I really, really hate doing header text for reviews, and Eternity's Child isn't making my job any easier. Where do you start? Talking about the game's complex history over many potential platforms? Talk about the game's creator, Luc Bernard, whose skill at self-promotion has put his work firmly in the public eye for one reason or another? How the game fits in amongst indie gaming in general?

I suppose by writing out which of those things I could use as an intro, I've essentially used them all. Thus, I consider my job done as far as writing pre-jump text goes.

All you need to know before hitting the jump is this: the game is Eternity's Child, and the reviewers are myself and Conrad Zimmerman. And even though Mr. Destructoid is in the game, that doesn't mean we're going to go easy on it.

Eternity's Child (WiiWare, Steam [reviewed])
Developed by Luc Bernard and Silver Sphere Studios
Published by Altern8

Released on July 31, 2008 on Steam; WiiWare release date forthcoming

Before we begin, I need to make one thing absolutely clear: I do not enjoy bashing games. I'm not one of those guys who takes great pleasure in coming up with profane puns to mock the title of a game I hate, and I take no glee in ripping something to shreds -- especially if that game is created by a very small team of people, working for little to no cash.

Even with that in mind, however, I have to say this: Eternity's Child is the worst game I've played in several years.

Let's start with the most superficial, and work upward. The graphics, one might think, look great: Bernard's drawings feel sort of like Tim Burton mixed with someone who isn't as breathtakingly pretentious or gloomy as Tim Burton, and, in screenshots, the game looks awfully beautiful.

Unfortunately, the graphics only look good in screenshots. In motion, the game looks as good as, if not worse than, most flash games you might find on Newgrounds. The character animations are incredibly stiff: the sprites glide across the screen with the absolute minimum amount of personal animation required to show that they are, in fact, walking and not just magically floating from place to place.

erere

Next, story. There is one, and I'm sure it's interesting, but it's delivered in the most boring way possible: through a several-minute-long, text-only prologue which explains, in detail, the characters, the world, the villains, and the plot. It's a clunky, inefficient, and just plain lazy way of delivering story to the player: why not interweave the story with the gameplay in some way -- in any way? Unless you feel like memorizing a bunch of proper nouns and abstract plot points the game throws at you in its first five minutes, then the story of Eternity's Child will be irrelevant at best, and nonexistent at worst.

But let's forget the story, and talk about gameplay.

Let's talk about level design, or the complete lack of it on display in Eternity's Child. How the player is given essentially no direction as to where to go, but to move randomly eastward, hoping to bump into something of importance while making blind leaps of faith, praying to land on something to show that they're on the right track.

Let's talk about how the jump button only responds to your input about a third of  the time, leading you to fall to your doom for no good reason.

Or that the player must kill every single flying enemy they see, because even if they manage to temporarily run away from them -- even if they run all the way to the opposite side of the level -- the enemies will eternally chase them, so that five minutes after escaping a horde of Evil Flying Robotic Heart Things, you rest for just a moment and, from out of nowhere, the Evil Flying Robotic Heart Things you'd forgotten about come from offscreen and kill you. The only way to survive any encounter with the enemies in the game is to shoot every last goddamn one you come across, unless you feel like being ambushed after you've assumedly gotten out of harm's way.

Additionally, the jump button only works a third of the time.

erere

And speaking of combat, the shooting mechanics just don't feel right. I find it hard to verbalize, but the projectile combat is just poorly paced all around: since your bullets can collide with the bullets of your enemies, and since your enemies fire a lot of bullets, and since the enemies take a lot of damage to kill, and since you can't dodge these bullets since the jumping mechanics are horrendous, your only recourse is to stand more or less still while firing an unending stream of your own bullets at the enemy, waiting patiently as your bullets slowly knock away each one of the enemy's dozens of bullets until finally reaching the enemy himself and eventually destroying him after a few shots. You can't really understand just how underwhelming and slow the combat is until you play the game -- something which I would strongly recommend against doing in the first place.

