on. The ball and chain, I wish I was actually the one rotating it, a la rayman raving rabbids. I wish the swords were more accurate(like If I do a forward slash coming from my right, it should be a forward slash coming from my right), but I can understand why they did this. Some of the boss fights are pretty intense and I do feel like I'm the one swinging the sowrd(Morpheel, and the Armoured mini boss was awesome!) so that's point one for the sword control.

Aside from some of the flaws, I wanna echo that I probably don't see myself playing Zelda, or any other action adventure type games without the Wiimote! I was mulling on buying Eternal Darkness and RE4 while I wait for other Wii titles but I'm still on the fence because I have to use a GC controller.

Anyway, back on topic. Enough with these praises!!! Talk is very cheap. Develop some games already and at the very least, announce plans for it!!! God. Test the waters at the very least, even if you announce a port like what EA and Ubisoft is doing.

@ranzchic

Buy Eternal Darkness, you will now regret it. That is one of my top 5 all time and I have played a lot of games across a lot of systems (starting with pong). I have probably played that game all the way through more than anything else I've ever owned.

I still fail to see the logic behind this latest "Wii sux because..." whine. Seems Nintendo is winning over a lot of developer support, for unique titles (you can read that as "exclusives" if you like), that is something the Gamecube could never do.

It's developers who took a wait and see approach that's going to delay this potential from what I've seen. While the 360 and PS3 are getting all new efforts (understandable for the 360 since it's been a year already) such as Gears of War, Oblivion, Metal Gear Solid 4, FFXIII, etc. long before success of such systems were absolute, the Wii got a bad hand and tossed half-way into the Cube's grave. It got weak original efforts like Red Steel, lousy ports like Far Cry if not just more PS2 ports. We don't even know how well S-E's games are going to be since the last time they said they'll provide a game for the N-fans we got FF:CC (take that as you will). Capcom has only one game that even reaches RE4 standards and it's probably just a recap edition of the previous installments. And Konami, well Wii gets Elebits but the PS3 gets MGS4. IMO, that's rather a stark contrast in effort and financing distribution, at least from a supposed hardcore gamer's perspective.

@guestworld

I agree with you that many developers probably got taken aback with the current popularity of the Wii and is scrambling to change their gameplan and devote more resources to the console. Only Ubisoft really was dedicated and as much as Red Steel was a disappointment, we at least got Rayman Raving Rabbids. It's not an exclusive but let's see you play that on the 360, PS2 or the PC so it's practically a "Wii game".

The beauty of it though is that this is a Nintendo console, a company that also publishes many AAA titles and franchises. Any other console from another company probably would never survive.

EA's titles, even its port looks promising, SSX Blur looks like it will be fun and the Godfather: Blackhand also looks like it will be taken on a whole new dimension when it was announced on the Wii. Madden might just have been revived on the Wii. Of course, all we can do is wait and see if these titles are any good. But it's a start. It frustrates me but it can't be helped. It's the developer's fault for sidelining the Wii in the beginning and I'm looking forward to SSBB, Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime in the mean time.

As much as I love the Wii, I'm aware that it could easily become a gimmick. Developers need to be sure that, in the long run, they make more games than "omg look motion detecting lawl!" like Wario appears to be, or else the Wiimote will get stale real quick and Nintendo will thus lose their market lead.

zelda controls do feel a bit tacked on, and honestly that's exactly what was done, and it shows. however, i'm sure many games are on the way that will take better advantage of the wiimote abilities. for example in zelda, to stab, why do i have to press a button and stab simultaneously to do this action? it's for sure not intuitive, which is the whole point of the wii controls. shouldn't it be sophisticated enough to recognize me just stabbing? of course it should! and i'm absolutely sure it could have been done if they had the time. that's just one example; there are a few others about zelda. not to bash the wii, since zelda is a launch title, but i'm sure there will be games making better use of the wiimote. as far as launch titles, the games that make the best use of the wiimote are trauma center, wii sports & elebits. the controls for zelda and red steel do need a little work. i don't think any other titles at the moment truly show the potential of the wiimote outside of those 3 games. hopefully more are coming....

See, the problem I kinda have with the Wii is...what kind of games can they really make that don't feel so gimicky? Will you find an Oblivion type game, a Metal gear, a Gears of War? Probably not. Sports games....I would rather play them on the 360, better graphics, better controls. So where does that leave us? Metroid...Mario. Ok, Metroid should be cool, but it looks like the same game I played twice on the gamecube. Mario, will it use the wiimote in a way that is so revolutionary?

I think we all hope they release a really cool Star Wars game, or a full fledged baseball game, bowling, golf. I would love to see a game where it was a first person Oblivion type game where YOU controlled the shield with the nunchuk and the sword with the wii mote. Can they do that? I don't know. I just hope they try.

Summa, go fuck yourself. Seriously. I'm tired of your bullshit "PS3 just needs time to get into it's thang" while saying "the Wii stuff sucks and they need better stuff NOWWWWWW!!". Jesus fucking Christ. IT'S A FUCKING LAUNCH. And you know what? It wasn't a BAD launch. It sure kicked Sony's launch in the ass. But since it's Nintendo, I guess we can spend the rest of our days just doubting them, since everybody knows that graphics always wins, even though there has yet to be a time where that was actually the case. Sony needs more help than Nintendo does, and they have a lot more to prove.

@ siskoeva:

I recognize that pic as being part of the Red Steel pre-release feature, it's an earlier version of the Wiimote.
