Developer trashes the SIXAXIS photo

Yesterday brought a very special Valentine's Day gift from the folks at Computerandvideogames.com (CVG). In it they show us that not everybody loves the SIXAXIS as much as big Ken Kutagari thinks they should. If you've played with the SIXAXIS you might not find this too surprising.

Of course, it would be at this point that the true blue Sonyphile (or Jack Tretton, whom I will now forever refer to as Mr. Fibby McFibberson), would then clearly state that it is only a matter of time before developers learn to utilize the true potential of the controller. While that could quite possibly be the case, it seems that a developer has stepped forth to squash that sliver of hope.

"Tilt control's not difficult to do," says Guy Wilday, head of Sega Racing Studio, on the possibility of tilty-pad gameplay being included in their new version of Sega Rally for PS3. "Fundamentally, though, the whole tilt control thing is rubbish. It's no compensation for rumble."

Looks like Mr. Wilday takes the somewhat dubious position of #2 in the "I'm a developer and Sony makes me grumpy " pantheon.

Sony dropped the ball on the rumble issue.

A big vibrating ball.

Er... let me see if I get this straight, Sony is a bastard because they took out rumble (due to licencing issues) but added a tilt sensor instead. However Nintendo is a demigod because they have a motion sensor that's great for some games but has no calibration which renders some games to almost unplayable levels?

They made the right choice in my opinion, the rumble feature made controlling certain games inaccurate, by not using the rumble feature Sony deemed accurate, responsive control a priority over cheap parlor tricks. If I wanted a controller to rumble, I could just as well waffle my hand from side to side and make a deep growling noise at the back of my throat, and meanwhile, lose an opportunity to strafe my opponent in the beautiful, creative fps Resistance Fall Of Man. The same goes for the Nintendo controller. It's impossible to achieve the accurate control an extreme and hardcore player like myself requires when using the Nintendo interface. When I play an first person shooter, at my skill level, I require an accuracy that so far among the next generation systems only the sixaxis supplies. The innovative tilt technology the sony controller utlizes will be of further use in future first person shooters for hard core gamers like myself, as it will allow me to react more fluidly to enemy fire.

See what happens when you half-ass an idea? It gets trashed.

@Milly

You've got some good points, I ALWAYS turned rumble off. I do not miss it.

Rumble owned. It was the best thing to hit controllers since shoulder buttons. Hence the original dual shock getting an award and not the sixaxis.

I really don't care much for rumble or motion control. The sixaxis could be very immersive with it's tilt functionality but right now it isn't.

Rumble never really seemed immersive. It doesn't simulate recoil from a gun very well. Explosions just don't last long enough to be rumbled well. It's okay to indicate an earth quake but I don't play games with earthquakes that much.
I did enjoy the hand massage.

If they replaced rumble with a recoil like mechanism or force feedback that would rock.

I like the idea of rumble in a first person shooter making it harder to aim. It is more realistic and immersive for me to feel the controller shake as I shoot and thereby alter my aiming as a real gun would when shot. Same for when getting shot by enemies, I shouldn't be able to maintain complete control with bullets going through my body. Unfortunately, no rumble has ever really gotten too much in my way, I actually wish it were stronger in most controllers. I like natural difficulty ups as a result of things like this. It makes more sense than simply giving characters more health or reducing the amount of damage you can take before dying and other artificial difficulty upping techniques.

I personally love rumble, especially when a game uses it in a smart and unique way. Gran Turmiso is going to feel really weird without it.

I really think they should not be coming to conclusions only 3 months after the console's release, now, if by the end of summer this year, there isnt any good motion control games, then yes, it is a wasted effort.

I sure hope you're being sarcastic, Milly. I love rumble in my controller. It provides one more bit of feedback that makes gaming more immersive and fun.

Seriously, I've tried playing Crazy Taxi on my Dreamcast without rumble and I suck horribly. With the rumble, I have instant feedback on whether or not I did the Crazy Dash correctly. And the Wii menu? The rumble gives the menu a sense of texture! And what about games like "Skies of Arcadia" where you can be moving along and rumble gives you a clue something else is happening.

As for "I needs precision to play my fps... blah blah blah", I doubt it. Think about it. When my little bro is owning you in Halo 2, isn't it nice to feel the rumble everytime you're shot. Maybe that's why you don't like rumble. It's a self esteem issue.

By the way, where can I apply to get on Sony's payroll to make ridiculous Sony comments?

Sadly, milly is never being sarcastic. No force in the world can get in the way of milly's blind love for Sony.

Count me as another person who loves rumble and who will buy any cross-platform game for 360 instead of PS3 because of it. Plus, Sony's motion sensing is so imprecise compared to the Wii's.

I think most of us would rather enjoy the accurate controller of the 360 playing Gears of War which looks way better then Resitance on a 54 inch widescreen. You cant tell too much of difference on a regulsr tv - Yes Ive seen them both. My cousin has a 360 and PS3 on HD Widescreen and I have the 360 on HD Wide. He refers to Resistance's graphics as Call of Duty 2'ish..
