in case any mac fans take issue with my feelings, a brief glance at the UK mac store shows the default mac pro coming in at £2,041. what do you get for this princely sum?
last generation CPU on an EOL socket. (2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor)
small amount of crappy RAM in an obsolete, awkward configuration. (3GB (three 1GB) memory)
last generation mid range GPU, which is soon to be 2 generations old. you could add a second one, but apple want £203 for it, which is approximately 3 times what it sels for at retail, that is if you can even find anyone still selling such an outdated product. (ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB GDDR5)
why anyone bothers is beyond me.
Holy crap, I didn't know that Steve Jobs was in the new Deus Ex!
...
Yeah, I feel really bad I made that joke too...
Nothing is wrong with the hardware - it's just that no one outside of Valve really wants to commit to developing for OSX at this stage.
Now if Google would get off its ass and give us an Android OS, that would be fucking awesome.
And how much does that cost? There's no denying that a good mac is waaaay more expensive than a good PC.
I, personally, enjoy OSX much more than Windows. Though I own a PC and Mac, I prefer the Mac for everyday use.
I understand what you guys are saying though, this iMac cost me about $1799. I am satisfied with it, even at that price. But Apple is nuts. They make their products shiny, and expect the price to be "fair" at under $2000. But at least they are backing it up with good hardware now.
you're right to say that imac is capable of gaming, nobody can fault that, but in 6 months it's going to be feeling a little slower. in a year it's going to be obsolete, and the only thing you'll be able to do is buy another one.
what you've got in there is a mobile/laptop GPU. it's what allows it to fit into a small space, but it's also what prevents it from being upgraded when it inevitably falls behind the times.
