You may have noticed that we've been talking about Left 4 Dead an awful lot lately. While we petty Destructoid editors jumped around, hurriedly calling dibs on our favorite characters, you may have wondered when the actual review was coming.

That, or you were so busy playing the game yourself that you really didn't care when we'd get around to reviewing it.

Either way, this is the review. How did Conrad Zimmerman and I feel about Left 4 Dead's gory, ambitious blend of single-player aesthetics with a cooperative experience? How does the versus mode match up with the campaign? If you only own a PS3, should you be really depressed, or just regular depressed?

Hit the jump to find out.

There's never been a game like Left 4 Dead.  Single-player and cooperative videogames have been around since the dawn of the medium, but they've never before been combined with such care, style, and intelligence. Left 4 Dead takes the pleasures of a great multiplayer experience and, at least in its campaign mode, marries them with the meticulous pacing and spectacular scenarios of the best single-player games.

In its primary campaign mode, the game drops four (hopefully human-controlled) survivors into a zombie-infested wasteland, forcing them through five different maps and hundreds upon hundreds of Infected humans. There's no narrative, no character development, and no fluff: you're given only the slightest whiff of plot (through Portal-esque scrawled messages on safehouse walls) and who these characters are (through their wonderfully voiced contextual dialogue) before being let free into a gorgeously rendered world of pus and bile and exploding heads and film grain effects.

Though the AI director can sometimes screw things up -- spawning a tank roughly twenty feet away from the survivor spawn point, for instance -- the campaigns deliver pretty much everything one could want from them. Each self-contained scenario is wonderfully paced, full of high-stress sequences contrasted with even more terrifying lulls in combat where the players must brace themselves for the next inevitable onslaught, finally culminating in a grueling, timed showdown against a seemingly endless wave of the Infected.

erere

Though each campaign only lasts about an hour (assuming you don't die), they individually feel like complete, totally satisfying experiences. About halfway through "Death Toll," it occurred to both my friend Ulisses and I that we were experiencing a single, unbroken rush of adrenaline that started the moment we stepped out of the first safehouse and would only end once we died or succeeded. Once Left 4 Dead's campaign sunk its hooks into us, we remained completely at its mercy, our hearts pounding with every step, our hands sweating at every turn, our headsets occasionally punctuated with squeals of either fear or gore-loving glee. There were no two ways about it -- Left 4 Dead had made us its bitch. Though Normal mode is way too easy (Advanced quickly became my difficulty level of choice), the four campaigns are fun, scary, and, thanks to the dynamic AI director, surprisingly replayable.

In case you're worried about an hour-long campaign feeling too short, don't. After completing my first campaign, I was so mentally and emotionally exhausted that I was incredibly thankful for the short campaign length. Though the gameplay never really changes up in any spectacular way (you're always going to be either shooting zombies, preparing to shoot zombies, or healing yourself after you've finished shooting zombies), the short campaigns keep the experience tense and hectic, just as a horror game should be.

Satisfying as the campaign mode is, many gamers have rightfully expressed worry that, AI director be damned, four one-hour campaigns wouldn't be enough to give Left 4 Dead the longevity of, say, Team Fortress 2. That's where versus mode comes in.

Versus mode is neither a carbon copy of campaign mode with controllable Infected, nor a completely separate gameplay experience. It takes the settings and director AI from the campaign, but tries to be more multiplayer-friendly by focusing more on the player-controlled special Infected than the weaker, mindless running zombies who populate the co-op campaign at every turn.

erere

Unfortunately, it can be really damn frustrating to play versus as a Survivor. Out of the several hours of versus I've played, I've only seen the Survivors actually survive through a full level a handful of times, mostly because they either had the more powerful second-tier weapons, or the people they were playing against sucked really, really bad. Far too often, the versus matches take on a depressingly predictable structure: the Survivors get out, the (much more frequent) special Infected attacks do small amounts of damage to them for about ten minutes, then the game spawns a Tank and all the Survivors either die immediately or are so wounded by the encounter that the next round of Infected attacks does them in permanently.

