Thanks, Anthony. I don't have to feel stupid now.
Do I?
So anyone who's played both this and God Hand, I want a verdict - Is MadWorld God Hand 2.0?
That's how fun is really represented.
You probably would've thought it was worth it if you would've bought it though. The game is pretty fun :D
@ Magnalon- MadWorld is not God Hand 2.0. It shares a lot more in common with Dead Rising (360) than anything else.
At first, I was disappointed with that, but is didn't take long for me to love the game for what it is.
@ RonB- About game length; does it really matter in the long run if a game takes eight hours or four hours to beat, as long as the game entertained you enough that you'll be playing it again and again for the rest of your life (or at least, the next few years?
I tend to measure the value of a game not in the length it takes to complete, but the length of time I spend thinking about it after I've beaten it, and how much I plan on playing it again.
Also, it took me a little seven hours to beat MadWorld. Anthony is too good at videogames for his own good. I doubt the average person could beat the game as fast as he did.
He also beat Bit.Trip Beat the first day he got it, which is pretty much the most insane thing ever.
Good review. I don't agree with Anthony though (I found it didn't get repetitive at all even with multiple playthroughs).
With action games being my #1 genre, I get really disappointed when there's not much reason to come back other than 1 additional difficulty. Ninja Gaiden Black had the right idea: harder difficulties actually change enemy models to make it feel different; you want to S rank every level (like MadWorld); you get challenge rooms after beating the game.
@Holmes
Thanks a ton for that weigh in. I've just heard that from a number of people and I wanted to get someone's opinion on it. Did you like God Hand, by the way?
Awesome!
And after you beat the game, tell me what you think. I was leaning on giving the game a 9.0 until the last couple levels. Like I said in the review, the game actually gets easier towards the end, which is sort of a bummer.
I <3 this game.
i liked godhand because it was fun. it felt like it was half finished, but i didn't care because i was enjoying myself. IMO it's a great exmple of a game that's more than just the sum of it's parts.
as for madworld, i don't understand why it's a wii exclusive. it's good to see adult games on a generally kiddie oriented console, but i can't help but think it would sell better on any other platform. ah well, if it does see a 360 release i will definitely pick it up.
I'm pretty close to finishing it though and I see what you're saying. But I'd be lying if I didn't say I want another one ASAP. :)
Well I value length when I'm looking at I game I'm on the fence about buying, which is nearly any game I'm interested in, I'm very cheap. I've bought plenty of games that offered a ridiculous amount of entertainment. It's just that you can't know ahead of time if you will want to play it over and over and over (except for special cases). I may love this game, or I may have fun with it and never feel like going back to it. I really don't feel like spending $50 on a gamble.
Yes, MadWorld suffers from some technical issues and the gameplay length and replay value are reasonable concerns and the multiplay does feel tacked-on, but a game of this quality and how unique, cool and fun it is deserves a better score than a 6.5 in my opinion.
I realize that the reviewers said that the game is only 4 hours, but I have played the game for that amount of time already even though the in game clock says 2 hours, the Wii keep track of time played. You won't get through everything on your first try either. At least, I didn't. I bought the game a week ago and don't regret my purchase. The look is great and the controls and music are awesome.
Secondly: I'd argue that the score system on its own doesn't lend itself to replay if all the levels are the same. I felt like I WAS replaying the same levels by the time I got to the last few levels, where in something like, say, We <3 Katamari I had absolutely no qualms about playing the entire game three or four times because the individual levels were so different and rewarding on their on merits.
To answer your question, MadWorld with two people is a lot like MadWorld with one person; you'll get as much out of it as you put into it. If you play the challenges straight up, you'll likely get bored of them fairly quickly, but if you're playing with someone that likes to break the rules, you can really make your own game out of it. You can kill each other as well as your enemies, which can lead to a lot of fun.
Also the bike riding sucked.
A game like GodHand has enemies that exist to challenge the skill of the player whereas, MadWorld's enemies exist to simply be killed in creative and brutal ways. That's the focus of MadWorld's gameplay. Although, the bosses and the few tougher opponents are challenging enough even on normal mode and can easily kill you if you are not careful and often times, it is not because of enemies taking cheap shots.
Out of all of the levels, the second to last level featured the most challenging enemies in my opinion.
I've beaten the game 11 times now and still love it to death despite the repetitiveness of the gameplay and relatively short length and the technical flaws of the game's camera and lock-on system.
The game doesn't take that long to finish mainly due to the quick flow of the combat and the pacing of the levels. Unlike in No More Heroes, MadWorld actually does does something I appreciated; it cut out the bull shit parts. You know, the unnecessary and typically less enjoyable ways to extend the gameplay length.(like being forced to earn money by doing boring jobs over and over again).
Speed runners can easily beat the game in 2-3 hours but it will probably take the average gamer 4-5 hours to finish. OF course, like Destructoid mentions in its review, the game does not include the time of your deaths and the cut scenes.
i give mad world a solid 8.5 as well. it's FUN and looks & controls great, and that's what games are supposed to be about, not contemplating shit like "the internal psyche of an artillery officer who becomes a parent and grows old". that doesn't sound like "fun" to me.
The driving sections tend to last for quite a while but they're weren't that many of them. There's only 3 ways to kill enemies during this time (chain saw attack, grab & throw them out of their vehicle or crash their vehicle). Other than that, all you do is drive forward, use the boost and occasionally jump off ramps.
As for the combat itself, MadWorld's gameplay is repetitive and simplistic despite the amount of ways offered to kill enemies via environmental hazards, pick-up items and locker items. On the bright side, combat is solid, satisfying and addictive. Killing one enemy (or multiple enemies at one time even) after another is done in a fluid and quick manner, perhaps to where it is similar to No More Heroes.
That's fucking retarded. NMH is way more repetitive than this is (although neither of them ever actually get repetitive).
Please don't rent Madworld. Please buy it. If you don't, fucking retards like Peter Wanat will continue to say that good third party games can't succeed on the Wii.
I agree that the last few levels are not quite as brilliant, but it brought my mental score from a 10 to a 9.5. There are flaws, but they are completely acceptable in context with the fucking awesome that the game is.
God I love this game. I'm not sure where I place it in terms of No More Heroes. NMH definitely had better bosses and a better story, but Madworld had a guy with a chainsaw on his arm....
Bah. They're both so awesome.
Sadly, even without playing the game, you guys have confirmed everything I thought this game would be. Namely, a good rental, but not worth the full price of admission.
I cleared EVERYTHING in God Hand (hardest difficulty, all Fighting Ring challenges etc.) so I don't think this game would last more than 4 hours for me, with maybe another 4 for hard mode. Perfect amount of game to spend playing co-op at my friend's place over a rental period.
Even if it doesn't, you might end up loving MadWorld enough to play it to death, just like you did with God Hand.
I hope you do rent it and find out for yourself. If you do, let me know what you think.
@ AKK- I can't speak for Anthony, but I'm guessing that he just felt more of a connection with NMH. I could see why he does, but I definitely don't share his opinion.
You'll get the same amount of mileage on your first play through for each, I reckon. Deadly Creatures was very solid, and runs the similar dramatic waggle play book as Madworld/No More Heroes. Deadly Creatures, I feel, has about 0 replay value, save for REALLY wanting to collect things, if you're into that sort of thing. That said, its a refreshingly solid and unique Wii experience.
I'd go with Madworld for a buy, Deadly Creatures for a definite must play at rental/on the cheap.
