Developer D2C calls PSP 'a sleeping giant'

In an interview with Gamasutra, D2C founder and Madden veteran Scott Orr called Sony's PlayStation Portable "a sleeping giant" in terms of possible sales.

D2C has lined up some new titles to be launched this spring for the PSP and WiiWare, including SPOGS Racing, the bull riding title we told you about earlier. Gamasutra asked Orr why he chose these platforms over Xbox Live or PSN. He cited the Wii's mass-market appeal, and added that the PSP is also well suited to the family-oriented, downloadable style games.

"I believe given its installed base and increasingly strong sales, the PSP platform is a sleeping giant just waiting for the right kind of content that’s value priced and easily obtainable," said Orr.

Orr went on to say that he's not ruling out Live or PSN, but he did say that most titles have been "lacking in originality" up until this point.

Do you think the PSP has potential as a source of downloadable games?

Custom firmware wat?

I just don't see PSP really stayin so much on top as the sales show. Yes some passable games are hitting out on it and it's spiking up sales, but in Japan, Nintendo still owns many Japanese souls and most americans who have a psp well...

custom firmware wat?

I traded in my PSP because I just wasn't playing it enough... there are plenty of cool games, but I always seemed to reach for the DS. Load times killed the PSP. End of story. The PSP won't fade completely, particularly in Japan for as long as they continue to make Monster Hunter games, but it's kind of pointless.

The PSP's biggest selling point could be downloadable games. UMD games suffer from long load times and drain the batteries very quickly. Downloadable games could address both issues. If only Memory Sticks were more reasonable.

Whatever, I love my psp, never had issues with the load times on any of my games. I also own a DS, I rarely play it, NSMB was a let down, MKDS snaking killed he fun in that, castlevania is a lot of fun though. However, most of the rest of the games on the DS are puzzle games/shovelware so I dont own any of them. I also own more games on my PSP than on my DS, but ill never sell either of them.

I like both systems, and I own both, there are enough games with some depth to keep me PLENTY busy on each system. The DS has a lot of shovelware but on the other hand it also has a ton of RPG games with more constantly coming out and a lot of Point and Click games such as Phoenix Wright that the PSP does not have. Unfortunately retail stores here in the US do not seem to stock the good games that the DS has, and you have to look a little harder to find them and be willing to wade through the plethora of Petz and puzzle games to get to the good stuff. Retail stores don't seem to stock ANY PSP games here whatsoever, so its online shopping all the way for me.

I think the puzzle games on the PSP are a lot better and much more engaging than the ones on the DS, which just seem to be variants of each other that are consistently rebranded. Stuff like Echochrome and Practical Intelligence Quotient get me going more than moving around colored blocks.

Games on the PSP provided you go for older games are also cheaper than the DS. The new stuff like Crisis Core is more expensive but at least the titles drop in price unlike certain DS games which take forever to drop or just don't drop at all, not even for used copies (if you play 1st party games). I play 90% 3rd party games for the DS so the games I buy drop in price nicely and I don't have this problem.

Memory sticks have also gotten VERY reasonably priced for the PSP and I only expect them to go down more in price. I got a 4gb sandisk card for 40$ a few months ago from staples.com and no it was not a fake from ebay. The memory stick is what really makes the PSP, without a decent memory stick you cannot do anything with the console, and this is from someone who doesn't even have CFW.

It's true, but the way it launched, not getting enough attention, I wouldn't expect that to change. It's a powerhouse, but it didn't do enough to draw attention early on.

I would love to see that change, though.

PSP's been sleeping for a while now then, hasn't it? Granted, it's picking up speed and really becoming a solid platform, but I don't see it exploding into the limelight anytime soon.

I love the psp, it deserves more great titles. I just play way more console games, time is thin for portables for me. I have to get God of War COO though.

I own a PSP and a DS, and I like them both. However, from first hand experience, the people that I know who buy PSPs are people who think the DS is 'gay' or for 'little kids' and graphics whores. These are the same people who bought 50 Cent Bulletproof, mind you.

Well its starting to wake up, all it needs is a few more must buy titles, now is a good time since the DS is turning into the Wii V2, tons of shovelware and gimmicky crap and one or two good games(some good ones ruined thanks to the stylus crap).

There's plenty of games that I have for the PSP, but most of them are either cheaper $20 things or big AAA titles on the level of GoW or Crisis Core. Same with my DS, actually; I don't normally go out and spend the same, or close to the same, amount on a portable game as I do on a console game. If a big expensive release comes out that I have a particular inkling for, I just wait a few months. Prices go down much faster in the portable sector. But then you get games like echochrome and Patapon, which are excellently priced and were week one purchases for me. Excellent value for my $30.

When the PSP drinks the Water of Life to become the Kwisatz Hadarach, then I'll know it's time to get one.