Since the player-controlled Infected spawn within 30 seconds of their deaths, and since the Infected are so damned powerful and annoying, and since Survivors can only gain points by physically progressing through the map, the Survivor experience usually consists of the team running as far as they can, as fast as they can, simply to get the distance points they need before the special Infected respawn again. The suspenseful, meticulous pacing of the campaign mode is all but absent here: where the campaigns had moments of quiet to make the action sequences even more frightening, versus matches tend to be, at least for the Survivors, relentlessly stressful, and can often times feel downright unfair.

For instance, if the AI director spawns a tank three minutes into the level during a co-op campaign, it's not a big deal -- you just die, and try again. If the same thing happens in a versus match, you're just plain screwed. If the game randomly decided to rape you with a Tank earlier than it did when your opponents played through the same map, you're left with a crappy score just because the AI director decided it wasn't your day. Playing as the Survivors is the only way to get points in versus mode, but it also tends to be pretty damn frustrating.

erere

This, of course, makes it really fun to play as Infected. As a Survivor, it can get really, really irritating to constantly be pounced upon or lunged at by a Hunter; when you're the Hunter, however, it's just plain fun. The Infected experience requires a completely different play style, and is pretty much responsible for whatever fun you'll be having in the versus mode. It's unusually satisfying to unsubtly blow away every zombie you see as a Survivor, then suddenly switch gears and become a stealthy, strategic, sneaking little bastard who uses pouncing, vomiting, or strangulation to destroy your opponents in a war of attrition. I still think, however, that the Hunter takes too much damage to kill and shouldn't be able to constantly jump around the map like a madman without stopping to recharge.

On another note, I can't help but ask -- why are only two of the campaign maps available in versus? It's one thing to do like Team Fortress 2 does and only include a few maps with plans to incorporate more through updates and stuff, but these maps already exist, on my hard drive, in the campaign mode. Why on Earth can't I also play them in versus? Maybe the process of optimizing a map for a different game mode is more complicated than I realize, but I can't help but feel a little frustrated that the mode which is supposed to give Left 4 Dead its long-term staying power currently only has two maps to choose from.

erere

It also bears mentioning that the server browser, or lack of one, just plain sucks. Rather than allowing players to choose their own servers, the game automatically and randomly finds an open dedicated server for the players to use. This can mean irritatingly long wait times as the game tries to find an open server (which it often won't). Even when you finally find a server, it might just happen to be on the other side of the world; the game might choose a laggy UK server even though three of the players are American. The server finder only works about half the time, which is borderline ridiculous considering how well every other multiplayer Source game handles server browsing.

As a co-op game, Left 4 Dead is literally the best the genre has ever seen. As a competitive experience, it's still very entertaining, but ultimately conflicted and uneven. But that's okay; I'll just play campaign that much more. Campaign mode is so damn fun, and so damn suspenseful, that Valve could have just released that and Left 4 Dead would still be a must-have. As it stands, Left 4 Dead just happens to be a must-have game with a versus mode cherry on top. The cherry's a little bit sour, sure, and it's still got the pit in it, and it's been cut in half, and sometimes you can't connect with the cherry because you're not allowed to actually pick the cherry yourself but have to instead rely on a half-blind chef who rummages around in a bucket full of week-old cherries before handing you a random one, but hey -- it's still a cherry, and it's on top of an orgasmically awesome sundae.

Made of zombies.

Score: 9.0

Conrad Zimmerman

Conrad Zimmerman

Left 4 Dead really only does one thing: have a team of survivors kill zombies, and vice versa. There are only six different types of zombies, at that. In description, that sounds rather shallow, but the attention to detail and the AI director keeping things nice and random prevent that sense from prevailing when the game is actually experienced. You will not play two rounds of Left 4 Dead in exactly the same way, ever.

This is a teamwork game, through and through. If you want to hamper your enjoyment, let alone your chances for success, the best thing you can do is play with people who are either incapable or unwilling to communicate and work together. Halo this most certainly is not. As a result, pick-up games filled with random people often wind up a frustrating mess, which limits the appeal.

erere

Computer-controlled Survivors are surprisingly capable, in the event that you don't have enough players to comprise a full team -- almost too competent, one might say. They observe every sort of special zombie and eliminate them with quick precision (a nightmare for Infected players in versus mode). Unfortunately, they will often stick around in an area to eliminate every undead in sight, and it's easy to leave them behind when they spot something that hasn't had its head blown off yet. Since there's no way to issue commands to them, there really isn't anything to be done about this, and it can be a bit annoying.

