Destructoid review: Lost Planet photo
Depending on how you look at things, Capcom's Lost Planet for the Xbox 360 was Microsoft's latest killer app in the ongoing console war. It was one of the most talked about and anticipated games over the past few months. The question is ... was it worth the hype? Find out what we think after the jump.

Reverend Anthony

First things first: Lost Planet is not one of those games we can lovingly refer to as "truly next-gen." While its graphics are beautiful and its gameplay is essentially exciting, the controls are sluggish, the camera unhelpful, and the story irrelevant.

First, the good: Lost Planet is a gorgeous game. From the snow, to the bugs, to the explosions and smoke (and by God, there are a lot of those), pretty much everything about Lost Planet's visual style will make you glad you bought an Xbox 360. And, at first, that pride will last -- as we all saw in the demo. Blasting your way through a limitless supply of Starship Troopers bugs can be very entertaining for a while, and the boss fights make up some of the most entertaining, old-school battles I've seen in a year or two.

And that's more or less where the game's strengths end. Every other aspect of Lost Planet is flawed, albeit in very new and exciting ways. Take, for instance, the fact that the game is both frustratingly hard and insultingly easy. On the one hand, your character is slow to get up and gets blown off his feet after damn near any attrack, which can lead to long stretches of time where you get hit, you fall over, and you wait three seconds to get back up before you're hit again and you have to start the whole process over.

On the other hand, the AI is so violently unintelligent that you can literally run past armies of bugs (or space pirates) without taking a significant amount of damage or missing anything particularly important. This weird dichotomy permeates every aspect of Lost Planet's gameplay. The camera allows for quick rotation and easy targeting, but there's one boss fight where (while inside a mech) you have to constantly look straight up and fire at a bug's kneecaps.

Subsequently, the camera gets really low to the ground and angles upward so you can aim, but the camera is placed in such a way that 70% of the screen is taken up by your mech and you literally have to look around your mech's shoulders to see anything. The grappling hook is pretty fun, but you can't fire it in midair (which would have been really, really helpful).

All in all, Lost Planet is a fantastic rental game. It requires no long-term commitment (I finished the singleplayer in about 5 hours), it's fun in short bursts (assuming you choose to play the more difficult way and actually engage the bugs instead of walking around them), and it has one of the most boring, inconsequential, irrelevant video game stories I've seen in a while. While Lost Planet's arcade-style gameplay occasionally offers some exciting moments of old-school gameplay, there's really not enough here to warrant a purchase.

Final score: 6.5

Nick Brutal

Without a doubt, in many ways Lost Planet is truly a next-generation title. The sprawling, snow-covered landscapes are awe inspiring in high definition. Explosions in the environment produce some of the most shocking effects -- you can actually feel the density of the smoke as it blankets the landscape and hinders your field of vision in a realistic fashion. Snow falls from the sky as wind whips particles unpredictably, to and fro. Graphically, it's truly a remarkable title that showcases the abilities of the Xbox 360.

The key ingredients for an enjoyable experience are all here, too. Running through areas and shooting up the Akrid (the game's alien-bug-monsters things) is a blast, particularly when destroying them leads to such a pleasingly juicy explosion of orange guts. While your monster-hunting weapon selection is a tad limited (and completely predictable), the ability to hop into the mechanized Vital Suits (VS) adds another layer to the carnage. And when actually used, the grappling hook ability brings back fond memories of the classic Bionic Commando (and more recently, the Game Boy Advance title, Ninja Five-0).

So it's regrettable to find that Lost Planet is a severely average shooter that suffers in more ways than it should. For starters, the game's narrative quickly delves into slow, overly-predictable Anime territory before it really gets started. Cut scenes drag on for what seems like ages, and I had to force myself to sit through many (some of which don't even have any music!) just so I could keep up with what was going on, and why. I guess it's a double-edged sword that the game was so short. With only 11 missions (a few of which merely involve moving through a small area and then facing the colossal boss), the game is over before you know it; but I found myself relieved I didn't have to sit through any more of the tired cut scenes.

The gameplay itself is overly simple to the point that, after a few missions, you'll have seen and done nearly everything there is to do in Lost Planet. Every area involves running through a mess of enemies (either monsters or snow pirates, both of which are equally as dumb) and then fighting a gigantic boss which will either be a big, bad VS or a big, bad monster. In the case of the VS, just shoot it until it explodes; in the case of the monster, target its orange eye/stomach/nose/anus until it turns red and explodes. Realize that when I say "running through a mess of enemies," I truly mean it -- while fighting enemies in many of the areas might increase your chances of survival (and fun), feel free to run by all of them until you reach the boss. Capcom apparently doesn't mind; they already have your $60.

Final score: 6

Robert Summa

While I certainly respect and see where my comrades are coming from with the single player side of Lost Planet, they seem to have forgotten the real reason to own this game: multiplayer.

Hell, it's the reason to own most shooters nowadays. While the single-player portion certainly has its moments, playing online is really where the action is and where the game shines. Before you jump into it though, know and understand this concept: organized chaos.

Why do I say that? Because that's what Lost Planet's multiplayer is. It's not so much jump in and dominate like other generic shooters, but instead a complicated mess of chaos that you'll soon unravel with more and more play time. With the amount of action going on with VS (mechs) and bodies and explosions and objectives, you'll think Gears of War multiplayer was a quiet walk in the park.

So, if you're like me and merely run through a couple hours of single player before getting into what you really want to do -- multiplayer -- then Lost Planet is a perfect destination. In many ways, it's a refreshing departure from the standard shooter's multiplayer. Pick it up, try it out, and you'll see what I mean.

