Destructoid review: Devil May Cry 4

Destructoid review: Devil May Cry 4 photo
     Xbox 360

You always know where you are with a franchise like Devil May Cry. The formula has remained unchanged since the original PlayStation 2 title, and the game has stubbornly refused to change. Even in this age of forced "innovation," main hero Dante religiously sticks to his guns (and swords), offering the same brand of hardcore action and cheesey quips.

Devil May Cry is a simple game, but one that provides extraordinary challenge and a sense of character that drips in self-aware stupidity. With Devil May Cry 4, Capcom has decided to break no walls down in its typical serving of devil-killing gameplay. Outside of minor tweaks and a few fresh ideas, this is DMC through-and-through, and makes no apologies for it.

But is that a good thing? A bad thing? A thing that is not either of those things but a thing that is another thing? Did that sentence make sense? Hit the jump to find out (except for that last bit).

Devil May Cry 4 (PS3, Xbox 360 [Reviewed])
Developed/Published by Capcom
Released on February 5, 2008

Devil May Cry 4 has decided to go to the Zelda school of timelines, as the fourth chapter chronologically takes place after the third and first games, but before the second game. Not that it matters, because DMC is not a series that requires you to keep score at home. The basic premise revolves around new character Nero, knight of a holy order that has taken to worshipping Sparda (Dante's demonic father) as a messiah. However, things take a turn for the violent when Dante shows up and executes the cult's leader in front of everybdy, Nero included.

You are then thrust into the role of Nero, as he tracks down the Son of Sparda to bring him to justice. Cue the usual slew of vocal effect-laden demons, nonsensical cutscenes and deliciously bad dialog. As with previous titles, DMC4 plants its tongue in its cheek, and provides nothing but silliness from beginning to end. Nero and Dante taunt their foes with graceless one-liners and try so hard be cool that they look anything but. Taken as a parody of action games, DMC4 wins. Some might take issue with how badly written it is, but I'll say that if you go into a Devil May Cry game for top-notch storytelling, you may as well eat cakes and expect the rich taste of beef.

Devil May Cry 4 is all about the gameplay, and this is where it shines. In essence, the game remains unchanged since the original, as Nero moves, fights, and even looks like Dante. Armed with a sword called The Red Queen, and his trusty revolver, The Blue Rose, Nero is the spitting image of his would-be enemy, and you essentially do what he does -- perform simple combos that are amazingly intuitive but look fantastic, rack up stylish points by using a varied moveset, and trade in souls for powerups and items.

Where Nero does differ from Dante, however, is with The Devil Bringer. With a simple button press, Nero is able to perform brutally effective grabs on foes, and slam them into the ground, spin them around his head, or toss them into the distance. Furthermore, there is a very effective new trick, in which Nero locks onto a foe and throws out an extension of power to ensnare an enemy and draw them in close. The move is crucial for keeping one's combo count going, and is as simple to use as it is delightfully addictive.

The Devil Bringer feels like a huge change to combat, and it is, but under the surface this is indeed the same Devil May Cry, and some fans may be turned off by just how little it tries to break the mold. Everything you love or hate about previous games is to be found here and with the good invariably comes the bad. The camera lacks any elegance and remains mostly fixed, leading to confusion with every change of perspective. Those moments where the camera is free-moving are infrequent and often restricted. Sometimes there are precise jumps needed, and the bad camera (mixed with Nero's over-exuberant jumping) make these moments incredibly frustrating. It's a survival horror viewpoint in a pure action game, and it should have been phased out in the original title, let alone the fourth one.

Also making an unwelcome return are pointless non-quests and "puzzles," that amount to little more than annoying time wasting. An early mission where you have to move heavy rotating statues around a castle by punching them gets very old very fast, and it's the first of several moments that bore more than exhilarate. On the subject of time wasting, there is also ceaseless backtracking. Many missions require you to go back and forth in the same old areas, and when you get to play as Dante, you'll be playing through most of the levels you'd just played as Nero. It smacks of laziness and for a game that has been in the works since before the current generation even got off the ground, I expect better. One can't help but feel that Capcom did what it could to pad the title out, stuffing it with very little substance just to meet a length quota. This game has had years of development -- it deserves more.

