Destructoid's games of the week for 08/19/07: William Blake sucks edition! photo

Tiger, Tiger, burning bright
In the forest of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
IT DOESN'T EVEN C&^%ING RHYME!!!

Dear William Blake,

Kiss my ass.

Sincerely, Nex

Here's what the DToid staff has been playing this week:

Colette Bennett:
BioShock is my life. It's all I think about when I eat, sleep, shower, run errands and committ small crimes. If I list how many times I've played the demo here, I'd likely be humiliated. Let's just say every iota of my being waits for the offical release Tuesday.

I also played Hexic 2 and The Darkness and thought both were woefully short of Big Daddies.

Nick Chester:
BioShock. Now leave me the hell alone, I'm busy ... playing BioShock.

Dale North:
When I'm not playing the new classic called try to get the Wii to complete an update without stopping midway, I've been hitting the puzzle games with what little downtime I had this week. PS3's Piyotama is still high up on my list - when you get frustrated from losing, you can just shake the hell out of the SIXAXIS and hope that you get lucky . I've picked up Zuma (Xbox LIVE Arcade) again, though I've just recently noticed that my score is higher than anyone else's on the Dtoid staff/friends list. Consider that a challenge.

Topher Cantler:
I've been catching up on years of missed adventure games like Sam & Max Hit the Road and Day of the Tentacle. Both are every bit as great as everyone's been telling me they are. Throw in some River City Ransom, Little Nemo and Taiko no Tatsujin DS and you've got a party. Or not.

BlindsideDork:

Sleep and issues with a female of the species have kept me away but I keep trying to pull myself back to my video games somehow. I would've got BioShock but I reserved the Limited Edition one so Second Sight for GameCube is trying to fill the Big Daddy of a hole. It isn't too bad, a little fun, but I got stuck at this one part with a balcony...the doors won't open! Oh well, I still got Rebelstar on my DS.

Jim Sterling:
I download Ecco The Dolphin and had the worst experience of my life . I don't really want to talk about it anymore because it's actually painful. Painful. Outside of that, I've had nothing to really occupy me but some rubbish roms and, of course, the BioShock demo. I can't be all cool like the review team and play early copies.

Savant:
What a busy week of gaming it has been! I went on nothing short of a game-buying rampage in the past few days that makes my mouth salivate with win. I now own Halo: Combat Evolved, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Hexic 2, Madden NFL '08, and soon-to-be proud owner of BioShock next week. (Y'know, on the real release date like everybody else?)

My fiancee also has found a new game she likes as well, and it is a bit of a departure from her normal Animal Crossing and Eternal Darkness fair; The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. She's been playing it on-end since we rented it for the 360 and I didn't even think she'd want to play it when we got it. Go figure.

And for the record, folks, BioShock has "Game of the Year" written all over it. You can quote me on that, too.

Dick McVengeance:
I'm on my third runthrough of Listen to Linde talk about BioShock. It's like I've already played the game. When I'm not doing that, I'm suffering from horrible ADD and downloading every damn demo on the PSN and Japanese PSN. So, for real games, it's a bit of a crapshoot between Oblivion, Persona 3, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and 2. Goozex: Send me Thrasher: Skate and Destroy already!

David Houghton:
I've been playing an interesting new browser game. It's a text-based adventure where you have to send e-mails various games publishers and PR departments, using your interpersonal skills and time-management abilities in order to schedule various appointments for a games convention. What's really cool is that in a hark back to the adventure games of old it actually has a real-world prize for successful players. The only drawback is that they're making me go over to Leipzig to claim it...

Aaron Linde:

B is for the breathtaking environments you present, I is for your iconic enemies, O is for --

Er, right. BioShock. It's fucking awesome.

Chad Concelmo:
I threw a temper tantrum all week because I didn't get my copy of BioShock early (like some people) and refused to play anything. Unless you count standing in the corner with my arms crossed, stomping my feet, a game. In that case, well, I played that. *huff*

Faith:
I tried both the BioShock demo and the Beautiful Katamari demo on Xbox 360. I'm in love with both and plan to join in holy matrimony with them both in a private, little ceremony.

I'm still trying to finish Twilight Princess on the Wii. I'm in the Desert Prison right now. I also got Heroes of Mana on the DS which is driving me around the bend with its annoying controls. Oh, and I'm still training my brain with Brain Age on the DS. All of this is slow going cause I sprained my finger on Thursday while trying to kill a real life Mr. Mosquito. I hit a locker instead of the bug.

