Details on Best Buy's store-within-a-store gaming dept photo

You may have heard that retailer Best Buy is stepping up their game (pun!?) in their stores for games sales. We've heard for some time now that they're working on focusing that game area into a store-within-a-store, sort of like a GameStop inside a Best Buy location. DualShockers has some shots of the program's launch guide, and they give us some idea of what the retailer is going for with this new program.

Best Buy Gaming will be a new area in the stores that will employ a gaming specialist or two to talk to you, the customer, about videogames. DualShockers says that they're even hiring gaming supervisors to oversee these areas. I wonder how specialized these specialists and supervisors have to be.

There's word that they will now be jumping into the used hardware business. There will be more incentive and higher trade-in values than GameStop for your used hardware. For your trade you can get either cash back or the option of an additional 20% kick back if you decide to take a Best Buy gift card instead.

I've used the new-ish trade-in games program and it works well. I recently traded in enough games to pay for most of a new television! That alone spending flexibility alone puts Best Buy's game program over GameStop for me. If they become even more focused they could kill off the competition.

I'll stick with gamestop for the time being. Honestly most of their trade values are pretty fair amd if you time it right with the specials you can make quite allot.

I asked a Gamestop clerk about his thoughts on Deadly Premonition. He said it's freaky odd in a good way, and its worth the purchase new.

I asked a Best Buy clerk about the same game, he said "Well, IGN gave it a 2 so it sucked. I didt play it because IGN said it sucked."

Please, don't let their "gaming specalists" be a guy who only reads IGN.

They are also actively trying to steal GameStop people.

Years ago when shopping for some extra RAM, I had a conversation with a Best Buy 'computer tech' and was told with a straight face that "you can't upgrade that, you have to buy a whole new computer."

Can't wait to see how wonderful their gaming specialists are.

I think anyone who reads Destructoid typically knows just as much if not more than any employee. I prefer Amazon Prime.

If this works out, they could be the best buy(er) of your used stuff. Like others, I question the big box "expertise" but getting some enthusiasts in there would be a great start

So, it's like Nintendo's phone support in person, huh?

Had a terrible expirence at best buy. Asked why SD cards had diffrent classes and his response was "get the cheaper one, its better" stood there with my phone to look it up because I still had no idea o_O
Its not much better at gamestop, try asking someone about lost in shadow for the wii, 9 times out of 10, the guy scratches his head and asks you to preorder madden or call of duty...

I like how they spin the %20 thing. It's not that you get %20 more of Best Buy credit, it's that you get %20 less in cash if you choose not to go with the credit. C'mon people, think!

I haven't bought anything substantial from Best Buy in like, 10 years.

Any cabling that I would need, from CAT-5 to HDMI, are $5 on Amazon, and $50+ at Best Buy - this is usually the case for every other electronic product. Ever since the advent of online shopping, "Best" Buy's moniker hasn't been that exciting - even Costco has consistently better deals on TVs.

At this point, Best Buy needs to take advantage of stupid consumers to survive, which they have been doing with things like $200 "gold plated" HDMI cables that you "need" (I've seen this upsale in person), and "$50 PS3 'installs'" to update your firmware (which is done automatically).

I'm sure for an extra $10, Best Buy will "install the latest patch on the preowned game you want" too.

INCEPTION!!!!

I've actually visited my Best Buy on many occasions to discuss about these positions. I feel it's just going to be another "We're hiring people who know how to 'sell' games." Notice how I said sell and not know?

My local BB already has this setup and I actually like it. The clerk that helped me was pretty cool and I ended up chatting about their trade-in program with him for about 30 minutes. If I can just waltz in to BB and get more than GS is giving me, word.

I've never understood why people use gamestops trade in program it's been garbage from what i've noticed in terms of how much they actually give you and try to cover it up with: "WEZ GOTS THE DEALS MAN" get a whole extra 40% for your already $4.00 game...

It's admittedly a commendable effort on their part, but I doubt it's going to make me hate shopping at Best Buy any less. What can they accomplish, deploying their fledgling idea to go toe-to-toe with Gamestop and... well, I guess pretty much everything is a Gamestop now.

You utilize the wrong outlets, my friend.

At one point, I got $55 for my copy of Mass Effect 2, as a trade-in. With an extra 40%, plus my Edge Card 10%, and an extra promotion, I basically got more than I would have on Ebay, without the hassle of shipping costs, and with an opened item.

I only use Gamestop if I'm making a profit, in terms of what I can sell it on Ebay for. If you're looking to trade in Madden 2005, you're going to have issues. If you look for deals, they will be there.

I just sell my used games on eBay, I always wind up making more than anyone gives in trade. Fuck gamestop. "are you sure you don't want to preorder anything?" I fucking said no the first time didn't I?

As a former employee of Best Buy your gaming expertise will have nothing to do with how well you succeed as a gaming supervisor. How many shitty service plans, crappy third party accessories and magazine subscriptions you sell will though.

Interesting, I would love to see an alternative to GameStop. Tired of getting bad deals for trade-ins (Brought in Bulletstorm, told I would only get $5.40 back on it, you can probably guess that I didn't sell it).

The whole thing about trading in and turning around to use it with a gift card is still a sucker bet. You're forgetting about tax on your TV or any other purchase. I'd rather sell through Glyde and buy through Amazon tax-free. Bought the same model 32" HDTV BB had for $50 less AND avoided the extra $50 tax. For those of you keeping track, that's $100.

The page in the pic looks like some propaganda poster from a Fallout game. Good on them for pushing used stuff though, regardless of how shite it will come across

Yes! I can trade in 3 of my games then that'll cover the cost it takes them to, "expertly," set up one of my new systems. Then I'll trade in some of my other stuff so I can also get the black tie protection plan.
