Destructoid review: Grand Theft Auto IV photo

Better late than never, it's finally here -- the Destructoid review for Grand Theft Auto IV. Wanting to give this review our fullest attention, we wanted to make sure we had played enough to feel comfortable in our knowledge of the latest GTA before we attempted a review and give you the most honest, unaffected-by-hype review on the Internet.

Given the vastness of GTA IV, you can see how this might take us some time.

The hype train for Grand Theft Auto IV was a large one, and one that is still continuing to roll. With such high expectations, Rockstar would have had to deliver an opus to avoid disappointing the fans, and continue its long trend of spearheading the sandbox genre.

So, does the current generation rendition of Liberty City meet demand? Have Rockstar truly outdone themselves, or has the series finally cracked under pressure? Join me for the full review after the jump.

Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developed by Rockstar North
Published by Rockstar Games
Released on April 29th, 2008

It's inconceivable that you don't know the story of GTA IV, but if you suffer from short-term memory loss, let's break it down. You take on the role of Eastern European immigrant Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat and in the "land of opportunity" that is Liberty City. He soon finds that his cousin Roman's stories of women and riches are embroidered at the very least, and it's only a matter of time before he settles into the only way of life a GTA character knows -- crime, and lots of it.

One of the most noteworthy aspects of Grand Theft Auto IV this time around is the storyline -- writers Dan Houser and Rupert Humphries have pulled out all the stops to create the most epic, engaging and above all, humanized Grand Theft Auto story of all. There is a depth here that far surpasses GTA III's callous silence, or Vice City's merciless tale of psychopath Tommy Vercetti. Niko Bellic is a fully fleshed out character, with a past, a goal, and some actual sympathy.

The game is full of moral dilemmas, with a variety of choices presented throughout that can affect your progression through Liberty City's criminal underworld. Some of the decisions you have to face can weigh heavily on the player, because unlike other games, there is a true sense of gray here -- no stark black-and-white as in other videogames that promise "moral choice." It has to be said that GTA IV presents more conflicting decisions than BioShock ever did, and you'll constantly be wondering if you made the right decision, and feeling the affects of your actions.

As far as gameplay goes, GTA IV doesn't do much to evolve the series beyond the roots established in the last generation. Although rich in detail and with plenty for Niko to do, the reinvented Liberty City is still the same old affair of running around a giant sandbox, completing missions for a variety of criminals and psychopaths, from assassinations to chases and street races. The combat is far from improved, with hand-to-hand fighting a complete waste of space and a dodgy auto-aim system for weapons that only lets you switch targets about 50% of the time. Despite the high ideals and efforts to push forward the sandbox genre, GTA IV is a game marred by outdated mechanics that really should have been improved by now.

That's not to say the game is unenjoyable -- far from it. Once you forgive the poor combat mechanics, there is a lot to love in Liberty City, as most of you reading will fully know by now. Cruising through the New York-inspired surroundings is a joy, and eventually you'll be having too much fun to care about the fact that cars now slide around like a piece of soap -- besides, you'll get used to that. The missions aren't overly complex this time around, but there are some utter doozies that will stick with you for a good long while, and plenty of optional sidequests that can be discovered. At its bare bones, Grand Theft Auto IV is really just like any other GTA, but if you happen to like GTA, this isn't a bad thing.

Fortunately, those bones aren't bare at all, and it's the extras that truly make IV stand out from the pack. The city is crammed full of things to do, and in between missions you'll find there is plenty to stop you from growing bored. You'll be able to engage in minigames like bowling, darts and QUB3D, go on dates with a variety of women, or just hang out with friends like Roman, Packie or the inimitable Brucie Kibbutz. You could also take in a show, with a cabaret club full of little skits for you to watch, or visit the Split Sides comedy club which features fully motion-captured acts from Catt Williams and Ricky Gervais.

Much of the game is handled through Niko's phone. You'll get calls from potential employers, or important text messages, and you can use it yourself to arrange dates/meetings, or open up missions earlier. Later in the game you'll be able to get even more benefits. The phone is also used to engage in multiplayer matches. While it's a good idea, I often found the phone a pain to use, especially trying to make an important call in a heated moment. You will also lose the conversation if you're hit by a car or a fist during a phone conversation, and if you're interested in the story, this could force you to miss out on some of the experience.

As far as the aforementioned multiplayer goes, Rockstar has certainly given the play a wide variety of options. From simple street races and deathmatches to more involved play modes like "Cops & Robbers," online aficionados will not find themselves growing bored easily. Personally I've experienced horrible lag from it but when I find it working, I must confess there's a lot of fun to be had. The unrefined gameplay actually makes multiplayer more fun, as skidding cars turn a street race into a chaotic mess of crashes that you probably have no hope of winning, but it doesn't matter because you're too busy smashing into other people.

