But it's taking all my willpower to not go buy it on Wii right now.
You know, I keep playing through all these Mega Man ROMs, and I pretty much never have fun. I don't get it. The game design is always made in such a way to cause as much frustration and failure as possible. Limited checkpoints, minimal health packs, limited range of motion, not terribly fluid controls, mindbendingly frustrating platforming, some areas that are explicitly and intentionally designed to hurt you no matter what you do... These games shouldn't even be listed as video games. These are fucking Rubik's cubes for folks who either have way too much time on their hands or those who are god-like in their 2D platforming ability.
I like Mega Man's design, I like the concept... I hate the gameplay. It may be splooge-worthy for some, but to me, it's broken. Sorry, Megs.
Yes it is.
Eh, to each his own. There are several popular game genres (past and present) that I simply can't comprehend as being "good" or "fun" either. Guess that's just how it goes for most things though. *shrug*
I'm enjoying the hell out of this game, even if I'm terrible at it ><
@ Yojimbo- What was that? You DARE do that?
@ TheBorbes- Can you name another game character that has lasted for 20 years, has a library of over 100 titles that and has spanned across every single home console since the NES? Do that, and I'll crown that series the Star Wars of gaming.
Until then, mind your P's and Q's.
@ Gangles- I was waiting for that. But for serious, don't get me wrong. I love the Splash Woman fight and the character, just not the stage.
Bitterly ironic, isn't it? The first ostensibly female boss in the series gets the mediocre treatment. I would have hoped that her stage would be the most memorable one given how much hype surrounded her presence. Pity this couldn't be the case.
The ending was a mix of awesome (THIS IS WHERE YOU WENT WRONG. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN. AND AGAIN...) and a mix of terrible (BZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!). I wish it were more climactic, because everything in the beginning pointed towards something really epic and awesome.
I'm looking forward to this when it comes out on 360, you did a good job.
I could have done a whole paragraph about those little details in MM9 that show the same sort of care and attention to detail that has always been the benchmark of the greatest games in the series.
The way little sparks fly off Mega Man's foot if it gets too close to a Magma Beam, the way the flame dragon reacts to Tornado Blow, the way Mega Man turns inky when inked, concrete-y when concreted, the Giant Shark... the list goes on and on.
I really could ahve made this review a 50 paragraph piece on all the good things about MM9 has going for it. Don't take my nit picking too seriously. I just thought it better to set your expectations low on a few of the games lesser points then to keep them too high.
I think it sounds like music you'd hear in one of the later Sunsoft NES games like Journey to Silius or Batman.
And to be honest, I don't think that's a bad thing at all.
I haven't beaten it yet, but its been a blast to play. None of these bosses/stages/weapons are taking the place of my favorites, but they're all incredibly good.
For anyone that's played the ZX games, the "signature" is in the Robot Master boss fights. These 'bots have serious patterns, and its no question that there's design influence.
Happy!
I have all the NES games and, I believe, all the MMX games from the SNES. I haven't beaten any of them, but I'm pretty sure I've tried them all, most of them multiple times.
I will admit that they do have their bright spots, though. In fact, I just played through some pretty damn clever sections in MM6 (the bouncy ceiling/floor, and the water on the ceiling). But overall, it's frustrating and annoying, and I've been tearing my hair out since I was a kid.
"like a cute, 8-bit Saving Private Ryan staring a little blue robot." staring = starring
"One major problem with the game is Spash Woman's stage." Spash = Splash
Otherwise, nice review, though I'd really like to read one from somebody who isn't already a gigantic Mega Man fan. Yes, it's worth it to the series faithful, but they've already purchased the game. What about those of us who think Mega Man should die, or those of us who haven't ever played a Mega Man game before?
Get Dtoid to pay me, get me a copy, and I'll give you one hell of a review from a non-fan. ;) Or just hire me to proofread these posts. That's me, an anal Mega Man-disliker.
Also, random facts:
16 bit sprites > 8 bit sprites(forgivable in this case)
8 bit music > 16 bit+ music
Megaman Zero(the first one) is the hardest Megaman game
Splash Woman tears like paper to the Mega Buster
Hornets make cool projectiles
Now if we were to talk about any of the MMX series games...well, that's another story, I love those games. I guess it's just a matter of preference.
Hah...see concrete man is the retarded cousin of Guts Man just as I said.
Either way I will get this game as soon as I find a working connection to my wii.
@ Sharpless
"These are fucking Rubik's cubes for folks who either have way too much time on their hands or those who are god-like in their 2D platforming ability."
I fit this description, therefore I love me the Mega Mans of yore. And we do have an anal spell checker, his name is Samit.
I do understand however that not everyone feels that way and that this is a proper old-school 'Hardcore' game, like R-Type and others the reward is simply getting good enough at it to beat it.
It is nostalgic fan-service but I love that they decided to do 8-bit gfx. Pixels FTW.
I'm tempted to buy this on WiiWare, but I'll need to wait and see if I'd actually have time to play it or not.
This isn't about genres. I love platforming games, but I can't stand the original Mega Man games on NES. I don't mind the installments in the original series for SNES, though, and the Mega Man X series is absolutely amazing. The game play in the original Mega Man series for NES is just hampered by awful controls in that they don't quite feel right and are too limited to make avoiding certain hazards virtually impossible for just anyone. You really need to love difficult games to love NES-style Mega Man games. Sure, my skills aren't what they used to be, but I've NEVER liked the NES Mega Man games.
If you do want to ever beat one of them I would reccomend either Megaman X or Megaman 8, the two that I personally fell are the easiest.
Or you could go out and get the two games that I consider to be the best Megaman games ever produced, Legends 1 and 2. They're totally different from the others, and in no way does it detract from them.
Because I still love platformers, I'm willing to spend the $10 for the Wii version and give the game a review from a non-fan's perspective if anyone will be interested.
@CWal37
I had fun playing Legends. I wish I didn't sell my copy though. A PSP release would definitely make me a happy gamer. + points on the clunking sound when you run.
I also have to say I find people's comments RE: Splash Woman's stage to be a bit exaggerated. I thought the music was just fine and the level is pretty solid, considering that it's obviously the level intended for you to finish first. And don't act like every other game in the series didn't have one of those(Bomb Man, Air Man, Top Man, Toad Man, Star Man, Wind Man, Burst Man, and Grenade Man were all designed to be completed without the use of any special powers) Splash Woman fills that space quite nicely, and she even takes the most damage from the Mega Buster, which isn't an uncommon feature in the later games either(Toad Man and Burst Man were CRITICALLY weak to the Mega Buster, in so far as it actually being their weakness.) The complaints about the re-use of the Bubble section are also unwarranted, I feel, because it's not like they didn't re-use other types of jumping puzzles either(The rain in Tornado Man's stage, for example.)
I also hate that Megaman 4 never gets mentioned in the "Greatest" lists of the series. It's easily just as good as 2 and 3, and it's the only game in the series other than 7 that actually had a -balanced- Charge Buster that didn't override the special weapons you get from bosses. Do people hate Pharoh Man that much?