Final score: 8

Strangely enough I'd have to agree with all three reviews. The single-player mode is pretty weak, whereas as summa pointed out, the multiplayer's pretty good. Personally it's not enough to keep me going though. It's definitely not a system seller. But it's what you'd expect from Capcom. They make good old-school/new-school hybridized action titles, with the exception of Dead Rising as their one truly original game of late.

All three reviews were really good.. giving this thing anything below a 7 is kind of f-ed up. 6.5 should belong to a game like God Hand, or Superman. They all have the graphics and capabilites, they just don't use them.

(Summa I totally agree with you on the multiplayer.. how come Ant or Nick didn't add that into their review?)

Thank you Summa, for actually mentioning the multiplayer. I was worried after reading the first two reviews. That it would be forgotten and the game would be judged solely on it's lame single player. Rev and Nick only reviewed half a game.

Isn't it funny how people say, "this shooter isn't like all the other shooters." I only find it funny cause EVERY shooter says that! If EVERY shooter says that...wouldn't make make every shooter in the same category? I mean even saying you buy a shooter to play multiplayer (yes, they don't really contain deep stories, but SOME have) kind of plays into that. Maybe it is just me...

Just some food for thought...

No mention of Extreme mode? Capcom are a staple for games that make you want to throw your console out of the window, and this certainly delivers that on the later levels. It's a very easy game to play, but there are things to make it more interesting (The markers in different positions on different difficulties for example, and the optional bosses).

Multiplayer, like Summa said, is definitely where this shines. the levels are just genius to play online. I don't know if anyone here has played a 4 team game of post grab, but it is by far the most mayhem-fueled multiplayer game I've ever played!

The boss battles are what make the game for me, but I think it's only because I'm playing on a 92" screen. At that size, the scale of the big bugs is really impressive.

That said, the single player isn't all that compelling. I haven't even finished it, because any time I'm playing and someone sends me a R6:Vegas invite, that disc can't come out fast enough. I guess I should try the multiplayer in Lost Planet eventually, huh?

Can we see more of a review, details, of the multiplayer mode? Besides being more chaotic than gears of war multiplayer does it have any points that make it better than other games?

Also how easy would it be for a someone who isn't good at multiplayer to sit down and have a fun time with it?

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but one thing I noticed with multiplayer is that it takes a LOT of hits to kill people. I'm not too sure whether this changes with the whole leveling system as I haven't played enough yet.

Very poor reviews, expect for the last one.

You guys dont mention multiplayer at all, which is by far very fun. You can level up, its fast paced the lvls are very well layed out. You also dont mention the fun achivments, like "Giant Worm Killer". I have a buddy who never plays videogames and even he is addicted to Lost Planet multiplayer, he has not touched single player.

I only played it for a bit at the store. It was great because when I finally picked up a gun I discovered that the fire button was stuck so I unloaded my ammo in a couple of seconds then promptly died for no apparent reason.. I'm assuming it was hypothermia.

Though this game was crap when I played the demo. Was in awe of how people found it anything but bad. Now it looks like Nick and Rev's reviews more or less confirm how I felt.

And since multiplayer doesn't interest me, all the positive points of Summa's review have no effect on me.

Also, Snaileb, if you're wondering why I never take your offer to hop into Gears multiplayer it's because I wanted to get through the game single player hardcore before I tried putting my newb ass for all to frag in multi. Figure I better be able to handle hardcore A.I. before I tried to take on human A.I.

While I agree with many points, I don't think I'd give scores that low. It fun on a completely visceral level. If I feel like blowing crap up without expending any brain power, I got my game. I'm really, really tired of hearing, "MP is why you buy this game." I buy games to play SP, thats what the game is! MP is fun, but should be extra, second to the MAIN game; devs put too much into MP and not enough into SP. If you want to focus on MP, make an MMO.

Well, I'll play through the single player mode on almost any game, simply because I don't like playing against racist children on Live. I'll dip my toe in there to try some games, but a lot of them I don't mess with multiplayer. GOW is different enough to where I like it since it's something visually striking.

I would have played through LP's single player and given up on it.

Half Life 2 has the BEST single player game I've ever played for a FPS and I look forward to the 360 upgrade coming here in the next few months since I miss this game since I switched to Mac last summer.

Also, totally.

I have to agree with loquax on the point about the ratings. 6.5 isn't bad - it's a rental, which is exactly what Rev said. I just don't buy the recent trend of giving every game made an 8.5 or above.

I found the game worthwhile mainly because of the boss battles, the modern shooter is severely lacking in that department. The unique elements such as the grapple hook and VS's helped lost planet, but I must agree that the campaign could have been less repetitive. The quirky controls certainly didn't help either. Nonetheless, I think the game deserves a 7, as the multiplayer added some value to the game, which rev and nick failed to mention. Good reviews.

Good reviews, although I think Summa's focus on MP is a little skanky. =) I would like to know in more detail what his impressions of the SP game are.

Multiplayer depends a whole lot on the people you're playing with. If you play with awesome people you know, it elevates the overall MP experience. If that's not possible and you jump into a random game, you're more likely to be stuck with a bunch of assclowns. "Game experience may change during online play," indeed.

Re: accommodating the game as good visceral entertainment - That's fine, as long as you realize that that type of game has been done a dozen times before, and better.

I was kinda meh'ed by Lost Planet when I ran through it at a friend's house. The game is beautiful, no doubt. But the hit recovery time and the frequency of knockdowns was frustrating rather than simply difficult, and I really missed the Resident Evil 4/Gears of War over-the-shoulder view.
