Destructoid's games of the week for 07/15/07: E3 edition! photo

With yet another E3 now behind us, I think it's prudent to take a moment to reflect on the life of Johannes Kepler. Why? I have no idea.

According to Wikipedia:

Johannes Kepler (December 27, 1571 – November 15, 1630) was a German Lutheran mathematician, astronomer and astrologer, and a key figure in the 17th century astronomical revolution. He is best known for his eponymous laws of planetary motion, codified by later astronomers based on his works Astronomia nova, Harmonices Mundi, and Epitome of Copernican Astronomy.

Before Kepler, planets' paths were computed by combinations of the circular motions of the celestial orbs. After Kepler, astronomers shifted their attention from orbs to orbits—paths that could be represented mathematically as an ellipse. Kepler's laws also provided one of the foundations for Isaac Newton's theory of universal gravitation.

It speaks volumes, doesn't it?

Here's what the editors have been playing:

Faith:
I'm playing CakeMania on my DS still and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii.  Let's hear it for awesome goat herding!!!

Grim:
I had a mini Dreamcast marathon with Soul Calibur, Rez, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 earlier this week. Most of my time was spent trying to stay caught up on E3-related news, but I did get some Sonic XBLA playtime in as well as a chance to try the demos for Stuntman: Ignition, Ace Combat 6, and Blue Dragon.

Leigh Alexander:
OMG, on Harvest Moon DS, its glitchiness finally worked to my advantage-- suddenly I had 999999000 dollars, and I'm now building an ANIMAL BARN MADE ENTIRELY OF GOLDEN LUMBER.

Otherwise, swapping between God of War II's extra modes and DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 3.

Nex:
Since all the hens left the roost and headed for E3 without me, I've been spending this week protecting the henhouse from foxes. Whether it's an attack from our Western flank or ... no, forget it. That wasn't going anywhere.

I spent the week pirating Kawaks and about 3GB worth of Arcade roms and having sex with 2D fighters the likes of which kids these days just don't understand.

(Side Note: Using the 360 controller on a PC is the greatest innovation MS has come up with since the original Sidewinder.)

Dale North:
In between E3 postings, I've managed to squeeze in rounds of Puzzle Quest PSP. Otherwise, its been Resident Weevil 4 on the Wii and Daigasso! Sound Brothers on the DS. Oh, and still.....Final Fantasy XII.

Colette Bennett:
My big excitements of the week have been Folklore, Super Mario Galaxy and Devil May Cry 3. I've played a ton of other amazing shit for every console though -- got to see Nights in action, Resident Evil 5, Brain Age 2, Revenant Wings, Lair, Jeanne D'Arc and probably about eighty other titles I'm too tired to remember at the moment.

Jim Sterling:
Sonic The Hedgehog and Golden Axe on Xbox Live, oh ... and Clive Barker's Jericho, bitches!

Topher Cantler:

Sonic and Golden Axe on XBLA, and ... are you ready for this? Galaga! Yeah, that's right, bitches, Galaga on PS2!! Har har! I bet you wish you could get your hands on Galaga for PS2! Namco Museum, sucka! Beat that with your ... your ...

... oh, wait. Nevermind.

Gameboi:
This week I messed around with de Blob, Pac-Man CE, and revisited Max Payne -- which is still just as great as I remembered it to be. I didn't spend much time with Overlord as I had planned, but put it aside until I had a large chunk of time out of my schedule to dedicate to it.

David Houghton:
Golden Axe and Doom on XBLA, an on-going Gears Of War marathon, and the pulse-thumpingly exciting game of Spending All Day On A Coach Down To London With No Breaks And A Full Bladder XZXXZXCore2: Turbo Revival, which has two different endings. Thankfully I got the good one.

Oh, and Clive Barker's Jericho, so smiles all round.

Niero:
I really, really, really liked Everyday Shooter. Every once in a while I see a game I kick myself for not thinking of first and this is one of them.  This game makes me happy. Fuck next gen. Pew pew pew!

(Editor's Note: I have no idea what the hell he's talking about ... -- Nex)

Ron Workman:
I drank. I made it through E3 without playing any games until right before it ended today. I drank.