I just wish, however, the multiplayer was far more intuitive. The only way to access it is through your mobile phone in single player, and you can't truly choose to access it any time because you lose any and all unsaved progress. This really makes the idea of a multiplayer that you can just drop in on at any time a rather moot one. Also, if you choose to leave a game, there's no real lobby to speak of, so you'll be thrown back into single player (after a good deal of loading, of course).

GTA IV is far from perfect, but is just so much fun that it barely matters. The Euphoria engine makes interacting with Liberty City's inhabitants hilarious (the first time one of them grabs the car you just stole is a moment of sheer joy) and the attention to detail is marvelous. A title that makes just watching an in-game television fun has to be worthy of praise, and the satire and wit that has been put into everything from the game's dialog to its plethora of radio stations (LRR has an ELO song on its playlist!) ensures that Grand Theft Auto IV is consistently entertaining.

As a game, it is flawed in many aspects, but as an immersing experience, GTA IV is simply unparalleled. Its problems cannot and should not be overlooked, but none of them break the game, and there is just so much charm packed into the thing that you can't stay mad for long. Sure, just clipping a police car and having it turn into a chase that takes you far away from your intended target is an abominable frustration, but soon, like a puppy that's just shit in your shoes, the game will do something completely adorable to make you put down your beating stick and take it out for a walk.

It's not a perfect game, but it's still one of the best damn rides you'll get from your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 this year.

Score: 8.0 (Great. Very fun -- its essential gameplay aspects are cool and interesting, but may not be implemented in the best way.)

Thank god you didn't give this game a 10/10 just because everyone else and their mother wants to be on the cool train with RockStar. The game is fun, well executed and has a lot to keep you going for quite some time, but it definitely has it's flaws as well.
Thanks again for giving an honest score and not falling off the 10/10 cliff like the other lemmings out there.

Good writeup, you touched on the acpects that are shakey and the ones that are great. I definatly agree on the score as well. I'm going through my second play through right now, doing things a little different to see what happens. I can play the game for hours and never get that bored with it, and for a sandbox game that says something. I'm trying to get through the second play through before MGS4 comes out.

Ofcourse it didn't get a 9 or 10 out of 10, otherwise it would be the same as other blog and gamesite and they can't have that ofcourse. It's funny, every review, doesn't matter what score, It's always the same "Good review", "Honest review", "Best review so far" etc.

I'd say an 8 is right on the money. It's a very good game, just shy of greatness. Unfortunately, since I'm not that into the multiplayer, I've put far less hours into IV than I did into San Andreas.

I've played the game and like the gameplay-- it's not great, but it's serviceable as a sandbox title. However, we can't deny that it's just ugly compared to other games, even compared to other open-world games. But my biggest beef is that if you go down the Metacritic page for this game, you'll see crap like "Oscar-caliber story" and "our Citizen Kane moment."

For one, once you get your second safehouse, Niko just starts doing random missions for people that really have no bearing on the game's conclusion. Rockstar shoved in a whole bunch of ancillary moments and characters to try and make the city more real, I guess, but it completely destroys any sense of a driving central narrative.

And second, there's no subtlety whatsoever. Every single cutscene, they hammer away at the fact that they're talking about the American Dream and how it's all a sham! Every "progressive" lefty talking point you could ever imagine is artificially and unintelligently pumped into the game. I can stand people tearing apart conservative ideas if they do it cleverly, but this is just like a bunch of middle-school kids half-remembering Jon Stewart quotes and dying of laughter as they repeat them at a sleepover. I find it most ironic that the message (again, done with zero subtlety) of "Oh, America isn't a place of opportunity for immigrants" has been written by Sam Houser, a British man who's now the executive producer for the biggest game franchise in the United States.

8/10 is perfect to me. In the first week this game was out I would have given it a 10/10 but now that I'm nearing the end I can see why a couple points should be knocked off.

My main complaint is actually something you didn't mention. Maybe it's just me but the missions towards the last 1/4 of the game are insanely tough. I find myself screaming and throwing my controller more often than not. Thank god I can always relax with a game of pool. Really though, the stressful missions could be alleviated quite easily if Rockstar had just implemented a Checkpoint system into the missions. I love the instant retrys via text message but they need to go a step further and introduce mission checkpoints. It is far to frustrating when you fail a long mission because of something unexpected right at the end.

glad someone else agrees with me. 8 is above average how is that a bad score? Oh wait because the gaming people review on a 7-10 system.... This is why game reviews need to be letter grades not numbers, theres so many 9-10s floating around. There is no such thing as a 10 game I'm sorry, so why is there so many 10s?

Popular opinion seems to make out GTA IV is a flawless masterpiece, with most reviews glossing over all of its many flaws.

Is that what you want? People reviewing the hype instead of the game? If that's the case feel free to jump back on the hype train and not come here any more.

Personally, I think the review could have further discussed more positive and negatives that aren't mentioned, but that's just me.

Excellent review, Jim. You brought up a lot of good points; there were just two things I disagree with a bit.

