Not when they're flat out demonstrably wrong.
http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2011/02/09/psn-sales-figures-announced/
"The figure, which includes PSN games (but excludes PSOne titles) shows ‘significant growth’ for the platform, with FADE (Forecasting & Analyzing Digital Entertainment) suggesting that year-on-year growth during the second half of the year was 40%, outpacing Xbox Live Arcade’s 18% increase."
"Ubisoft’s ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’ was, says FADE, the “best selling title for the 2nd half of 2010 with 190,000 units sold”, with XBLA title ‘Castle Crashers’ the top-grossing game for the 2nd half of last year, earning $2.1 million USD “from an estimated 143,000 units sold”."
The article is worth a read. This guy isn't spouting opinions. He's spouting outright falsehoods.
Also, SMB is actually a good game and for someone who hasn't released a single game to bash someone who ACTUALLY HAS MADE a good game is also childish. SMB has great precision in their platforming while Nine Dots' game "Brand", a Castlevania wannabe, looks like it doesn't.
Yup, these people are just ruffling some feathers for some free publicity.
That is why they have worked with some of the most critically acclaimed people in the indie game scene on more than one occasion. That is why just last night they had a "lets give out a bunch of shit for free for no reason whatsoever war" with Notch from minecraft on twitter where the folks from Team Meat, Minecraft, and Bastion all gave out a total of about 100 codes for free games.
Because the indie scene hates them. Yeaaaaah....
Anyway I wouldn't call psn a failure, but it is vastly inferior to XBLA.
You are citing a Sony fan blog using "estimates" for sales figures as your source for an unbiased opinion?
I can see your stance on the subject is entirely neutral. /sarcasm
http://www.gamerzines.com/ps3/news/psn-sales-figures-august.html
There ya go grumpypants. Similar article from a neutral site. Google-Fu is magical.
Honestly though, while the game looks "interesting" the thing looks like a 3rd rate metroidvania attempt but without any of the cohesive artstyle of either Metroid or Castlevania. Mismatched music for the trailer gives low hopes to its atmosphere. And the camera is downright crap, they need to fire whoever throught of adding "shakey cam" to the gameplay. I do hope that the game succeeds and I wish them the best in their future releases, but if Brand is going to release soon then they have a lot of hurdles to jump very quickly to make it more than a game that looks good in screenshots and nothing else.
Yes I am a PS3 player. I think the marketplace selection is okay when compared to the Xbox.
And your stance is... what? The opposite of Tristrix's "neutral?"
I mean, I'm all for pointing out flaws in other peoples' methodologies (in this case sources cited) but to do as much about which site is linked... I mean, it takes 20 seconds to find an alternative link with similar or opposing information.
Instead of competing in this I shall simply post a picture.

I'm with Epic. I don't think PSN is a failure, but i prefer XBLA games to it.
@Cody
Really? Are we still going with the "microsoft moneyhats" angle again?
Preference is perfectly cool. I'd never argue with you on that. I'm simply pointing out that this guy Jim is quoting in the article is a lying asshat because as far as sales figures go, XBLA and PSN are damn near even on multiplatform sales. Quote from the article I linked earlier...
“Today, that advantage is nearly even with first-month typical sales being 55/45 among new titles like ‘Costume Quest’, ‘Pac-Man CE DX’, and ‘X-Men Arcade’” said Benjamin Schlichter, Director of Research & Analysis at FADE LLC.
Either way PSN is not even close to a failure. I personally like it better than Live, and it's free.
As a gamer, you can never complain about free ;D
After his bullshit game comes out, I think Team Meat should send him a cake of Meat Boy giving the finger and it should be delivered by Kevin Butler.
Not knowing the games at offer in the LIVE, I can't say how much better their offer is, but PSN have some great titles too.
As for calling Team Meat crybabies, and saying other developers also don't like them, that is easily the most spiteful and reprehensible thing I've ever seen a game developer say about another developer. It smacks of a desperate need for attention, an unhealthy level of competitiveness, and among other things, no standards for one's own behavior.
If these guys think it's OK to publicly say something that dumb, mean, and lame, I wonder what kind of games they'll make? Personally, I am not optimistic.
As for PSN being a failure? I wouldn't say that, they have a big range of good games and regardless of how 'strict' MS are, I thought the whole idea of games design was shipping out a product that gives your customers the best value possible, not working to appease the almighty Microsoft gods or whatever nonsense is being spat out from him.
Either way, I don't think we'll be seeing 'Brand' coming to PSN any time soon ;)
We have yet to launch a game because We have been too busy scratching the Royal Ass and playing Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection. We are not amused.
Both has its share of great games. The standouts being Wipeout for the PSN and Treasure's classic games like Ikaruga on XBLA
@Alex Celeski wow, if you are a fan than you really need to keep up with them. Not only did they JUST release a new game (lol struggling to stay relevant) but they have said they have a large plan for celebrating the 1year aniversary of Super Meat Boy.
Either way his game looks like complete crap, why isn't it on PSN if they have such low standards?
Was there a good reason to make me aware of this man? I mean, beyond the fact that he's being a little obnoxious? Is there a game he's working on or something topical he's doing that relates to his statements? He's expressing an opinion on something that's been getting a lot of attention recently (Sony's development relationships), but there's nothing he said that's really thought provoking or interesting. I honestly can't tell if you're giving this guy a soapbox, using him as a proxy for your own, or if you're just trying to capture a little more of this ongoing thing with Sony for late-comers.
Help me here, Jim, please. I really do mean it; I'm not being sarcastic or facetious. I want to know why this man's opinion is poignant enough to warrant your attention, and perforce mine as a reader here. Is it really just the novelty of no PR standing between his opinion and the world? Is it about what he can say as opposed to what he actually said? Because that would be interesting.
Seriously though, game developers should not be attacking eachother like politicians. Choose your side, make games, and enjoy the best of both worlds.
PSN: Inferior but free
Do we not understand this yet?
Nine Dots Studios, I would like to see you try to make a game for PSN and XBL. Then come back and tell us this.
Mr. Boucher-Vidal, you've gotten the PR you want. Now show us what you've got.
