Deus Ex and that other game on sale now via Steam photo

We didn't want to start this post with another "if," so we didn't. But if you've ever entertained the idea of re-purchasing the original Deus Ex and that other game in the series, now seems like a great time do so. The Steam sales gurus have set up a "Midweek Madness" sale that bundled the first two Eidos-developed FPSes for a ridiculously low-price: $5.00. For the next couple of days too, you can also grab each at $2.50. We should note alongside this that the version of Deus Ex in the sale is the Game of the Year Edition.

While we doubt you'll find the time to jump back into the Deus Ex universe, we understand why you might bite on this one. The new Deus Ex does indeed look wicked rad, and a little understanding of the series won't hurt the experience.

[Thanks, Darren!]

Oh god, the first Deus Ex was so good... Must resist...

I made an announcement to Steamtoid about this. Above all else, $2.50 for the first Deus Ex is beyond a steal. Given the number of mods out there (like The Nameless Mod) and the sheer number of ways you can do things in that game, you'd be crazy (or not a fan of FPS/RPG games) to miss out.

And it runs on damn near anything these days. Even my weak little laptop!

The first Deus Ex was a masterpiece, but I'll be honest. I loved Deus Ex Invisible War. The story wasn't quite at the expected standard, but the playability was great. It still is one of the only FPS's that did the whole 'play the way you want' thing correctly : you could be a sniper, and assaulter, or a melee guy and still enjoy the game.

anyways, discuss.

SPOILER

It was only until just recently that I was informed that you didn't *have* to go out the apartment window. That alone makes this worth a buy for me.

Actually, it was when Paul turned up in IW. I was all 'wut-teh-fux, mang.'

@bluemeep: I actually died during that sequence and I seemed to be able to continue...somehow. I think. I'm still slowly working my way back through the game.

I've had them sitting in my cart since yesterday but I haven't pulled the trigger.

I still have the PC version for the second game... and it probably still won't run on my computer! :(
In fact I think that when I go to PAX this year I'm going to bring a bunch of those old games and stuff along with my Dreamcast stuff to give it away and get it to someone that actually wants it.
Hmmm... gonna have to think of some contest to win old shit... from an old... uh.. yeah, gonna have to think of another contest name.

Invisible War was a decent game, it just wasn't a decent Deus Ex game. Don't let everyones harsh criticism put you off buying it. Seriously, both games are well worth the $2.50 price tag.

Why all the invisible war hate? I thought both were great games.... great pickup for that price if you've never played em

Back when I played Invisible War, I loved shoving any NPC's who huddled together around those barrels that had fires burning in them. One would catch fire, immediately start running around screaming bloody fucking murder, and proceed to light the rest up like a year old christmas tree. Ah, the memories...

Along with what Doomsday Forte said, there are some pretty stellar Deus Ex graphic-enhancement
mods to go along with the gameplay ones.

I'd link to some, but I'm on on my phone an it'd be too much work :)

Bought it to play "one day or probably never" and since I never bought it back in the day. Take that piracy!

I think Invisible War had the better story...the message was more relevant.

The gameplay of the first was better however.

Buying both I was surprised at how much closer to "Future Proof" the first game was versus the second.

Without making manual changes to the settings files, or using anything other than the in game options menu I was able to go all the way up to 1680x1050 resolution, and did not experience any awkward FOV issues. Furthermore with just a few quick downloads I had the option to scale down the UI and swap out the renderer for a more modern version (newer openGL, DX9 or DX10) In total it took about 10 minutes to get everything perfect, with another 10-15 to configure various enhancement mods to work with the steam version.

DX2 on the otherhand required editing two different settings files, putting them both on read-only, and then hex-editing an engine file to get to 1680x1050 without FOV issues. In addition to that, to actually use anti-aliasing under that setup I had to force it on through my drivers, and to get the UI scaled correctly I had to go and make even more edits to the settings files, most of which was guesswork. This whole experience took about an hour and a half due to slow loading times (Why does it take the same amount of time to load the main menu as the first level?) and just the imprecise nature of it all.

There is no excuse not to buy Deus Ex 1 right now. That includes already owning it.

Every time a game goes on sale for <$5.00 I have to buy it. I play only about 1/10 of the Steam games I buy...