.tiff:

What can I say.  I've had some of the most epic gaming orgasms in the last 24 hours.  Mr. Husky Hog was gracious enough to let me kidnap him and experience the mighty wonder that is BioShock all night long.  A mere few hours later, we had a hands-on with [CONTENT DELETED] and [CONTENT DELETED] at [CONTENT DELETED].  A huge shout-out to [CONTENT DELETED] for giving us the most rockin' [CONTENT DELETED] ever!

Leigh Alexander:
I've been playing demos I haven't seen yet since I just got a 360 -- BioShock, Eternal Sonata and Beautiful Katamari, mostly. I'm out of town at my parents', so of course Pokemon and Pokemon and Pokemon.

Nex:

I spent the week getting back to my roots. My roots are mostly wood with a hint of Sega Genesis, so that meant picking up the Game Boy Advance version of Shining Force and weeping over the fact that no one has managed to continue the finest SRPG series in history properly. Sure, Final Fantasy has its devotees (mostly the same kids who consider agnosticism as a badge of hipness), but Sega's Shining Force will always have my heart and the associated monetary rewards.

Gameboi:
This week has mostly been about catching up with all the demos I missed while my 360 was getting worked on. At the top of the list was BioShock, which impressed me in all sorts of ways. I also quite enjoyed my short run-in with Stranglehold. Beautiful Katamari was nice, but ended waaaay too soon for me.

After playing through the demos of Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon, I have to say that I enjoyed the former a lot more than the latter -- which surprised me. Finally, I decided to erase my save file, and start from the very beginning with Overlord, since I couldn't recall what the heck I was doing in the game at the time it conquered my console.

Grim:
I really got into Castlevania: Symphony of the Night this week and beat it with 195% completion or something like that. Other than that, it's mostly been Burnout Revenge, the Mythos beta, and Punishment 2: The Punishing.

Dyson Grigsby:

Punishment 2: The Punishing? Seriously, is that really a game? Anyway, I've mostly been playing  demos this week, specifically BioShock and Beautiful Katamari.

BioShock was awesome and deserves every single point that it can get. Katamari was, like Gameboi said, waaay to short. Not to mention that it was the exact same demo from E3, only this time in English. Still, I love me some Katamari, so I can't complain.

Hopefully next week I'll get a chance to play this new game called Joust 2: The Joustening.

(Seriously, they really didn't call it The Punishing, did they?)

Now, ladies and gentlemen, it's your turn to tell us what you have been playing this week. Space Quest? Manhole? Phantasmagoria? SOMEONE MUST HAVE PLAYED A MID-90S ADVENTURE GAME, RIGHT?!

Amusing as ever Nex, I'm a huge fan.

Also, I can't wait for BioShock to start 'pumping my nads' too. 5 days to go...

During my exile this week, the only thing I ended up playing on my DS was Pinball of the Dead (mainly because I couldn't play Devil's Crush). One of my co-workers brought his PS2 with him to the hotel and we ended up playing all the way through co-op mode in Guitar Heroes: Overpriced 80's Edition. I also played trivia games on the tv at the bar.

2 hours ago I started playing Turning 20 and will be constantly playing that for the next 22 hours. Other than that, It's been playing the Bioshock demo, playing the Bioshock demo on hard, playing the Bioshock demo using only a wrench, etc, etc. And of course, painstakingly playing Out of This World in preparation of ROM Table Discussion.

I've been playing two Sega Genesis games that just about no one has heard of: Tinhead and Dinosaurs for Hire. Considering it's all I have (Sega/Nintendo ROMs) until my 360 returns, I'm... fuckin' bored...

Dinosaurs for Hire was based on the, now defunct, NOW comic label, correct? I may be wrong, but I do remember the game.

I'm still playing the same fucking game I was last week, because I only get about an hour or two of gaming in each day, and I like to finish a game I start.

Chrono Trigger still, since as I said before it's been at least 6 years since I've played it.

Man. Okay, this is what i'm playing.

Xenosaga, Super Contra (I'm going to get that Master achievement if it kills me,) Odin Sphere, Persona 3, Final Fantasy XII, and Hotel Dusk.

I'm trying to finish all of these before Bioshock, which I'll be able to get a day early. So wish me luck this sunday. There aren't enough hours in the day...

