Destructoid review: Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero? photo

Dood! So, like, there's this game, dood, where you get to play as the Prinnies! They're, like, the heroes, dood! I guess that's because they have to be, otherwise Master Etna will kill them...

So, I hear you like side-scrollers on your PSP, dood. Well, dood, this one should be interesting for you to try. I mean, Master Etna doesn't really care about our safety, so she's made this extra hard. The health benefits for being a Prinny really suck too, dood.

Alright, I'll stop. Today, we've got NIS' side-scrolling adventure that's a spinoff from everyone's favorite RPG, Disgaea. Follow me after the jump to see how ball-bustingly hard this game can be, and whether or not it's worth your hard-earned cash.

Dood.

Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero? (PSP)
Developer: Nippon Ichi Software
Publisher: Nippon Ichi Software
Released: February 10, 2009
MSRP: $39.99

Etna is a demanding bitch. She's always bossing around Laharl and the Prinnies, and in this case, it's no different. Someone has eaten her ultimate dessert, and now the Prinnies need to go out and find all the ingredients -- otherwise she'll kill them all. What is a Prinny to do?

Don the magical scarf and try to collect the ingredients, no doubt! Etna, in her infinite wisdom, gave the Prinnies a scarf that saves them from dying instantly when hit -- instead they go a whole three hits before dying! "But what happens when the Prinny dies," you might be asking. Well, the answer is simple: they just pass it on to the next one.

In preparation for battle, the game puts a thousand Prinnies at your disposal. And trust me, you need them. Prinny is notoriously hard -- a combination of Mega Man and Ghosts 'n Goblins.

The levels are designed simply enough: run through a platforming adventure while dodging enemies at every corner, and try to collect some secret items for the hell of it before facing off at the boss. Now, what makes this game oh so special is that the enemies are some of the most frustrating things in existance. Typically, while you're in the middle of platforming, an enemy will appear on the edge and attack you in mid-air, sending you falling to your death.

Oftentimes, the enemy placements are put there just to punish you for not having the foresight to predict that they would be there. So, the game sends you back to one of the several checkpoints and has you do it over and over again. Now, I know that I'm not very good at this type of game, but as the levels went on, I would lose upwards of 40 lives on a single stage. And then get to the boss fight.

The boss fights make you want to chuck your PSP at the wall -- simple as that. They have attack patterns, sure, but there's a lot of fluidity in there and it very often results in you losing half your health within the first few seconds. More often than not, the boss fights ran me about a half hour long and caused me to lose anywhere from three to thirty lives in the process -- many of those from just blowing myself up in frustration.

One of the more irritating things is that you have to be quick at it, seeing as you've only got three minutes to complete a boss battle. Stages are given eight minutes, and when you die, the clock is reset, even if you're at a later checkpoint, which is nice. Oftentimes the stages are fun, especially when you're trying to rack up combos by stunning enemies and earning prizes like extra HP or points bonuses.

Sitting back and thinking about the game, it can be fun. It really can. But when you sit and play it? It fluctuates very frequently between fun and painfully irritating. Too often the game would just punish me, like I mentioned earlier, for not having the divine wisdom to see ahead of me on the stage. I would be mid-air, and I'd land right into an enemy, sending me back into a pit. It probably wouldn't be so bad if the game let you adjust your landing mid-jump.

So, is Prinny worth it? Perhaps if you're into this hard-to-be-hard sort of thing. You masochist. But for the rest of us, the game is going to be too much of a pain to really enjoy.

Score: 3.5 -- Poor (3s went wrong somewhere along the line. The original idea might have promise, but in practice the game has failed. Threatens to be interesting sometimes, but rarely.)

Well, if the game sucks, at least I won't feel bad about not being able to get it cause I don't have a PSP. :)

So basically the game is bad because it's hard? Might I interest you in a copy of Prince of Persia? What's that? Too difficult? How about My Sims? Ah, that's better you say?

I can't stand Ghotsts & Goblins style jumping, so this game just lost me. Quite a shame, as it looks like a great concept.