Roughly 66% of the times you hit the jump button, your character won't do anything.

To summarize: the graphics are bad, the story is irrelevant, the level design is horrendous, the shooting is sloppy and the platforming mechanics are even worse. Yeah, there's a level editor, but saying the level editor makes the game better is like giving someone a crudely-drawn picture of a penis along with a pencil, and saying the pencil makes the picture itself better because you could hypothetically improve it.

There is nothing good about this game.

Score: 1.0

Conrad Zimmerman

We've observed Eternity's Child for a long time now and had an intimate connection with it. Now it's out and I'm left scratching my head, wondering what went wrong. If you've ever had a family member that's a few years younger than you, someone you've watched grow up and care about, only to discover that they've become utterly insufferable as an adult, you'll understand where I'm coming from here.

Luc Bernard's artwork is beautiful. The backgrounds alone are breathtaking and I could easily lose myself staring at them. The characters and enemies are equally attractive. It all goes wrong once they start to move. Suddenly, they become paper dolls being danced around a kitchen table by an eight year-old. Watching these gorgeous, detailed characters flop around in the environment with stale, rigid and lifeless animation pained my heart.

erere

We were warned that the game would be hard and it is. The problem is that it's difficult for the wrong reasons, most directly in terms of control.

In general, the controls are more loose than a five dollar hooker the morning after shore leave ends. Your character defaults to their running speed and you have to use a separate key to slow him down. If you want to walk to maintain control, you have to keep this key held down, which is really inconvenient when you have to keep one hand on the mouse. Not that it matters much, since you won't be able to clear most of the jumps without going at top speed and you'll probably just wind up struggling in a stop-start motion to make sure that you don't overshoot instead of bothering with it.

Shooting works better, if that says anything. The mouse cursor determines the targeting of your fire while the left and right mouse buttons produce rapid-fire and a charge shot, respectively. The charged shot is interesting because you can catch it with the cursor and then direct it around the screen to kill enemies. It's a cool idea that utterly fails in execution due to how precisely the cursor must be placed. And, since everything in the environment can collide with your ball and set it off course (and away from your already tenuous grip), trying to use this ability is frustrating at the best of times.

t
Where stages are concerned, I found them to be surprisingly well-designed. Big and complicated, there are often multiple paths to be taken and you'll occasionally be forced to do a little problem solving to get past a seemingly impossible distance or grouping of enemies. Unfortunately, other design choices ruin what is an otherwise decent effort. As pretty and detailed as the art elements are, they take up a lot of real estate on the screen. Consequently, it's impossible to see far enough to determine where many platforms are and you'll often blindly jump in the hopes that solid ground may appear beneath your feet.

Other technical issues abound. The game crashes on menu screens from time to time. It did not support my joystick (or those of other people I've spoken to about it) despite having the option available. Sometimes it just doesn't want to load the first level. (NOTE: A patch has been released since the time of writing, which may or may not fix these problems.)

When all is said and done, this is a horrible excuse for a commercial release. Nothing could possibly redeem the full product, but there is one positive that I can lend to this review: the soundtrack is excellent. It is too good for this. The best experience you can possibly have with Eternity's Child is to look at screenshots and listen to the score. And, at around nine and a half minutes, this activity would be enjoyable for a longer period of time.

Whatever you do, don't buy this game. In fact, don't even say its name, for that might give its already unholy form power.

Score: 1.0

Final Verdict: 1.0 (Practically unplayable. An exercise in absolute madness.)

I was going to comment about how I've spent some time with the new patch, and it fixes almost all of the control problems that I experienced while playing the game yesterday. But I think it's a lot cause at this point.

If there's anyone who still cares, the jumping bug is gone completely and the controls feel much more accurate.

