Destructoid's gamescom 2010 Game of the Show photo

We are almost always required to provide a "Game of the Show" at the end of any major gaming exposition. gamescom 2010 is no different, and I was utterly spoiled for choice this year with big title after big title thrown in my path; not surprising, considering that gamescom is the biggest event of its type in the world. (Yes, that does mean it is bigger than E3.) Picking gamecom's best of is definitely not an easy task, and naturally opens it up to a world of trolling and no holds barred Internet rage.

Gamescom showed us plenty of triple A titles that could easily take "Game of the Show." We saw balls-to-the-wall action in Bulletstorm; got in-depth high fantasy role playing game Dragon Age II; Ezio and his band of assassins in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood; the MMO for people who don't like MMOs known as Guild Wars 2; and the letting go of dignity and self-reservation with Microsoft Kinect and PlayStation Move, to name only a few.

One game stood above all of these to take the title of Destructoid's "Game of the Show," and that was Namco Bandai's Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.

This was my first encounter with Enslaved, and I spent the entire presentation grinning like an idiot on the edge of my chair, shooting looks of child-like excitement back and forth between my camera man and my blogger. One of the most attractive elements to Enslaved is that fact that it's something new. I have played and seen so many amazing games while at gamescom, but so many were follow-ups to already existing games. Enslaved was something refreshing.

It's a game that delivers on so many levels. Visually it appeared stunning, with gorgeous detail. The characters moved and interacted to such a fine degree, with amazing motion-capture and voice acting to boot. (Not surprising since the writing is by none other than Alex Garland.) The combat was varied and contained everything from third-person shooting to free-running, puzzles, close-quarter combat, and even a good old chase scene. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that the main female character, whom you are supposed to protect, is not some batshit insane bullet sponge with a death wish.

I am a little worried that the game won't deliver play-time wise, but other members of the staff are already reciprocating the way I feel. Fingers crossed that Enslaved lives up to its hype, because I damn well want it to.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is due out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 5, 2010 for North America and October 8 for all other regions.

The "guy with contrasting personality working with girl" has gotten far to cliche in games for me to take this game seriously.

Can we please see some other types of meaningful character chemistry in games of this sort?

I'm not too sure of this game yet, but I really love how colorful it is.

You do not mention Vanquish in this article. BOO!

Regardless, I'm interested in Enslaved as well. I'll get it as soon as it'll get to a price of around 20 bucks.

Glad to see Destructoid shares the same good taste in games as I do, haha. Nah but seriously, cool to see Enslaved getting the coverage and praise it (appears to anyway) deserves. I really hope Ninja Theory can get it perfect with Enslaved and if nothing else, I'm buying it as soon as it's available if just for the artstyle and environments.

I'm really looking towards playing this game and Vanquish. I hope it lives up to the hype because I jumped in the bandwagon pretty early when I heard that Ninja Theory were decent writers...will probably day-one this game. I dig love/hate relationships/romance in games, so, add good writing with memorable characters to that and it's a winning formula to me.

Dtoid seems to be placing bets all over the place with this one, hopefully it won't let you guys down.

Vanquish looks great too and Dan Seto made it his game of the show on the Gamescom special of BritToid.

And yes, i really hope Enslaved Doesn't let me down either!

I still might have to keep this one on the rental list for now. It looks decent in videos, but they haven't blown me away. Hopefully when I play it it will. I loved Heavenly Sword.

I also love Holly Bennett!!

I still can't seem to find my excitement for this game. I just feel like it looks really cool, but will somehow let me down in the end. For October 5th my choice will be Castlevania as it stands right now.

The trailer was a huge turn-off for me. It just looked (and sounded) like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie. I have to admit I can't recall seeing any gameplay though.

I'm very torn about it. On one hand, it looks awesome, looks like it has a really vibrant setting, and has been getting so many good mentions. On the other hand, Heavenly Sword was absolute shit. Critics loved it, and it was terrible, especially in the places they liked (presentation).

So I don't know. If I hadn't played Heavenly Sword, I'd be a lot more excited. But I'm glad to hear it's getting press, because it seems like the sort of game that sells 10,000 copies and causes the company to close. Which would suck, because Ninja Theory at least make pretty games.

@Lucas Says

Heavenly Sword was fine and the critics were true. It's not because you don't like something that everyone else thinking the opposite is wrong. It's even more likely to be the other way around.

If it's any help, everything I saw and heard about Heavenly Sword didn't make me want to unwrap my copy so far. But Enslaved surprised me with how well the combat seemed to flow between melee and ranger, and the interaction with the characters was superb. Definitely a day one game for me, but hopefully it will live up to it.

Heavenly Sword was great for 4 hours and then there was no reason to play it again. I'll give Enslaved a chance to change my mind.

Having only seen a few videos and read previews, I'm keeping my eye on this one. October could be really good for me with this and Fallout New Vegas.
