Destructoid review: Snake360 photo

Today marks a most eventful day, for today is the day I try and write more than a single paragraph on Snake. That is what this game basically is. It's Snake. It has the number 360 after the title, but there is no denying that this is, indeed, Snake. The very fact that I've spent the first paragraph repeating myself multiple times should be a fine indication of what a struggle this is going to be.

Read on as we attempt to review Snake360, which, as you may have already gathered ... is Snake.

For some reason, I am going to assume you don't know what Snake is, so I have an excuse to explain it to you. In Snake, you control a line -- or Snake, if you will -- that travels around a grid, eating little targets and growing in length with each delicious bite. The Snake doesn't stop moving, and you have to steer it around the grid, making sure it doesn't hit walls or its own ever-growing tail. Of course, you know that already.

It has to be said that, for a game of Snake, Snake360 certainly packs a lot of content. There are over 200 stages, mostly consisting of different shaped walls that you have to navigate around, as well as co-op and four-player competition and online rankings. In addition, there are a variety of gameplay modes, but each one is a very basic play on the main one. If you really love Snake, then there is plenty of serpentine sauciness to keep you going. If you really, really love Snake

The bold, bright colors and HD visuals make this look a little better than your average game of Snake, but it's incredibly difficult to line up your Snake properly with the targets, and it can be a very frustrating experience. The fact that Ernie from Sesame Street also seems to be commentating during each stage is quite amusing, but strangely unsettling at the same time.

Perhaps Snake360 would be worth more of a look if the production values were higher, but as it is, there is no escaping the fact that this a game given away for free on old computers. The graphics might be a step up, but certainly not a step up enough to justify any sort of cost. It is, ultimately, a bunch of colorful lines whizzing around a very simple screen of shapes, and while that is possible to be tarted up and made interesting, not enough tarting has been done.

The game also lacks any sort of original gameplay features to make it a step up from another, more free version. While there is certainly more content, it's not new content. I'm sure that the fundamentals of Snake could be used to support even wider game types, but there is nothing in Snake360 to corroborate such a claim, unfortunately.

The title does nothing bad, per se, but it doesn't really do anything good. Rather than evolve the core gameplay of Snake, it just adds much more. If you like Snake a lot ... and by a lot I mean an incredible amount ... then you might want to check it out. I would also recommend a download if you want to check out just how much like Ernie the commentator sounds. It's worth a quick trial, but at 400 Points, Snake360 is asking a lot.

5 -- Mediocre (5s are an exercise in apathy, neither Solid nor Liquid. Not exactly bad, but not very good either. Just a bit "meh," really.)

Can we have a remake of that game where you play as gorillas throwing banana bombs at each other? It was like Worms, but a lot worse. D:

I'm downright astounded that you were able to manage 7 paragraphs. If I was the guy who made this, I wouldn't even bother submitting it for a review.

Dammit AgentMOO.

I liked the version in Timesplitters 2. That music was awesome, and I found it hilarious you could use it in multiplayer.

The only thing that would make the bit before the jump even better would have been a Metal Gear Solid reference at the end. I think everyone knows which one I'm talking about.

There's a guy on this gaming forum I go to, who's friends with the creator of this. He tried to pimp it out, and even suggested using the face buttons to move around since the D-Pad sucks for it.

But nothing he said could entice any of us to buy.. well... Snake.

Hi all,

I am the developer of Snake360, which was developed over the course of 11 months.

I'm disappointed that Suffocation Battle mode, easily the most innovative feature of Snake360, was not mentioned at all. It's been a real hit at every party I've brought it out at. It's a battle mode for up to 4 players where you must completely trap your opponents to win...sounds easy, but isn't. (There is a more conventional battle mode as well.)

I'm also disappointed that the challenge of the harder levels was not discussed. Much of the fun to be had in this game is in clearing the challenging levels. Expert and Master difficulties are a blast to play, and I personally guarantee that anyone who manages to clear these levels will both have fun and feel that their $5 was well-spent (if you succeed, and still disagree, I will most definitely pay you back).

There are other significant features that were not mentioned as well: replays, Kid Mode, the licensed soundtrack with almost 30 minutes of music...

A review is just one opinion; I feel that Jim just doesn't like this sort of game. I designed this game for the hardcore retro arcade gamer first and foremost. It is most definitely not for everyone, and if you didn't like Snake before this will not change your mind. However, I hope that all who read this will give it a fair shot if they like challenging retro arcade games and don't mind the graphics, which I'll admit aren't very good.

If you have difficulty lining up with the targets as Jim may have, you could try using a different camera angle. Two of them place the camera above the snake's head, making lining up much easier. The controller will also vibrate slightly when you line up correctly (can be turned off if desired).

Finally, I'll mention that there are still two weeks to enter the Snake360 Holiday Contests. Regardless of what you think of the game, there is still a good chance to win your share of $450 in Microsoft Points and LIVE subscriptions. You can find more info about both the contest and the game at www.snake360.com.

Thanks to everyone who read this far, and thanks Jim for reviewing the game. I'm sorry that you didn't like it as much as I did.

Hey yyr,

Thanks for responding! I'm sorry we didn't agree on the game either, but I'm glad you're not taking it personally or anything. Thanks very much for accepting the challenge and I hope to see more games from you in the future.

All I can add is that if you don't object to the simple gameplay, and you enjoy competing on online scoreboards, this game is a godsend. Call me weird but competing in this was more enjoy able and lasted me more hours than most games on disc.

Hats off big-time to anyone willing to review any community game :D I hope the concept survives.

Also, for those interested, this video shows off a lot of Snake360's features.

I firmly believe that saying this game plays just like the old Snake is like saying that Pac-Man Championship Edition plays just like the old Pac-Man. There's a lot of content and I hope some of you enjoy it.

So far Community Games have been pretty mediocre as a whole. But they ARE improving.

at first we got such AAA titles like Swords n Monsters (lol), but now with people learning how to use the program better and get more creative, We're gonna get some real hits. The Dishwasher is a perfect example of this.

good job, honestly. I'm liking this move on microsoft's more and more as I try out more and more titles.

Oh come on. Snake360 is the epitome of Snake games. The number of different modes and levels is so thorough and the customization options are so extensive that I can't imagine anyone ever wanting anything else from a Snake game ever again. The job Aaron Teplitsky did with such a basic concept is insane, and reading this summary of it is frustrating because it seems like you barely gave the game more than a cursory glance.

It falls into the same category as games like Marble Blast Ultra and Super Monkey Ball that are extremely pure and simple but that you could spend a lifetime perfecting. If I had only played other Community games and heard there was a Snake game out, I'd probably have the same reaction, but it seems like more work went into this than 90% of the other Community games out there combined.
