Destructoid survives Spike Video Game Awards, brings you results and notes photo

Last night, Spike TV filled the Mandalay Bay events center with various videogame industry types, girls excited to see celebrities, and other people instructed to scream on command. The show is set to air on Spike TV on Sunday, December 9 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT), but we were there (we smelled Samuel L. Jackson!), and we figured you'd want a little preview. (Spoiler alert!)

The big winner of the evening was 2K Boston/2K Australia and their game BioShock (which you may have heard of). The title took three awards, including "Best Xbox 360 Game," "Best Original Score," and the coveted "Game of the Year." Boston-based videogaming rock stars Harmonix also scored big, picking up the "Studio of the Year" award, and their game Rock Band picked up "Best Soundtrack" and "Best Rhythm Game."

After the jump, you'll find a full list of the winners, as well as some key highlights from the show. As a reminder, if you're not happy with the winners, don't bitch at Spike -- these selections were made by a committee of esteemed members of the videogame industry media ... and us.

A list of random show notes, which is only a sampling of what you may (or may not) see tomorrow night when the show airs:

* The elaborate stage was a mock arcade cabinet, joysticks and all. And a lot of loud, scary pyro, just like you remember arcades were like back in the mid 80s.

* Donkey Kong phenom Steve Wiebe was backstage attempting to get to the game's "kill screen" before the end of the ceremony. He wasn't able to in the time allotted.

* Gamecock invaded the show floor, including their trademark rooster outfits and full-body Hail to the Chimp character outfits. The 'Cock stormed the stage after the "Game of the Year" announcement, taking the microphone and proclaiming that "Gamecock is for the children!" As a result, BioShock designer Ken Levine lost a chance to give an acceptance speech, and was awkwardly ushered off the stage.

* Kid Rock (adorned in fur, as you'd expect) performed his new single, "So Hott," which has the not-safe-for-television chorus: "So hott/I don't wanna be your friend/I wanna f**k you like I'm never gonna see you again." The single has a Southern Rock feel, derivative of Foghat's "Slow Ride," which Kid Rock and his band played a portion of in the middle of their short set.

* The Foo Fighters performed two songs that evening -- "The Pretender" and "Learn to Fly." The band burst into the latter following Harmonix's "Studio of the Year" win, cutting off an introduction by Rock Band peripheral guru Daniel Sussman.

* Harmonix's Helen McWilliams may have had a bit to drink, in true metal form. While accepting an award, she threw up the devil horns, confirmed that Slayer does indeed rule, and applauded Guitar Hero III for having a killer soundtrack (although Activision's game didn't take home the "Best Soundtrack" honors).

* Speaking of Activision, all of their games received a huge pop from the audience, who burst into applause at the very mention of any of their nominated titles ... even though only one of their games (Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4) took home an award.

* As a presenter, Don King was given the opportunity to unveil the name (and nothing more) of 2K's new boxing title, Prize Fighters.

* The award intro videos were clever and entertaining, and worth watching the show just to see. Be warned: they play on gamer stereotypes and tend to lean towards Spike's late-teen to early-30s demographic. But seeing as how you're reading Destructoid and the word "fart" might still make you giggle, we're sure this won't be a problem.

* Tila Tequila is short like Toad, and her skull is the shape of Pac-Man, which we can assume is why she was asked to appear as a presenter. At one point during the show, Tequila tries to pick between one of three consoles -- the Wii, the PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360, which were placed upon pedestals on stage. She can't decide, and she comes to the conclusion that she's "bi-gameual." Groans were audible throughout the arena.

* During the taping of the ceremony, Spike aired commercials for upcoming programming, including a trailer for what looks to be the most amazing film ever made. The film in question is Edison Force, which stars Morgan Freeman, L.L. Cool J, and Justin Timberlake. No, we're not kidding.

* This year's awards will mark the first television appearance of Video Games Live, who put on an awesome performance, as usual. They provided music for much of the evening, but their actual performance (which includes playing videogame music along with on-screen accompaniment) was disappointingly short.