I'm eating it up. It's the first game of the You're Going to Die a Lot subgenre I've bothered to finish because I think it's any fun at all. It's not everyone's cup of tea though, don't think I don't know that. For crap's sake, I blew through maybe three hundred of the guys on my first run. The final boss has ridiculous health.

So, y'know. We're still cool.

Wow, I'm surprised it scored so low. It also seems like the review is a little too short, even if it is fair.

The lack of movement while jumping is immensely frustrating whenever any kind of judgement is required in the platforming (is why i havent progressed very far). Other than that, the game is fairly entertaining, both in gameplay and style. Also, any trouble you had with bosses better not apply to that feasting ogre; once i figured out how to beat him, it took no effort at all.

Im kind of torn at this point because i kind of agree with a 3.5 score for some parts, but just thinking about the parts involving prinnies and talking makes me want to play it some more. Dood.

I love this game. It's ball-bustingly hard but once you do beat the boss, or get to the next checkpoint, you get an amazing sense of euphoria. I love the graphics, the sprites, the music, their quirky sense of humor, and i love the difficulty. However, i found it interesting that they even put a hells angel mode in, it'd be near impossible to defeat many of the bosses.

It's not really the challenge that annoys me, but rather it's just not a very interesting game. You never seem to earn any new abilities, and it never seems to ge more fun. Just frustrating.

That was one of the shortest reviews I have seen on here. And my least favorite I have ever read, 2.1/10. But really, if you just bash it for its hardness what about Mega Man 9? It is damn hard. And you said you eventually learned the lay out of the enemies in it, but why not prinny? They just take time to learn where they are and what they do. You didn't list any positives, only focused on why you didn't like it. Yeah, it is hard as hell, but I think it is still fun to play.
Bad review in my opinion, but it's your opinion.

Megaman 9 gets a score of 9, and this 3.5. What a frigging joke.Wake up champ. Im not even that big a fan of this, but ive played both, and hands down this game is a million times better

Truth. The worst thing is that I realized it too late. I was Trying to beat on of the last stages and then it hit me. For the whole game I did the same frustrating thing with no reward whatsoever. No new power ups, no new abilities, even the hub world didn't get anything new. The whole game is centered around you getting pissed off from every game mechanic they put into it. From jumps that don't let you change direction to god awful bosses that you will have to try to beat over and over and get nothing in return.

I'm glad I didn't preorder this. I'll eventually pick it up though. I enjoyed what I played of it so far and it's kicking my ass like it's primary influence: Ghosts and Goblins. Controls are quite similar down to the not being able to redirect yourself in midair without the double jump. I'm just curious how many people bitching about the lack of mobility in midair have played the original Castlevania games on NES.

Though I do agree with several people here: This review does give the reviewers opinion quite well it fails completely when it comes to showing any positive points. Even if you hate the game there has to be things you enjoyed (or even can see that others might enjoy).

I personally found the game to be gorgeous, quite entertaining and up there with Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins in difficulty. But I couldn't stand the butt stomp being required to do damage. Though it is funny when you miss and fall down a hole to your doom. That always makes me giggle.

Also there's DLC for this game already. Don't know how much it costs but it's a new level where you meet Flonne.

This reminds me of that debacle with God Hand back in 2005.

This review makes me sad. The game has so many good points. I'm waiting to borrow it myself (can't afford to buy right now), but what I've played so far was incredibly charming (even though it was in Japanese and I could barely understand the story). Even through the language barrier it wasn't hard to understand the controls (like the butt stomp) and the gameplay. And it's just beautiful. I'm not just saying it because I'm biased, though I definitely fall under that niche. See icon =P

Woah. 3.5? Wow.

Personally, I love how difficult it is, and I keep it on the 1-hit-death hard mode. Challenging=fun for me I guess.

Your going to complain about a game being too hard when it gives you 1000 lives to go through it? What did you expect? To have 950 of those lives left? Prinnies are the cannon fodder of Disgea of course they'll die a lot. Do us a favour and don't review Prinny 2
