Destructoid's 'Game of the Year' nominee recap photo

Oh, year end awards, how you divide and rile up the gaming community. We here at Destructoid recently had long internal discussions about our "Game of the Year" choices, finally narrowing it down to five of our favorite games released in 2009.

We knew not everyone would agree, but that's why they're our "Game of the Year" choices. Still, we wanted to soothe the savage Internet beast, and pulled out the big guns to keep everyone calm -- Lady Gaga and dance routines. Obviously.

Here are our nominees, in case you missed them:

Our winner will be announced tomorrow, taking the highly coveted Golden Mr. Destructoid! Check back to see who won, and hit the jump to see videos of our nominees. Did we mention Lady Gaga and dancing?

Dragon Age for myself!

As long as Borderlands doesn't win though, I'm more than happy. Gearbox banned people who legitimately asked about some broken/glitchy elements in their unfinished game on their forums, just to rake in more sales. It really irked me.

GaGa!!!!

Uncharted 2 or Arkhan Asylum for me.

I'm willing to bet it's L4D2 though.

I'm rooting for Batman: Arkham Asylum. The game does justice to my favorite superhero and still manages to be incredibly fun. Here's hoping Arkham Asylum 2 is good enough to get nominated next year!

Also, I have to say (and yes this is flamebait) but Dragon Age: Origins was not that impressive. I actually think I might agree with Jim's review for the first time ever.

@ thejobloshow- Why instead of Mario? How is NSMB Wii, the first 2D Mario game on a home console in over ten years, and the first one to pull off 4 player co-op, any more "tired and rehashed" than Uncharted 2 or L4D2?

I wasn't too impressed with Arkham Asylum. I felt that the combat was clunky, and, while it looked cool, fell apart when there were lots of baddies on the screen at once. Especially the last Joker battle (seriously, WTF?) when there were tons of dudes and you couldn't counter them all. It was quite frustrating throughout.

And I'm seriously supposed to believe Batman has a batcave on Arkham JUST IN CASE?

Double post for discussion!

@Holmes: "and the first one to pull off 4 player co-op" If by 'pull off' you mean make me want to punch all 3 people I was playing with in the face by the time we had finished playing, then yes. They indeed pulled it off. lolz

L4D2 will obviously take the award, even though it certainly shouldn't. Destructoid represents mostly PC gamers, very biased ones at that; and any game which is better/more evolved on the PC (in despite of the 360 port) will take the award. With that last statement, Borderlands probably has a good chance as well, unfortunately I don't think it's going to win anything, anywhere. Not even here. That's too bad.

And time to contribute.
I loved every single one of these games and I really don't mind any of them taking the prize. As much as I love Uncharted 2, I see D'toid going against the grain and giving it to L4D2. Which I don't mind it all. Also contributing a vote for Dragon Age.

And Torchlight!

The users, or the editors? I'm speaking of the latter.

Personally, I feel Uncharted 2 represented a honed combination of ,yes, 'derivative' game mechanics (here, that's not really a bad word); the voice-acting, music, plot, and characters merely amplified an already-excellent game.

L4D2 really just gave us more of the same, which wasn't really that great to begin with. Borderlands was founded on the same ground as Fallout 3; unfortunately, it didn't really 'improve' the formula, but just gave us more of what we like, with a lackluster story to pull things down. However, Borderlands did was great in the art design deparment. Haven't played NSMB Wii, but it seems a lot like a careful translation of the DS original to a larger screen.

Other than the demo, which I wasn't particularly impressed by, I haven't REALLY tried Batman Arkham Asylum, so I can't comment much on that.

All in all, I still think Uncharted 2 should win, but if it doesn't win here, it'll win everywhere else.

1) Lady Gaga is fantastic.
2) These dancers are fantasic, who choreographed this?
3) I only have one of thee games. Dag, I need to go shopping.
4) I know Jim hated AC2, but seriously, its definitely a top 5 game. Also, I want to see an Assassin's Creed 2 dance.
5) My vote goes to Uncharted 2.

6) I still want to see an Assassin's Creed 2 dance. If you hold a vote for honourary mention, can that video get a dance?
7) ASSASSIN'S CREED 2 DANCE!

I think it's kind of silly to assume something other than Uncharted 2 will win. It was the only game from 2009 in their 50 best of the decade. Why would they let something else beat it now?

Not sure where you're getting the "bias PC gamer" thing from our writers. In fact, I could count on one hand the number of writers who use their PC as their main gaming platform. If anything, we don't have ENOUGH PC gamers on the staff.

@ Revariance- Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. The level of player on player interaction that NSMB Wii offers is a first for a 2D platformer. It's amazing how simple it is in design, yet how different (and for my money, better) it is than other games that tried for the same thing like LBP.

