Deus Ex turns ten, goes on sale for Steam photo

Unbeknownst to me until literally five seconds ago, today marks Deux Ex's tenth birthday.

While I feel like the game hasn't aged nearly as well as some would have you believe -- I can't blame them for fighting the good fight -- it's still totally worth the $2.49 Steam is currently charging for it.

Throw in another $2.49, and you can get Deus Ex: Invisible War, too. Although, that offer doesn't come with my endorsement. With Human Revolution on the way, and actually sounding quite good from what my peers tell me, this is the ideal time to jump in bed with JC Denton. Do it!

[Thanks, Mikey]

Sadly, I have never played the Deus Ex series.
Now may be a good time. FALCON BUY!

I played through Deus Ex again twoish years ago, and there are a ton of great gameplay and graphics mods that make it surprisingly fun to this day.

Playing through Deus Ex used to be a thing I'd do about every other year. Never really got old for me, but nostalgia and rose-tinted glasses and all that jazz.

Still, all you whipper-snappers need to snap this deal up.

Rose-tinted glasses nothing. I first played through Deus Ex like 2 years ago, and I still think it's one of the best games ever made. Anybody who DOESN'T pick this up for $2.50 is missing out on what may be the best game deal since the Orange Box

God I loved that experience back in the day. I played halfway through it a couple years ago because it runs great on my old Acer laptop.

As one of the handful games that deserves to have the words Role Playing Game uttered anywhere near it Deus Ex is pretty much the best game ever made. Not just ten years ago, but now, and in one hundred it will still be revered as a work of excellence. All the fags crying about their Citizen Kane don't realise that it already exists.

I can understand that a lot of people will not have bothered playing it though, there are a fuckton of Final Fantasy games to get through in you precious time afterall.

SlickZero got it completely right. I played through it again last year and it was still as amazing as I remembered it being 10 years ago. I found it pretty hard to believe when in an earlier thread people were saying it aged poorly. But it for 3 bucks, play through the Statue of Liberty level, and see if the game hasn't swept you off your feet by then.

completing deus ex about 4 times over in the last month has just confirmed in my eyes that it is categorically the best game ever made. graphics age (in fact they were average even in 2000) but gameplay, depth, atmosphere, rich dialogue and characters (you know the important things) are as brilliant as 10 years ago, in fact more so in an industry filled to the eye balls with linear space marine cover shooters and painfully cliched souless characters. a classic can only age badly if its formula has gone on to be copied and evolved over the years. deus ex hasnt aged at all because 10 years on, there are no games that even tried to emulate its depth

I picked this up on Steam about two years ago and played through the first few levels. I have to admit, it didn't really grab me, which I think is partially to do with the fact that I didn't have a mouse and the game is fucking difficult to control with just my laptop's touch pad. However, anyone would indeed be a fool not to pick this up for two and a half measly dollars.

Actually, knowing that it's the tenth anniversary sort of inspires me to go back and give it another try...

Invisible War gets my stamp of approval. Don't know why haters gonna hate on a great game. $2.50 is a steal and the graphics don't look as terrible as the first, it employs Havok physics and was originally for the Xbox.

Still one of the best games ever made. I see it as coming up as a close second to System Shock 2.

I was fortunate enough to be let in to see Deus Ex 3. I was pretty excited. It looks like they're avoiding all the mistakes that were made in Deus Ex 2 and going back to the roots of the first's social gameplay and branching storylines, and then mixing up the combat with some mechanics that have been introduced in the last 10 years. Basically it was the best game of E3, to me. I cannot fucking wait.

I played Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Planescape: Torment all in the course of a year or so in high school.

No game I've played since has lived up to any one of them, and the best games have been the ones that most reminded me of them.

@ somanycats

The beginning of Deus Ex was pretty bad...it was only until you got to Hell's Kitchen that things started to pick up.

While Deus Ex was great, it is far from perfect. The characters are not very good compared to other RPGs released around that time, such as Baldur's Gate II. They lacked emotion, except for Gunther, and only existed to move the plot. The pacing was pretty poor too. The game was too long. The game's finale ended in a whimper as well.

For the sequel, it is a lesser game overall, however, it is superior to the original in several areas. Graphics..duh. The story and the characters were actually better in IW. They are mre developed, more dynamic, and have the human element the first game lacked. klara Sparks is a major example. Its paced better as well, with a average but exciting ending. The story itself as a more human element than the original, its less focused on conspiracy and more focused on its sociopolitical themes. However, by streamlining the gameplay, it exposed the flaws of the series. The first game could hide behind RPG mechanics. IW can't.

@Monodi: I changed the controls around to better fit what I usually do for other FPSes. E to use, R to reload, X/Ctrl to crouch, Shift to run, Q for Quests/Notes (and aug access), I for inventory...yeah. The controls will throw you off at first, but at least they're easy to adjust to what you like.

Also, for everyone: Get this. The Nameless Mod is, as you guessed, a mod for Deus Ex. It has its own story and characters separate from Deus Ex, though the mod needs it to run, and the story is based on a forum for said game (it makes sense in context). Oh, and it's free too. I highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the game.

@Atheist Jew - The problems for DX2 was that weapons and biomods were too streamlined and that there was much less exploration and flexibility in how you solved a scenario.

As far as story branching goes, it was incredibly consistent with DX, complete with all the expected gray areas, multiple choices to make and the ability to turn once side against the other were all there.

Well, as one of those Final Fantasy junkies and a slave to sales, let's see if I can handle first-person combat (in the little I've looked up about this game, it doesn't seem designated as a shooter, unlike the May Payne games I still haven't really played since picking them up on sale). Heck, could it be a "branch title" into Half-Life [2]?

...prolly not, but meh. I can at the least allow my sister's boyfriend to try it out, if he wants.

@Danny Merritt - Now have that mod bookmarked (along with this article/post), so maybe after I've buggered through a couple Portal mods.

The choice and consquence and the branching storylines were actually done better in Invisble War than in the first game.

Especially regarding the trainees.

Bought this during the Christmas sale, attempted and failed to get through the tutorial a couple months back. I figured I was doing it wrong, and decided I'd try again eventually.

It was actually suit's Reddit post a few days back that convinced me to give it another go. I spent several hours yesterday doing all that fancy stuff, and hopefully everything'll be all set.

Also, I really want System Shock 2 to hit Steam. Really badly.

Question for all the Deus Ex lovers: How does the PS2 version compare to the PC version? I have never played either, but I have a PS2 copy around here somewhere. Should I just play it or should I get the PC version?

Also, same question for the XBox version of IW.