Since we mentioned Dante, it is true that at the halfway point of the game, you will get to play as the legendary Son of Sparda himself and to be honest, I wish you didn't. You spend the entire first half thinking about how awesome it'll be to finally get your hands on Dante again, only to find out that without the Devil Bringer, he is nowhere near as effective or fun as the character you just lost. He does have his four fighting styles from Dante's Awakening, but they don't do enough to make up for Nero's awesomeness. Make no mistake, this is no Raiden/Snake situation -- in DMC4, the new character really is superior. That said, Dante eventually gets his hands on all sorts of exclusive weaponry to make up for it. While he has no Devil Bringer, one can't fault the Gilgamesh, a set of gauntlets and boots that are devastatingly powerful, or the Lucifer, which suspends exploding spikes in mid-air and just looks amazing.

There are a few letdowns in DMC4, and the game doesn't live up to its potential. Reviewing a game based upon what it isn't as opposed to what it is, however, is unfair, and even with the negatives, Devil May Cry 4 is a solid, addictive, hardcore action game that should satisfy all but the most demanding of hardcore combat fans. It looks sexy as hell, has great music, and packs in some truly laugh-out-loud funny moments -- provided you actually get with the dumb humor of the cutscenes. It's a good game -- not a great one, but very, very good all the same. It'll put up stiff resistance in portions, but the challenge is more forgiving than prior titles, and if you want to ramp things up a notch, you can unlock further difficulty settings. Despite the padding, there's plenty to do, and it should ultimately send the fans home happy. You can't ask much more than that.

Score: 7.5

Will someone who just picks up the game without playing the other 3 be able to understand the story?

While the DMC games have been fun in the past (granted, I never touched two), and the demo on XBL was pretty entertaining (agreed, the Devil Bringer is a nice welcomed addition), it DID just feel like its' predecessors before it.

In no way is that a bad thing, it's just something that's stale. While pretty as hell, DMC4 did have that 'been there, done that' feel to it.

Last week I had the chance to pick this up, or No More Heroes. I think it's obvious what I ended up purchases. To me, DMC4 seems like a buy when it's discounted/a definite rental.

But nice review Jim, very insightful.

I just finished it and loved almost all of it (minus the platforming bits). Then again I was a huge fan of the past games in the series, so maybe my opinion is a little biased. And by a little I mean a lot. For what it's worth I actually ended up liking Dante better once he had all of his new weapons. Diff'rent strokes I guess!

Christiangamer: A badger can understand the story of any given DMC game. You'll do just fine without knowing the other stuff. It's pretty self-contained. Only thing you'll miss is the "oh wow I recognize that character" factor that happens all of maybe three times.

Yeah, this is what I’d pretty much heard from other media outlets...but to be honest, even if I did have the money to buy this game right now (which I don’t), I wouldn’t do so because of my massive backlog of PS3 and PS2 games. Great review as always, Jim!

So then... If there's no missing story parts from the earlier games, and one of the biggest complaints is that it's just as fun as DMC3, but doesn't really add anything to the experience, would you recommend picking it up if your only experience with the DMC series is a few hours playing DMC3 at a friends house?

Either way, I'll probably end up renting it. I just don't see enough content in it to warrant 60 bucks when I could play through all the main content within a rental period.

The difficulty is the same as DMC 3. It's only hard on Dante Must Die mode and higher.

Also,
First I whip it out!
Then I thrust it!
With great force!
Every angle!
It penetrates!
Until!
With great strength!
I ram it in!
In the end...
We are all satisfied....

I have one small qualm. I think Nero is simply easier to use. Not to put down anyone's skills, but Dante when used properly, is obviously more powerful than Nero, but takes more effort to do so with. You'll know this when you reach the first boss and realize you've done a combo that results in the large plant dragon lady losing half of her life bar, and you, playing the powerful Dante have yet to break a sweat. Nero is great because he offers a simpler DMC lite, with no weapon or style switching, and nothing more complicated than his exceed meter, all of which can be very effective. Dante is for those crazy people with no life (like myself) who are willing to put forth the effort to put together strangely ridiculous and powerful combos using Dante's various styles and weapons.