@ thejobloshow- You know, I don't think Uncharted 2 did anything interesting at all. Just like the first one, it's just an action movie you can play.

That doesn't make me say "wow". It makes me say "yawn".

The only game in there that showed true innovation in being something "different" was probably Borderlands. That may not count for much, but for me it counts for something.
(I also think it's a shame that because Killzone 2 released so early in the year, people seem to have forgotten it)

Well, unfortunately for you, most of us think jumping on mushroom heads is 'yawn'. But only because we've done it so many times before.

I liked the DS original but a Wii rehash was completely unnecessary. It'd be nice if Nintendo would come out with more...original ideas, or, at the very least, make their ideas (even) superficially interesting.

Btw, why isn't Silent Hill on here? That seemed like an original title for the Wii.

But calling Uncharted 2 an "action movie you play" shows that you must've only played it on a superficial level, or that you have an extreme bias toward the Wii since..well, that's...your.. job.

Think I might go with both of those here. But, anyway, don't you think it's a little bit odd that MOST of the critics out there would completely disagree with you here?

I have feeling that Nick would go with L4D2 (possibly NSMB), Jim would probably align with L4D2, obviously Anthony will go with L4D2, Holmes, destructoid's 'lone wolf' would clearly go with NSMB.

Yep, I'm thinking Left for Dead 2, even though I completely disagree with it.

@ Waquan- I never said that Uncharted 2 was a bad game. It's incredibly well crafted. I'd even go as far as to say that it's the best there is at what it does. If I were to have reviewed it, I would have given it extremely high marks.

But did I enjoy the game? No, not really. Same goes for the movie 2012. If you love seeing stuff blow up and fall apart, then yeah, it's a great movie, one of the best ever. Same goes for Unsharted 2. Shooting guys, seeing stuff blow up and fall apart has never been done better in a game.

It more a matter of genre-preference than quality. The fact that you don't like NSMB Wii makes me question your interest in the genre. Ask anyone who really loves 2D platformers, and they will tell you that NSMB Wii has incredible level design and that the multi-player completely changes the way it's played. They'll also tell you that it's not a rehash of NSMB DS.

And for the record, NSMB Wii isn't on the list because we had some sort of "Wii quota". Enough of the editors liked the game enough for it to be nominated, and that's it.

If I recollection serves, Half-minute Hero, Demon's Souls, and Dragon Age all almost made the list as well.

well, if we're going by the ps3 twitter giveaway numbers, it's easily nsmbwii. i'm sure that the reveal tomorrow won't show such support to the big n, but for me, nsmbwii is the best game this year, if not this gen.

also, calling nsmbwii a rehash of nsmbds is a joke. the difficulty alone puts these two titles miles apart.

Hearing that Half-Minute Hero and Demon's Souls almost made it, kinda makes me sad, man. Those are games that need the boost, need the recognition, and deserve it for being interesting and fresh.

There's no reason to hate (or even dislike) NSMBW or Uncharted 2. They're solid, just not special.

Fair enough, Holmes. I do actually have an interest in 2D platformers (why would like like NSMB DS, after all?), but I haven't even played NSMB Wii (I believe I stated this before). I can only go by what I've seen on Gametrailers, and what I've seen there tells me it's something I've already played. I'm not saying that it is, I'm just saying that it LOOKS like a rehash.

Seeing a game that I've already played bloated (stretched) on an HDTV is not something I would look forward to---obviously I'd have an inclination to go with the DS alternative. I'm not a graphics whore, and I'd certainly prefer better gameplay over better visuals, but if I had the option of picking between the same game...well, I'm sure you understand that part.

Still, I plan on playing ALL of these at some point in time, since I do have an interest in all of them.

The "Wii quota' sounds silly when there's several multiplatform games on the list (and the multiplat doesn't include the Wii, unfortunately).

While dragon age is my personal goty, resulting from a heavy preference for rpgs and good, in-depth storytelling, I will readily admit that it took me a full playthrough and a lot of forum reading to really get into it. But once you get into dragon age, it just doesn't let you go.

Looking at these nominees, it seems a big factor is how well a game can introduce you to the mechanics of the game, then cut you loose to have a good time asap. If you look at Demon's Souls and Dragon Age this way, it is easy to see why they aren't up there. Now while L4D2 and NSMB excel at this, I don't think there's enough meat in the game to warrant goty. For that reason I personally would never put them on a top 5 of 2009 list. I can't really complain though, having so many fantastic games in one year is good for everyone.

I would love to see Borderlands or Batman take the gold. No offense to L4D2, Uncharted 2, and NSMB Wii, but there was little to no doubt (in my mind at least) that those games weren't going to be amazing.

But Batman just succeeded in so many ways. Accessible stealth and combat, level design, graphics, and a show of respect for source material that licensed games don't see.

Borderlands is probably the best open world shooter out there.