Alex Ryan:
Other than playing Holy crap I haven't slept and Ron won't stop drinking for the last week, I've been doing a pretty good job of avoiding my Phantasy Star 1. Not because I've given up on my quest to replay the series one at a time, but because E3 has been so crazy, that if the game wasn't on the show floor -- it wasn't getting played.

What was played? Well, and I'll keep it brief, I had an AWESOME time playing Super Mario Galaxy, and an awesome time playing Metroid Prime: Corruption, and an amaaaazing time playing Beautiful Katamari for the 360. It's true that I played a whole bajillion more games than that this week, but those are the ones that stick out the most in my E3 rattled mind.

Hamsa "CTZ" Aziz:
I got some hands on time with The Ward for DS. It's going to be sweet. Also saw a bunch of other games at EIEIO but no hands on :(

Dick McVengeance:
Not a lot of game playing from me, but I'm planning on popping in Vagrant Story relatively soon and giving that a shot -- or Strider 2, if I can stand the fact that the audio skips.

Chad Concelmo:
I am so tired that I can't even see straight? What is it you are asking me? What gnomes have been plowing those weeds? Oh, what games have I been playing this week! Sorry.

ZOMGE3BESTWEEKEVER! I got some hands-on time with Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Wii Fit, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal, FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage, Contra 4, Dewy's Adventure, Eternal Sonata, Beautiful Katamari, Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure, Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire, Braid, Drawn to Life, Brain Age 2, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Crash of the Titans, Spyro: The Eternal Night, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Devil May Cry 4, Guitar Hero 3, and Rock Band.

Whew! Now, time to go to sleep.

Nick Chester:

Let me tell you this -- I am glad to be free from the wretched clutches of E3 2007. I was forced to play games like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Heavenly Sword, skate, Rock Band, Guitar Hero III, Medal of Honor: Airborne, Timeshift, Ratchet and Clank: Future Tools of Destruction, Silent Hill: Origins, Smarty Pants, Everyday Shooter, Pixel Junk Racers, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Singstar (PS3), Lair, etc. Seriously, I'm so put upon.

I'm happy to be home, because now I can get back to my regular routine of just playing Pac-Man: Championship Edition.

It also just occurred to me that I didn't play a single game on a Nintendo system when I was in Santa Monica this past week. I have no idea how I pulled that off, but just that alone should make Ron "I went to E3 and didn't play any games" Workman proud.

Aaron Linde:
Being that this was a somewhat unique event with not as many blockbusting, head-smashing announcements as we've seen in previous E3s, the little brilliant titles stole the show as far as I was concerned. Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles, Contra 4 and Phantom Hourglass were big hits for yours truly. On consoles I was thrilled by Mario Galaxy, enraptured by Devil May Cry 4 and -- my personal favorite -- absolutely blown away by Portal. It's everything I hoped it could be and more.

Did you go to E3? Did you have as much fun as we did? No, of course you didn't. You should still probably tell us what you've been playing, though. Maybe we'll take pity on you and send you some porn or something ...

PC:
Lost Planet: EC; I don't have a 360 so I'm playing it for the first time, good game, works fine with mouse and keyboard and runs well on a not-so-new rig.
Dawn of War GOTY: Missed it the first time around due to WoW (damn WoW). Beats the hell outta C&C3 imo.

Wii:
Resident Evil 4; on my like 6th play through, such a damn good game.
SSX Blur; just picked it up and other than the control's extreme learning curve it's sick.
Wii Play; busted it out to play with the family, still amazing the new Wii players.

Got any amputee porn?

I played with my penis this week
it was fun

so i've been playing...
VF5, its still a hit... that game can never get old.
nucleus, odd... but really good... Christians could probably find something that says something bad about cell manipulation in it...
golden axe, hell yes.
ace combat 06 demo, best unrealistic over the top fighter jet sim ever x2.
Tekken 5 dark resurrection, not as good as vf5... but then again no 3d fighter will equal that game.
virtual on: marz, finally arrived from ebay so I've been having a blast with it... sgt hatter NOOOOOO

I'm sick and tired of all the Johannes Kepler fanboys on this site. Why can't we hear some positive news about René Descartes for once?