Even the seemingly impossible secret missions are easy once you figure the gimmick for them.
(SPOILERS)

Non-violent resistance= Use the Aegis Shield, taunts and dodges.

Save the puppet from the Chimaeras=Use the Aegis Shield to pick it up and carry it away from them. Then turn and massacre them for the frustration before you figured it out.

The disappearing platforms=Just kill the Mestiphos for solid ground, then use the Pandora missile platform and fly to your destination.

@big filth

That is correct, you can only load a mission and start from the beginning. However you do keep any red souls and pride souls you earn during a mission when you quit, retry or restart a mission.

I'm renting DMC4, and played through DMC3.

I don't know what it is about the series, but I just love how fucking over-the-top everything is. The dialogue, story, characters, setting, etc. just baffles me.

Yet its also what I love about the series, I just let it play like some crazy scenario I might have imagined as a cracked-out child.

So far I really like the presentation of DMC4, and I'm digging Nero, but I'm a little nervous to play Dante because its been awhile.

Overall DMC just makes me feel like a total badass, and as long as it doesn't falter in delivering that I'm 100% satisfied.

Srsly, the devil bringer is a true plus to the twitch combat style that is DMC4. it solves the problem of DMC2 (enemies too far away) and DMC3 (arenas are too cramped for my taste and it feels like they tried tooo hard to make up for DMC2). Definite buy.

Never played DMC? Give it a try. Love DMC? Give it a try. Simple as that.

I bought it and I like it alot. I was never really a HUGE fan of the series. I liked the original, 2 was meh and 3 was good too but something about it just didn't grab me. But I like this one alot, maybe since it feels a bit different considering you don't start off as Dante? Who knows, one thing's for sure though, I don't feel like I wasted my money! :D

Ontop of that, I thought fighting Dante was fun as hell.

I just beat it today, really, really fun game, I agree on Nero being superior, I find to be a lot more versatile than Dante and while Dante does get more things, I can't say its anything special, Lucifer is nice but not that good, Gilgamesh is Beowulf with a new name and Pandora needs a high level Gunslinger to bring out its full potential.

That and Dante is practically a cut and paste from DMC3, I do like his new personality though, much better than drunken frat boy Dante from DMC3. I also liked how the difficulties have re-tooled into to be like DMC1, they where just annoying in DMC3 with the DTing enemies and minimal changes other than enemies that took a 1,000 slashes to kill.

It's hard to imagine a way a weapon could be more over the top than Pandora. Seriously, I laughed for about a minute straight when I busted out the laser cannon form for the first time. On a scarecrow.

Also, one of the coolest moments of the game has to be when Devil-Triggered Nero whips out the Final Atomic Buster on an Alto Angelo.

Nero is more versatile than Dante, but in my eyes if you know what you're doing Dante is more powerful. Besides, the new weapons are just badass, and I'd rather use them than the demon arm!

It seems to me like Capcom introduced the arm to simplify things a bit, for the people who'd find Dante's styles hard to handle. (On that note, where's my quicksilver, bitches?!) I've seen other forum threads moaning about [minor spoiler incoming] fighting bosses 3 times but I think that's invalid - you should be used to it by now, happens in all the DMC games. Besides, I like it, getting to go back and knowing exactly how to kick their asses - it's a measure of your skill and survivability!

The only thing that did piss me off about the game was the stupid game room game. With the dice. If someone knows any way of making it non-random, please please please please tell me. Enough of the econstant fighting already!

To clarify, by "new weapons" I mean Dante's new weapons. Lucifer may not be the most efficient (haven't used it properly yet) but it sure is badass. Been waiting since DMC 1 to do Vergil's floating sword thing! (No, I didn't buy DMC3 SE, get over it)