While the four campaigns are excellent fun and are given a fair bit of replay value through the AI director system, the versus mode is where most players will find themselves drawn once completing them. Going against player-controlled zombies requires planning and commitment to the plan. Playing the zombies, on the other hand, means getting to watch those plans fall apart, as there are nigh-infinite ways to throw a wrench into the Survivors' works.

I don't quite see eye-to-eye with Anthony on the multiplayer balance issues. The special zombie types are not particularly difficult to put down, although their abilities can have a fairly crippling effect. I found that, between the spawn time delay and the relative ease with which zombies in general can be killed when compared to the survivors, things worked out to be pretty evenly matched in games I played.

erere

Where the mode really goes wrong is in the amount of available content. The versus play is so compelling, it boggles the mind that Valve would choose to limit it to half of the campaign. Yes, there are differences in terms of item location and appearance frequency of Tanks that randomize the experience, but that isn't really enough in the long run. Areas such as the hospital's uppermost floor, a maze of unconstructed rooms in which it is quite easy to become disoriented, lose a lot of the challenge after you've managed to commit the path to memory and know the map like the back of your hand.

None of this is to say that Left 4 Dead is a poor game. When you're playing with a good team, against another good team or just the AI, it is exquisite. There just simply isn't enough of it, especially when the elements all seem to be there to expand the versus mode. It smacks of the sort of DLC where the contents are already on the disc, yet must be purchased separately to be made available. It's a dark stain on an otherwise stellar title.

Score: 8

Overall Score: 8.5 -- Great (8s are impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.)

I didn't know this was going to be a multi-player centred game. Now I'm not so depressed I only have a PS3.

Whoops, wait it's on the PC too, right? So why would you be depressed if you don't have an Xbox? You still have a PC unless you're on a mac. and mac owners have 360s even though they hate microsoft enough not to get a pc xD Just kidding. I shouldn't post when I'm ill. :(

This is what I have noticed with many Valve games. They give us something stellar, but just not enough of it (Generally I am referring to maps). And this is where my favorite part comes in, community maps. Free, frequent, and often very good. Of course there will be a few orange maps, but there will be lots of good stuff too.

Now I need to brush up on my Hammer Skills :)

My left hand literaly aches from playing so much Left 4 Dead. I think I've put in around 20 hours since it came out. The game is absolutely awesome

I was REALLY stoked for this game. Then I played the demo and I don't see what all the fuss is about. I've purchased everything Valve has put out and I can safely say that they are my favorite developer out there. But this just feels like kind of a lazy effort almost. I feel no tension while playing the game and just because something has zombies in it doesn't excite me. I don't want to hate, because I really, really wanted to like this game. I just don't see why everyone is making a big deal out of it. Are we playing the same thing? I would have given it maybe a low 7.

Valve is probably the closest I come to being a fanboy, and this game is somewhat of a disappointment for me. I wasn't even that hyped up to begin with. The game is fun for about 5 hours (once through each campaign and a few rounds of versus), but after that I feel like I paid way too much.

Portal only takes about 2.5 hours to complete, but I'd happily pay $50 for it. The problem is that Left 4 Dead is designed around one thing: replayability. But what, really, is so replayable? Is the fact that zombies rush at you from a different direction the definition of a unique experience? Or the fact that you have to fight a tank over and over and over in slightly different places?

I'm usually very particular about the games I purchase at full price, and for the first time in a long time I feel like I've been cheated.