* The Mandalay Bay sells some of the most bland hoagies you'll ever have the "pleasure" of eating. Please stay away from them if you can.

* The stadium seating was littered with foam "Spike Video Game Awards" hands; Niero snagged a bunch, and we'll be giving them away on the site in the coming weeks.

A number of trailers will also be premiered tomorrow. A quick (and possibly incomplete) run down of what we saw:

* Rainbow Six: Vegas 2: Showed very little game footage, much of it consisting of live action Las Vegas tom-foolery.

* Prototype: Radical Entertainment's game looks pretty killer, and reminded me a lot of their semi-open world 2005 title, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.

* Gran Turismo 5 Prologue: Looked so good, it's unlikely that it was being rendered in real time. I look forward to being proven wrong.

* Afro Samurai: I'm pretty sure this game was announced over two years ago, so it's disappointing that the new trailer shows no actual gameplay footage. The trailer did have some pretty bloody CG hands and a sword, so I guess we're inching towards seeing something that resembles a game.

* TNA iMPACT!: For some reason, this was being hailed as the world premiere of Midway's Unreal Engine 3-powered wrestling title, but we know that's not true. It did, however, show some new gameplay footage. Not surprisingly, that footage was of dudes wrestling.

* Borderlands: The game looks pretty, and it shows promise of having a rich science fiction plot. Unfortunately, the trailer had a big build up, but didn't really deliver anything in the way of "the goods."

* Little Big Planet: The new trailer didn't appear to show off any new gameplay elements, but it continues to look like an amazingly fun and unique experience.

Oh, I guess you want to know who won what, right?

Oops... didn't finish that. Anyhow, While the awards were much deserved... I have a few of my own:

Ron Workman wins the "Dressed like a cast member on The Apprentice" award.

Steve-O wins for "Getting kicked out of the show for being a loser" award

Video Games Live wins the "Awesome" award. No explaination needed

Tila wins for the "Why am I onstage right now?" award.

Kid Rock wins for the "Impressing a cynic" award

Foo Fighters win for the "Band who kicked the most ass" award

The Trophy girls win for the "@*!(#&$ #@&! That's F*ing HOT! award"

The security gaurds win for "Yes I understand english you idiot, I'm trying to take a picture of my boyfriend on the red carpet standing next to Samuel L. Jackson so back off and stop asking for my damn credentials." award. (I'm not bitter... not at all!)

Samuel L. Jackson wins for the "OBVIOUSLY most Mother F*ing kick ass person in the room" award

Stan Lee wins for the "Improv because my telepromter went out" award.

Mike Voghl wins for the "Hottest presenter" award (blalalalalalala I am GOING to see Cloverfield now!)

Cris Angel wins for the "Most flirtatious" award. Yeah.... he wants me. :p

Overall, this awards show was full of much more win than last year! I'm excited to see how the end result comes out tomorrow. I know I had a killer time!!

Tila Tequila. I have such mixed feelings. Body, boobs, Asian... on the other hand, MySpace, gnarliness, her skull... Such confusion.

I'm surprisingly satisfied with these (admittedly meaningless) results. I was expecting Halo 3 to win everything. BioShock, COD4, Portal, and Mass Effect all got props. I'm a happy pig. I won't be watching, however.

Great write-up guys!

I was disappointed with the Gamecock guys storming the stage. It showed a lack of taste and complete disrespect for BioShock and the team. Were the BioShock folks upset? Well, I was speaking to one of the producers after the show and they said... "If I @#*$%@ing see those Gamecock @$$holes I'm gonna beat the living $hit out of them!"

Good times! :)

Other notes...

They totally cut Steve-O out of the show after the rehearsal. He never even made it to the taping. I'm not sure if he was drunk, high (or both)... or if he's really like that all the time... but he was being extremely obnoxious and refused to stick remotely close to the written script and then started spouting uncomfortable racial and political remarks. Not sure what happened by the scenes... but he never made it to the taping.