Played some Street Fighter Alpha 3 on Dreamcast, taking Dan all the way through World Tour. Yes, I now have an upgraded Dan, though I couldn't get him to level 32.

In honor of Metroid coming to VC and being 20 years old in the USA I decided to buckle down and play through it via Metroid Prime. I finally beat the damn game for the first time, and I didn't use a walkthrough or any hints for item locations, although I did learn of a particularly effective final boss strategy from someone. This game would be 1000x better if your health didn't always start at 30 when you continued, but it's still good.

Today (Saturday) I got The Godfather on Wii since it was on sale at Fry's. Throwing people through windows is great.

Awww poor Chad.

Lost Magic, Heroes of M'n'M III, Ragnarok Online, Maximo... I think that's it.

Next week my boyfriend returns from vacation with a Saturn including Nights and Shining Force III, and a Dreamcast which includes... well it's a Dreamcast... so yeah >.>'.

I'm trying(badly) to juggle playing Persona3, Rune Factory, and Luminous Arc. So far Persona is the game that's been eating up most of that time. This is my first Persona game and also my first SMT game and I really like the battle system and how it rewards you with an extra turn when you exploit weaknesses. ,'3

this week is giant robots week, so I've been playing AC4 (first on my ps3, then I sold it and got it for the 360) and then some delicious chrome hounds, and some lost planet VS action(robots with double jump is the best idea ever) some virtual on, and front mission four.
like I said. robots week.

BioShock Demo, Carcassonne, The Darkness, and I have both Persona 3 and Rune Factory sitting here waiting to be released from their shrink wrap prison.

Also, ran into a pop-over flash ad when I logged in this morning. It was for that stupid QuestionMarket survey. Here.

Spending $600 on a CRT HDTV so I can finally enter the HD era and almost another $100 on component cables (PS2, Xbox, and Wii, since I already had the rare Gamecube ones) hit me in the head the day after; how could I, a cheapskate, spend so much fucking money in one place, especially when I was going to snap up an Xbox 360 in a month (MS, why aren't the 65nm chips out for Bioshock) and Halo 3 Legendary Edition is going to cost the going rate of my liver?

In repentance, I spent the rest of the week working my ass off as a lifeguard, picking up as many extra hours as I could, to try to make at least some of that money back.

This, unfortunately, left me very little time for gaming, and now that I've saved it for the last sentence of a very long post that should be just about what I'm playing, I can tell you that I managed to get in some Boktai, Phoenix Wright, and .hack//MUTATION.

anyway, been playing mostly Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! and Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble on my DS(which i just got 2 Weeks ago <3).
I also tried me some FF3 and Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. They rock but I want to finish Viewtiful Joe first before I sink into another one.
On the PC I played a few duels of quake 3 and some pickup ctf. I've been playing q3 since s solid 7 years now and it doesn't get boring.

I started Luminous Arc and continued my addiction for King of Fighters by playing 2002/03 and 2006. The sheer amount of unlockables in 2006 is truly staggering; Hattori Hanzo dressed as a Gundam? Hells yeah. I picked up Planet Puzzle League today on sale for $22.

I have no desire to play Bioshock and I don't own a 360 anyway.

After noticing a reference to it in Persona 3, I had to dig up my PS1 just to fire up Eternal Punishment again. I'll probably get flak for this, but even though Persona 3 was addictive enough, it will never trump EP in my opinion.

Outside of that, there's that fantastic Bioshock demo that makes me wish it's Tuesday today so I can pick up my LE. Also played a bit of Parodius (complete with giant schoolgirl bosses) and Battle Circuit. I've been also trying to find this beat-em'-up I played more than a decade ago on SNES where you can knee someone in the groin which cues a "ding" sound effect, similar to the laugh track in God Hand. Anyone know what that game's called (it may have been import)?

I've been devoting my life(STILL) to Pokemon Pearl.

I just have to raise up my little monsters to pwn some little kids.

I just have to.

Oh, and I know a few adults that play it who talk a lot of shit.

But mainly, I do it for the kids.

I'm sorry, I've gotta respond to the Blake dis. To start, it does rhyme, you just don't speak the same English as Blake. As writers you should know that. But why dis Blake? English class got you down? I think you must come to appreciate and understand the art that came before, before you can understand the full value of the art that follows, including games.

I'm still playing Geometry Wars and Mario Kart: Double Dash. Oh yeah, and NBA Jam: Tournament Edition for my X'EYE.