Yeah it's basically just a source mod with zombies, but hey, when it's so damn fun I'm not going to complain. Worth 60 bucks? totally. Versus is a hoot (I think Anthony is taking it too seriously, just sit back and have fun. I honestly didn't care if I won or lost in versus mode matches, it was just so fun). The four campaigns are delightfully replayable and always entertaining, you'll have some of the funniest and intense moments ever in a co-op game. Once my friend fell off a roof, I was going to pick him up but then the 2 other CPU's fell off as well right next to him. I start laughing at it, the CPU goes to help but they end up falling as well. So then as I"m dragging my friend up a smoker grabs me! naturally we are all constricted so we lost, but it was fucking hilarious! I got a faceful of smoker tongue and the rest of my team is hanging off a rooftop, absolutely hysterical. Then when the chopper finally came at the end of chapter 1 me and my friend (the other two guys we were playing with died) just made a dash for the chopper blasting through a wall of zombie with shotguns... it was awesome.

Playing co-op with three other buddies is clearly the way to go (unless you're in multiplayer, with seven other buddies).

This is where the replayability comes in for me - sure, you get to know the map and everything, but the game is significantly different every time you play it. Your friends won't cover your back the same way twice, you won't get trapped the same way, etc.

Plus there's just an intangible delight I feel whenever I bust a zombie's head open with a well-placed round from the assault rifle. Love it.

I can see why some of you guys don't like it, but I think Steve was just a little less than sane with his Valve/Asshole argument.

Valve made exactly what they said they would and if any of you have a problem with that you obviously had your hopes much too high or just don't pay attention.

Personally, I love this game and that's all that matters to me. The money I spent on this game ($45) was more than worth the experiences I've been having.

I'm not a big FPS person. Hell, I'd go as far to admit that I just either down right hate them or just can't get into them. But fuck do I love Left 4 Dead. It might just be the first new game I've bought in years. I usually am kind of antisocial when it comes to games, but the multiplayer co-op in this game feels so brilliant that I'm actually willing to interact with other people.

I've played the full game with other people but currently only own the demo. I plan to own it very soon (or I'll just rent it for an extended amount of time). Add me: MikuHaru (360 version)

I will probably give it a go, just because of all the hype its getting, but I can't help but agree with some of the other posts here.

From what I understand, it's a generic 4 player co op shooter, with no story, average graphics, no special gameplay features, and ball achingly short.

I can't see how this will be any better than any other co op shooter out there, but I guess I will find out.

It be a ten if it had 8 campaigns rather than 4 but hopefully it aint gonna cost too much when they come.

This may be the first Destrutoid review I actually agree with. The game is great but there is simply not enough content, making PC pretty much the only way to go. Also, if you're not having fun with the game, I suggest to go get some friends. And not just "HERE'S MY GAMERTAG! HIT ME UP! friends" but actual, real life friends.

Versus mode is not a topping, but the main way to play the game. However that's only fun for griefing as infected when you play with random people. Get 8 friends together with mics though, and it's a really incredible experience. An incredibly stressing one (in a good sort of way). If everyone does not agree and work together, it's crazy how much you act like real stressed zombie survivors. Constantly bitching and yelling at eachother, it's an impressive social experiment. Getting through the levels as survivors is really not that insane if you stay together and don't get too much bad luck, as enemy damage is considerably nerfed to make up for the difficulty of more infected. Many times Tanks end up spawning in crap locations and can be taken down much faster than an AI Tank and do barely anything.

However I wasn't aware only No Mercy and Blood Harvest could be played versus, though I wondered why I never saw the other maps being played on that mode. Hopefully PC version should see that fixed soon enough, along with patches to nerf the Hunter a bit (it needs to be a few jumps max, so you can get in range, but can't escape freely if you miss), and make the Smoker actually capable of doing the insane shots the AI always makes (it's really awkward to aim the tongue right now, as you can't even see it when it fires and it takes forever to recharge).

Also there's already custom maps in the works, which should do a lot to keep the game going for PC.

I agree with SephirothX. This game feels exactly like Half Life and that's not a good thing. The controls feel entirely too loose and the most mundane of tasks, like picking up items, is a pain.

I do, however, dig the co-op aspect, and slaughtering thousands of zombies.