First I thought the combat was much better than previous GTA games, though I must admit I had a horrible time with the cover system. Also, I loved how the cars control - even though it took a while to get used to.

Aside from that you bring up several key flaws that many reviews seemed to skim over. But despite it's flaws, GTAIV is still a 10/10 in my book just because I've enjoyed the game so damn much.

Wow! Really fantastic review Jim!

I have not played it yet, but it saddens me that the car mechanics have actually gotten worse. I remember from San Andreas, even though i haven't played it much since the 3rd month after i got it, that the driving was just such a great feeling in the game, not to mention the radio stations, etc..

thankyou!

I do not disagree with that score at all. Well written, too bad most people who were on the fence about this game probably already made their decision. Good review is good.

Also "You will also lose the conversation if you're hit by a car or a fist during a phone conversation"

SO HALO 3 IS BETTER THAN GTA IV?

Depends on the type of score Jim would give GTA IV (since once reviewer is not all of Destructoid), but Halo scored high with that reviewer for it's multiplayer capabilities, which is not the same with GTA IV.

I'm not on the hype train Timmeh and I don't want to read reviews that pander to the hype either. I just think D'toid tries too hard to go the other way like it wants to be the edgy, misunderstood,, attitude having "Sonic The Hedgehog" of videogame sites.

I, personally, think the game is a 10 if only for the fact it has embarrassed nearly every other recent game with it's depth, attention to detail, consistency and quality. Okay, it's not perfect but fuck me son, it's a game.

Everyone I know (and respect the opinion of) has utterly fallen in love with Liberty City, Niko, the controls, euphoria, the vehicle handling, the humour, everything.

If that makes me hypeboy then suck my balls, at least I'm not a cunt.

The game is nothing near a ten. It does nothing to advance the medium of games, and it really does nothing different from past GTAs. It's just got a lot of hype behind it, and every game journalist in the world inflated its score either to a) get exclusive coverage or b) legitimize games as an art form to outsiders. Problem is, there are far better titles to use as examples of games as art; it's just GTA IV is a high-profile game outside of the gaming community, so the gaming press has picked it up as a banner title.

Finally someone gives a realistic review. 10 10 10 10 was boloney. 8 fits it perfectly. Has plenty of issues (graphics can suck or be awesome, camera fights you constantly, auto lock can be troublesome...and on and on and on) I could go on for hours about the games faults... However, the attention to details of the game, the massive environments, and the ability to have a new experience every time you do a mission again, etc, make this a definite must have. Perfect? No, not even close. But despite its shortcomings it is one of the best games I have played in a very very long time.
Thank you Jim, for taking the time to do a great review and not just suck the games cock with a 10 like everyone else.

I don't really care about the numerical score one way or another, but my only criticism is that the game should be given the "Editor's Choice" award.

Even though it may have its flaws, everyone owes it to themselves to experience Liberty City, it is quite the experience.

Also, anyone think that the map / cellphone in the bottom corners of the screen are way to small and hard to read? In multi player (especially if I have a wanted level) I can basically never see where my friends dot is. And I have a professionally calibrated 55 inch bravia 1080p 120hz set. Jesus, if I cant see / read it what are the sorry saps with smaller sets doing, standing 1 foot away from the screen?

Further, I felt like the game girlfriended me too much. I could maybe remain interested in 1 woman. But putting up with 2 nagging women along with pouty friends was a bit much. Sorry but I dont play video games to get bitched at when I cant hang out with someone. I get enough of that in real life. Maybe if the special abilities friends give you when past a certain percentige STAYED after you acheived it, it would be worth it...But as it is their tallents are all but worthless and not worth keeping the relationship at a happy 75+%.

I hate the social implications of cell phones in real life. Rockstar drug it too far into my video game life. Not that it wasnt a cool immersive effect at first but hell....

lubczyk did a good job of pointing out alot of frustrating flaws. I had the same problem with the game being too dark at night. I couldnt see where I was going!

I really got bored with this game after a couple hours into it. I kept thinking about how much fun I had playing Saints Row and how i wished it was more like that. I know they are very different games, but I thought SR was actually fun.

In GTA4 the cars slide all over the place when driving and combat pretty much sucks. So if both of those are bad what do you have to look forward to? Sure theres alot of other stuff to do but not of it kept me entertained. I dont understand why people are so willing to forgive the games flaws.

Also I thought the graphics for the characters was pretty bad. Their faces looked like they were made of clay, the lip syncing was off and their animations looked really stiff. I was pretty disapointed. Anyone else think so?

Not that I have a problem or complaint with this review, it's spot on with what I've been hearing about GTA4. I hope they fix this shit by the time the PC port comes around. For the other three 3d GTAs they made improvements like having cars not disappear when you turn your back on them, and graphical overhauls, so my hopes are up.

Back in the day of the old games i would defiantely have completed the main story, but as i'm relatively new to Xbox Live (since Halo 3 came out) it has completely changed the reason i play and now buy games, But i guess thats a different subject altogether.