I've been playing "Fuck, I think the power supply on my PC is dead" along with the same shit as last week.

Mostly Resistance: FOM, then I got impatient and I've been trying to play the Phantom Hourglass... in Japanese. It's amazing how much kanji I remember. It's also amazing how many different Kanji there are. And the hurigana doesn't help if you don't know the verbs and nouns... Takes a while to do puzzles you can't read the clues for.

Descartes FTW!

Oddly enough, the only game I've really been spending any long amount of time on is New York Times Crosswords for the DS. Damn my 3rd grade vocabuary.

Also, Monkey Ball is actually really good, although I wish that you could turn the wiimote on it's side and control it with both hands. Like Bleep said, tilting the wiimote forward can be bad on your wrists.

Also, cocks.

Nex, you are my brotha! After discovering CPS3 has been cracked, I downloaded all the Street Fighter 3's and Warzard. I've also been playing KOF's 95-2001, Magical Drop 3, and Twinkle Star Sprites on Gametap, too bad the online vs feature only seems to work for 95 or maybe my DSL speed just sucks I don't know. Bill payments drained my paycheck like a hooker so I have no money for a memory card for the PS2 so I'm getting insanely good at the first part of Prince of Persia and Indigo Prophecy.

I've been playing Doom, Castlevania: SOTN, Morrowind, Oblivion, Overlord, Gears, Jade Empire, and probably other I can not think of. But I am pissed that Too Human got pushed back again along with Mass Effect but I realized that Two Worlds look gorgeous and it seems like that game is going to be awesome.

Super Paper Mario and Red Steel over here. And hey, Red Steel isn't that bad. It's just...it's just the controls are totally for shit. But yeah, otherwise it's pretty spiffy.
Ah, and SPM is complete awesome on a disc.

Metroid Prime Pinball decided to be a bitch and delete my data a couple weeks ago, so I went back and beat it to unlock expert mode again. Then the next day I booted the DS up, it froze, and I lost the data again. So I played through once again, getting 19 million+ points in the process. If the damn thing does this to me one more time I'm throwing it down a well. Other than that, great game.

I started playing REmake on GCN and finally started enjoying myself once I got to the first item chest. Having only played RE4 before, I'd have to say the original RE has more in common with Zork than it does with RE4. Now I'm out of ammo, don't give into temptation and shoot all the crows, kids.

I think I played some Pokémon Pearl and assorted VC stuff too. Oh, and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on GBA. And Game & Watch Gallery 2.

Since I've been on vacation since 7/7/07 (OMGZ), I've managed plenty of time with Mario Kart DS, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center, Trace Memory, Big Brain Academy, Boktai 1, and Advance Wars 1.

I also learned that if your non-gaming sister is interested in something like Phoenix Wright, even though she almost never games on her own, you shouldn't lend her the game until you beat it, because what seems like a short matter of letting her catch-up to your three cases will take at least double the time it took you because she's not being all hardcore about it.

Looking forward to finishing Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center this week, as well as starting on Half-life.

Elite Beat Agents only just came out over here this weekend, and while I could of imported I'd not got round to it, plus I appear to have a slight phobia of internet shopping, I guess its to do with not being able to walk away after handing over my numerical currency with something actually physical in my hand.

That and you can hardly trust the british Postal Service anymore.

Anyway, I'm bloody loving it, currently attempting to do The Anthem and Lets Dance on Cruisin' difficulty.

@Radius Zero: I thought that about Red Steel, too! It gets a bad rap but it's nowhere near as bad as most people make it out to be.

Beyond that I'm still lovin' me some SSX Blur. Games that awesome should be illegal. I've almost got all of the ubercollectables and I've got Maya all decked out w/ full stats. I also beat the Super-Secret-Platinum-Tournament with a gold medal. Booyeah!

@necros, I hear ya man, my sister has my copy of Phoenix Wright right now. I beat it in under a week, she's had it for like a month and a half.

Oh... alright everyone here's an awesome trick: play Super Mario Strikers with as many human players as possible on one team against a rookie computer team. Don't worry about the ball, see how many tackles you can get in a 5 minute match. Our record last night: 263 (not including matches with sudden death overtime)