You can play the other two campaigns in versus, Rev, via a hack. Some Goon servers are running them with success. If you want to play them, go into your install directory, make copies of all the Dead Air and Death Toll map files (there's three files per map and five maps per campaign) and add vs to their file name, just like the vs maps for No Mercy and Blood Harvest have. Then you've just gotta find a server running them.
The reason that they're not officially in versus yet is that Valve's rebalancing the maps for versus individually- If a part of a map gives the survivors an advantage over the infected, that's just the way the map is. Nobody cares if the computer's slighted. However, that same situation in versus leads towards an unfun experience for the Infected players.

The biggest, easiest example you can see in the game of co-op vs versus balancing is the air conditioner unit at the very beginning of No Mercy. In coop you can jump on an AC on a nearby building and down to the ground, skipping the apartment building entirely at the cost of some fall damage. In Versus, that AC's gone- the survivors have to go through the apartments.

Everyone crying "Half-Life 2 mod!" can go fuck themselves with a machete. If you can't appreciate this game, put it down, stop playing, and shut the fuck up. This game is solely about having fun with your friends, and it succeeds.

That said, I was afraid this game would get a ten, especially if Anthony reviewed it. I'd go with a 9, as well. Its one shortcoming is that it feels like it belongs on another Orange Box. It just doesn't look like a complete game. Fortunately, DLC is on the way...

Steve, real gamers know how lame this game is, don't worry about the wannabe's makin fun of you. Left 4 Dead is easily the most overhyped and underexecuted game of this year, and maybe the last couple years. The game is nothing but a horridly generic run and gun first person shooter that reminds me of the days of Doom. The only strategy is to AIM FOR THE HEAD and STICK TOGETHER. Sure it's pretty damn hard on the hardest level, but hard just to be hard has never made something good. The replayability on the co-op is a joke, and only for people that enjoy doing the exact same thing over and over(having the enemies come out in different spots does not make walking down the exact same path any more exciting, it's still just wave after wave of the same retarded zombies) Anyways, nobody cares but I give this game a 0.000000001 out of a billion, it's that bad.

i thought it was really cool at first, but as a single player game...it gets old really fast. nothing changes throughout the game except for the environments, and they are actually pretty limited once you explored though a few times to trigger every zombie flood. i was hoping for a doom-like experience, where i used to play the same levels over and over, getting a thrill from 40 monsters warping on front of you... but it's really quite repetitive. fun for awhile, but it almost feels like a game full of demo levels. maybe that's just because of the complete lack of storyline.

You can have aserver browser you just have to turn it on.

They disable the damn server browser that was in the other versions. Until all the Pc people bitched about the lame simple ass USELESS console crap they switched it back on.

(I mean seriouisly the xbox 360 version is horrible)

To disable it and enable real PC game stuff where you once again have real contol.

turn on the Developer Console.

hit the ususal ~ key as most command consles are on PC.

type in

openserverbrowser

hit enter.

PC Server browsers will be enabled and you will not have to pull your hair out dealing with that xbox 360 like console crap.

Seriously if making PC games look like simple dumbed down xbox 360 games is to attract the clueless xbox 360 crowd to PC then that will be the day I drop FPS games...

you can also do stuff like enable 3rd person view and stuff like, the usual fps PC stuff.

If I'm being as objective as possible, then I give this game a 9. I would probably say something like there isn't a whole lot of variety in the campaign mode, and while it is extremely fun, every level simply consists of fighting zombie horde after zombie horde with some boss infected thrown in randomly, and a tank fight here and there. I would also say the versus mode is fun at times but overall leaves something to be desired.

But I don't review games for a living, so I can fanboy out and say things like: "who cares about its shortcomings, this game is fucking outstanding".

@ReddenBlack:
Your role in the party actually does change depending on what gun you pick up. Basically if you have the Shotgun, you're the tank, and if you have the Uzi, you're the pew pew. At the second tier they give you long range as well as medium and close. So you can have a different experience depending on which gun you pick up.

I though about having survivors with slightly different stats -- I imagine I'd say Bill is more accurate, Zoey is faster, Francis has more health or a stronger melee, and Louis is balanced -- but really, it would just end up being "Wahhh, you got the better char, Bill is cheap, I want Bill, you always play Bill, I never get him". Better to just avoid all that.

I second sentiments that Zombie Jim Sterling is in that first screenshot.

