You may have heard that retailer Best Buy is stepping up their game (pun!?) in their stores for games sales. We've heard for some time now that they're working on focusing that game area into a store-within-a-store, sort of like a GameStop inside a Best Buy location. DualShockers has some shots of the program's launch guide, and they give us some idea of what the retailer is going for with this new program.
Best Buy Gaming will be a new area in the stores that will employ a gaming specialist or two to talk to you, the customer, about videogames. DualShockers says that they're even hiring gaming supervisors to oversee these areas. I wonder how specialized these specialists and supervisors have to be.
There's word that they will now be jumping into the used hardware business. There will be more incentive and higher trade-in values than GameStop for your used hardware. For your trade you can get either cash back or the option of an additional 20% kick back if you decide to take a Best Buy gift card instead.
I've used the new-ish trade-in games program and it works well. I recently traded in enough games to pay for most of a new television! That alone spending flexibility alone puts Best Buy's game program over GameStop for me. If they become even more focused they could kill off the competition.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I asked a Best Buy clerk about the same game, he said "Well, IGN gave it a 2 so it sucked. I didt play it because IGN said it sucked."
Please, don't let their "gaming specalists" be a guy who only reads IGN.
Can't wait to see how wonderful their gaming specialists are.
So it's a store within a store who is in another store with in a store
that's really fucking deep
So, it's like Nintendo's phone support in person, huh?
Its not much better at gamestop, try asking someone about lost in shadow for the wii, 9 times out of 10, the guy scratches his head and asks you to preorder madden or call of duty...
Any cabling that I would need, from CAT-5 to HDMI, are $5 on Amazon, and $50+ at Best Buy - this is usually the case for every other electronic product. Ever since the advent of online shopping, "Best" Buy's moniker hasn't been that exciting - even Costco has consistently better deals on TVs.
At this point, Best Buy needs to take advantage of stupid consumers to survive, which they have been doing with things like $200 "gold plated" HDMI cables that you "need" (I've seen this upsale in person), and "$50 PS3 'installs'" to update your firmware (which is done automatically).
Oh please.
INCEPTION!!!!
I've actually visited my Best Buy on many occasions to discuss about these positions. I feel it's just going to be another "We're hiring people who know how to 'sell' games." Notice how I said sell and not know?
You utilize the wrong outlets, my friend.
At one point, I got $55 for my copy of Mass Effect 2, as a trade-in. With an extra 40%, plus my Edge Card 10%, and an extra promotion, I basically got more than I would have on Ebay, without the hassle of shipping costs, and with an opened item.
I only use Gamestop if I'm making a profit, in terms of what I can sell it on Ebay for. If you're looking to trade in Madden 2005, you're going to have issues. If you look for deals, they will be there.