I also might be imagining it, but it also seems like Angel jumps higher now too. This makes a lot of jumps less frustrating. Especially the ones that required extreme accuracy before the patch (Level 3 has quite a few of these).

i really doubt if someone had read my other Post THIS GAME DOESN'T SUCK!, Just take Butmac, he says "i haven't played the game and i know it sucks" Why? Because trying to looks as tougher as you can be seems to be cool here on Dtoid.. PLAY THE GAME AND THEN COMPLAIN! The game is fine, the updat fixed almostr every issue i found and i'm playing it as a nice 2D platformer. I know, very well that when the demo is released every one will swallow their words.

Read my other POsts Luc if you want, i liked your game and i support you entirely

And Reaprar, STFU, really, i know it's your personal trademark to shit everything you don't approve, but that was funny like 5 months ago..

I said "what the hell," and dropped the $5 on the game. Honestly? I kind of like it. The music is great, I personally think the game loos great as well.

Controls Seemed fairly responsive, but I've been spoiled by controllers, and can't stand using the keyboard and mouse combo for a platform game. It's probably more of an issue on my side than Luc's but it is really giving me a fit. Jump seems to work OK for me.

If Luc and his programmer(s) can work out a way to use a controller with this thing, I could see myself playing all the way through it --- and liking it. *GASP*

Hell, I want to try the demo now.

@Luc: Like a lot of people have said so far, not all of these posts are flame bait, and have honest criticisms. Take it and make the appropriate improvements. Just please don't become the next Lair and pass the buck off on other people (or, in Lair's case, ghosts). Man up and take charge of your project. If it's not progressing the way you think it should, delay the game. Patching the hell out of it afterwards only goes so far; people remember the first impression.

That being said, his reaction to the general "FUCK YOU!!!11elevens!!" is understandable. This almost like the pot calling the kettle black.

Also, ill take the opportunity to say: youre a dick. A complete asshole. But, youre never not an asshole, so it kind of works. Youre funny too, so keep it up.

The art style of the game caught my eye on the steam news update, I came here looking for a review to see if it was worth buying. While the reviews had me shying away from this relatively cheap purchase the developers comments sealed the deal. I realize this is "indie" gaming and all but I expect some level of professionalism from someone who wants me to purchase their product. It seems rather odd to me that a demo is being released after it's already gone on sale, it speaks of poor planning. As another poster mentioned small problems are to be expected with PC games, but to have core mechanics fail to function is pretty bad. I'm aware that has been fixed now but it seems like what you've released is a beta product. I'm sure most, if not all, the issues mentioned here will be hammered out overtime, but it seems most of them could have been avoided by some simple/quick play-testing.

I'm not judging your game here, I'm judging your business practices. My opinion of you is also extremely low seeing your comment about being drunk and trying to excuse your behavior with inebriation. Tack on to that your harshly (for a middle schooler) worded attack on the commenter "Reaprar". None of it seems like something I'd like to support with my gaming dollar. When it becomes available I'll take a look at your demo, but until you start looking like a legitimate game designer and not a petulant child upset that their work isn't receiving the praise they think it should I can assure you I won't be purchasing a copy of Eternity's Child even if it manages to astound and amaze me.

As other commenters have mentioned I think the best course of action you could consider at this point is to back away from your keyboard until you calm down and start apologizing. That said, I have to admit there's a part of me that's delighting in the schadenfreude of this whole affair.

Luc Bernard: You need to shut the fuck up. First your game concepts have pretentious twat written all over them. Your art is rendered adequately enough but the design is almost universally horrible. The sort of pretentious twattery that pretentious twats pass off as "art" (the kind they reckon makes them superior to everyone else in the world) while appearing to have been conceived by the retarded child of siblings who has had his brain bashed in with a lead pipe.

I'd jump in with everyone telling you to fuck yourself and then advise you to shut the fuck up, but there's so much more justice in a twat like yourself digging your own grave and lying in it. So which should we put on the tombstone, Jeff Dyack or Denis Minter?