I had a great conversation with Stan Lee backstage and I think he got one of the biggest applause of the evening when he came out. That was great to see! I was telling him about my custom Spider-Man Les Paul (the Webslinger One)
http://www.gibson.com/whatsnew/pressrelease/1999/img/spiderl.jpg that I was going to be playing on stage for some of the performances. (I switched back and forth between the Les Paul and my Steinberger with PONG art http://www.48chicagoblues.com/Steinberger%20Folder/Steinbereger%20details.htm
depending on whether or not I needed my Whammy bar. No Whammy on the Gibson.)

I said hi to Don King and asked him if he remembered doing a TV interview with me about 7 years ago. He said "of course!" but I doubt he did... Here's the unedited interview, it's pretty funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xr35x8dWbzM

As the Destructoid guys mentioned... the Tila segment was a bit weird and uncomfortable... here's hoping they cut most of that bit out of the show. :)

Cris Angel was cool and Samuel L. Jackson is a really nice and approachable guy.

As far as our performance...

We wanted to play as much as possible! Unfortunately they only gave us 2 minutes for the Classic Arcade Medley (which is normally 7 minutes long!) I hacked it to 2 1/2 minutes and they accepted.

We took the show to and from commercial throughout the night (8 times)... and the 8 songs were from Mario, Zelda, Warcraft, Sonic, Elevator Action, Duck Hunt/Punch-Out, Rastan & Out Run. Not sure how much of it will actually air.

And the final segment we did was the Game of the Year nominees where we played 30 seconds of music from each of the nominees (Orange Box, Mass Effect, BioShock & Halo 3). Again... not sure how much of our performance will actually be shown because I'm sure they'll be showing full screen of all the footage we were playing to.

All in all I thought it was a pretty good show considering the format. It's the MTV Awards for games. You can't really compare it to the serious Academy Awards. Our industry has the Game Developers Choice Awards for that. Harcore gamers may scoff.. but if you go into it realizing what it is and take it lightly, you'll probably end up enjoying it and will consider it cool that a major television network and major sponsors are interested in airing video game programming. It just helps to show how mainstream games are becoming... and I think that is a good thing for everyone.

Thanks,

Tommy

If theres any truth to 2k Sports now owning the Fight Night brand, That new game should be FN: Round 4 basically, which will be pretty cool. They need to get Floyd Mayweather's image rights though, cos he'd be a popular sparring (Read: Punching Bag) partner.

Oh yeah? Well, considering that there were three consoles in front of her, and she didn’t pick two of them, she would technically be tri-gam—oh, fuck this, my head hurts from how dumb she is.

I’d love to at least catch the pre-show, if only to see Colette on TV, but (A) I have a 7-to-9-page paper due Monday, that I haven’t really started researching, and (B) I don’t think my college cable lineup includes Spike. Even if it did, I don’t get cable in my room, and I don’t think this is worth the time or effort to go mooch off of someone else’s cable.

Now I have no reason to watch it. Not that I had any reason to watch it in the first place.

By the way, how the hell can Bioshock win GOTY and best 360 game but not best PC since The Orange Box won that and since The Orange Box was the best PC game why wasn't it the GOTY or best 360. I'm confused.

I want the Destructoid video game awards.

Did we forget about all of the games that came out before, say ... September/October? None of the games on this list were released more than a couple months ago. Where there no good games in January?

I haven't looked at what was released earlier in the year, so it might've all been garbage, but ...

It's going to be a while before I can actually take this award show seriously. Right now, it's still attempting to fit in with the gamer crowd and a cheap corporate ploy to attract a demographic. Also, it doesn't seem like they put very much thought into the awards.

Tommy: Wish they would've given you guys more time, especially with it being "the world premier of Video Games Live on TV" and all, but what we got was great. Loved the confusion during Patton Oswalt's bit when you guys were asked to riff. :]
