Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect novel set for 2011 release photo

Square Enix and Del Rey Boks have announced that it will publish Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect in 2011.

The book will be based on and in the world of the upcoming title, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The Icarus Effect will follow Secret Service agent Anna Kelso and special-ops soldier Ben Saxon as they unravel conspiracies in the game's cyberpunk totalitarian society.

The book's author, the British writer James Swallow, has previously worked on novels based in the Stargate, Star Trek, and Warhammer 40,000 universes. Swallow is also credited for having a hand in authoring Guerilla's Killzone 2.

It seems that every high-profile game these days has a novel (or comic book) attached to it. I've never actually cracked open a novel based on a videogame property, despite having one based on the Gears of War universe lying around my house. (I also bought a novelization of Defender, only because, uh, seriously?) Anyone actively seek out these extracurricular game novels, and do you have any recommendations?

I'll certainly read it. Because I'm a whore for Deus Ex.

The Halo books are pretty great with the exception of the flood. Fall of reach and ghost of onyx are the best though.

He's not my favorite Warhammer 40K author, but I still enjoy his books when I read them. That and it's Deus Ex, so I'd like to give it a go.

The Mass Effect books are the two of them from the same author, Revelation is short and not that good (is not bad either).
Ascension is a little bit better.
Anyway you need to play mass effect before those books, I think that they suffer from simplification of the science fiction behind them. From some reason they dont want to go into the technology or the society more than the game probably because the game is a work in progress.

Human Revolution is looking hot, and cyberpunk is right up my alley - I might have to track this one down.

Would you like some novel to go with your allegorical allusion?

Q: Is it Deus Ex?
A: Yes.

Then, yes, I will buy it.

James Swallow is also helping to write the game and is an excellent author.

The only thing I really know him from is from the Doctor Who audio adventures from Big Finish, where he did the two Cybermen stories Kingdom of Silver and the series Cyberman 2 - both of which were excellent.

Man, I love those big finish audios--especially the 5th and 6th doctor stories (at least in comparison to the TV series during that period). I am officially interested.