Even if his game was bad, I feel sorry for him because he had the guts to leave himself open to this crap that D/Toiders are putting down. He shared his ideas, gave us the screens and allowed a review.

Well, I don't feel sorry for him.

No matter what, in the end, you have to deliver a passable product, and he has been widely criticized for a while about the initial gameplay footage he released. His reaction? Get rid of the gameplay footage, be very defensive, and even go so far as to switch platforms (apparently, targeting a different audience, and avoiding the fact that the 360 requires a demo to be released).

I just read every reply to this shitstorm hahaha, how entertaining.

note: I always believed in you Reaprar you fucking asshole <3

Pretty much Luc has done nothing but dig his grave deeper with his immature replies. No amount of "sheeptoid" posts can ever top his emo douchefagry.

TIMELINE:

It's the build of the game that's the problem

It's the fact that the game didn't support a fucking game controller that's the problem

It's his programmer that's the problem, because Luc "did his part fine"

(this is where he insults everyone, saying that it makes them feel good "sitting behind their PC's insulting people")

Then it's the fact that we didn't discuss/debate the game, even though in his first post he stated clearly he didn't want to

THEN he insults Conrad, calling in to question his professionalism as a reviwer stating "I guess this is not your full time job is it?"

Seriously Luc, you are being the BIGGEST baby about this. I've been doing design work for the last 6 years and I have to deal with people telling me they don't like my stuff all the time. If someone doesn't like it, there is more than likely a logical reason behind it, and it's your job as a designer to take criticism, apply it to your methods and learn from your faults!

It isn't just you, it's every person on the planet. We all make mistakes, but the only way to ensure they don't happen again is to LEARN from them! Not to pretend they didn't happen.

Doesn't it make you feel great to know that Conrad and Rev Anthony respected you and your game enough to offer an in depth and critical review for you to reference?

*shrugs*

You can go on bawwwwing all you like about how everyone on here is a sheep, or how the game is actually good. But nothing will negate your horrible posts, insulting members on here as well as the general community.

@Sharpless

For this summary, I <3 you.

I just read through almost 300 comments to get here and give my piece of mind.

@Luc

I support you in your work, but please stop being so willingly ignorant to what is happening here. All of your comments are condemning the D-toid community when it reality, only about a quarter of the comments here are sheer negativity. General consensus is that we want you to truly listen to what people are saying about the flaws in the game, because we like your ideas and art direction. The only reason I'm actually kind of pissed at you is that you seemed to be ignoring the fact that most of the community here is supporting you as a developer. I personally (though again, I haven't played the game at all) think this game looks beautiful and if you can manage to fix the problems that people are complaining about, I'll end up buying it on Wii.

Don't you see? People want you to fix the game because they want to buy it. You should be happy that instead of most of the people here saying "This is a piece of shit and I would never buy it," they're saying things like "With the patch, I really enjoyed this game" or "If you can fix issues in the game, I'll definitely buy it for Wii."

Be a man, take the criticism, and make sure to really wow us next time.

ok, apart from the fact that I think bashing Luc that way was stupid, I'm glad to see that in the end he and the Dtoid reviewers are going to talk about it and try to do what they can to make EC a better game. I have not tried it, I'm still looking forward to it when it'll be released on Wiiware and to Luc I can understand how you feel, it's difficult to remain calm when people bash you and most of all bash something you put so much time and effort into. Let's just take this opportunity to underline the flaws and fix them, and next time let websites do some previews so this bugfix operation can be done in a more relaxed way.
Good luck!
To the reviewers: I'm sure you are honest and that the flaws are there. Of course, a score that low is really harsh but I'm sure you guys do a good job for us the readers. The best thing that can happen is you talk witht he developer to make thing better and since it seems it's what you're doing now I hope the future of the game will be brighter.
To everyone who jumped on the "blind bashing" bandwagon: get a life. There are many other things more interesting and way more mature to do with your time.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