I can pick this up here in Korea for $30 new, thanks to the low value of Korean money right now :)

It looks good, but I was just reading that DLC for Team Fortress 2 took such a long time because MS was forcing Valve to charge for it when they wanted to make it free.....so they wanted to wait and put together a great value before they had to charge people for it. So, there's a good chance DLC won't come for a while, and that it'll cost ya....I hope that's not the case.

Wow. So this is THE polarizing game of the year. That's cool. Hello to the trolls and the jealous PS3 fanboys. Also hi to the addicts. I feel your pain too.

First off, I have not yet bought this game. I, like may before me, convinced one of my friends to drop his hard-earned cash on it to leech off his 360 version for awhile before making any final decisions about the game.

I'll say that I feel that Conrad's review was very fair. This is an 8.0 game. I really really hope that Valve releases a bunch of free content for the 360 to boost that, but that probably won't happen, and at release the game is very deserving of that 8, and probably not a while lot more (or less).

That being said, I love this game. It's probably my game of the year so far(it's sadly been a very slow year), and I'm looking to purchase it as soon as I can convince myself that I'll have the money come time to pay the bills.

If you played the demo for hours without really losing interest, go buy it. If you're unsure, find someone who has it and play the first level through on normal, then give versus a shot. That should convince you one way or another.

This isn't a game for everyone. Especially the douches. And the people that waste my zombie time by running haphazardly through the levels as humanz. Try at least people :D

Give it a shot. 8/10

L4D Server Browser Sometimes will only respond once search for game has been initated / you are already in a lobby. (if you see someone join and then immediatly leave a looby this is probably why).

And yes the only thing ive found 'wrong' with verses is only the 2 campaigns and the random tank - should be disabled IMO, other specials are as effective when human-controlled. My party once got a tank right when we were all caught up in some narrow, windy cooriddors - hulking insta-death. When we got ours in the next round it was right in the open - useless.

I think this review is spot on, score wise. Its great, but there are some flaws hampering it (namely lack of content). But I know Valve will remedy it, like they always do.

And really, to everyone who is bitching about content, or to the worried individuals wondering which version to get (to which I say PC) and if it'll be worthwhile, I want to point out that as soon as Valve releases the Source SDK for this, the game is going to explode with content. Sure there will be crap maps. But there will be some damn good ones.

And the Crossroads Mall map spoken about above is supposed to be a re-creation of the mall from the movie Dawn of the Dead. It was originally for a source game (probably even the Zombie Panic mod), but once Left 4 Dead announced, I think they've been working on bringing it to the game. They actually have a full campaign planned out on it (and even a faux movie poster!), and I must say, it looks damn good. You can go to l4dmods.com and get more info. about Crossroads. I know I'm looking forward to it.

Great review guys, and to the pompous assholes, GTFO. Just because you got ass-raped by a hunter while being curb stomped by 20 normal Infected doesn't mean you get to bitch, especially when you don't give the game a chance at its maximum capability (team of all humans, or 3 humans. advanced or expert difficulty. and for kicks and giggles, try to get the witch hunter achievement). rant and commenting over.

Valve: Hey, those consumers sure do seem to like the zombie mod for CS:Source. Maybe we could capitalize on that to generate more revenue. Let's polish up the mod and add some minor differences and release it as a full game!

Consumer whore: NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM!

I will admit, I am STILL sore about waiting a year to receive HL2 after I preordered it. This just reeks of the new business model game companies are adopting. Release half a game (in this case, having only 2 maps available for MP seems like enough to make me mad) and milk people along the way for more cash. Yes, valve will probably give maps to PC gamers but it will be when they have decided to push "last ditch" sales of the game. Xbox owners will get the usual nickle and dime bit again. I (perhaps because I am an older gamer) have really tired of the way this has unfolded. If a game is released with the obvious idea of profiting later on code that should have been included in the first place I will not be buying it. I have been burned too any times and cannot forget the glory days of UT and Quake that made gaming so great.

I am off to play some Urban Terror now. It's free you know.

This is probably going to sound bad, but how the christ can anyone honestly think that the player infected have too much health? You die almost instantly, not to mention the slowdown effect when you get hit.
