Destructoid review: Constrictor

6:00 PM on 02.12.2009 // Jim Sterling

[Editors's note -- I have new recording equipment so all video reviews after today will sound much sexier. Keep helping us to improve our videos by providing feedback though!

Another day, another Snake clone. Yes, hot off the heels of Snake 360, we have yet another game based on the classic Nokia timewaster that has found its way into our Community Games review challenge.

So far I have written two sentences and I am already at a loss for things to say about it. You might as well just watch the video review and skip the text this time, but nevertheless, let's get cracking with the Destructoid review of Constrictor.

Constrictor (Xbox 360 Community Games)
Developer: Osiris
Publisher: Osiris

So, as we've already established, Constrictor is a videogame based on Snake, the famous mobile phone game that nearly all of you have played before. The concept is very simple. You guide a snake around a map so it can eat dots, making sure not to smash into your own ever-lengthening body. Incredibly simple stuff.

Where Constrictor ups the stakes is in its aesthetic. While nearly all versions of Snake choose to represent the titular serpent as little more than an angling line, the snakes of Constrictor actually look like, of all things, snakes. Instead of harsh turning angles, these snakes snake around when snaking on the snake board in a snakelike manner.

The board is viewed from a slanted perspective, helping to further distance the game from fellow clones, and the graphics are rather funky and give something of a Geometry Wars vibe. As far as these types of titles go, Constrictor is definitely one of the best looking.

Gameplay differences are a little less striking, but Constrictor does offer a number of power ups to keep things interesting. Certain colored targets can bestow new powers upon your snake, such as invincibility, increased speed, or significant growth/shrinkage. Constrictor also allows for up to four local players, and they share the board at once, which adds extra danger to those who aren't fans of smashing into things and exploding.

It possesses a distinct visual charm, and the extra additions make it stand above other Snake clones, but it is just Snake at heart, and a game that you really don't even have to buy to get the full enjoyment of. While definitely worth a little download for fans of such games, you'll be hard pressed to justify a purchase. It's a decent little title, but definitely no keeper.

Score: 6.0 -- Alright (6s may be slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy them a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.)

Recently watched the Cannon Films documentary, by the director of Not Quite Hollywood. Super entertaining, hilarious, and it almost made me want to watch some of the Cannon films. Almost.

Tip for those who have plasma TVs and are playing MGSV; go into settings and make the weapon icon only appears when you're aiming. I had to buy a new TV because the weapon icon got permanently burned into my plasma.

I was excited to learn one of my favorite Philip K. Dick novels, The Man in the High Castle, would be receiving its own TV show. After watching the pilot, I'm cautiously optimistic. Looking forward to the rest in November.

I'm going to be honest; this is my new favourite line in anything ever. GOTY 2015 and all that. Also cocks: [img][/img]
I thought Laura Kate's Destiny piece for Polygon was pretty neat.

Bungie have decided Kojima isn't the only one who can do 4th wall breaking shenanigans. Congratulations Destiny players, you're all now The Taken King.
I have (jokingly) wanted a remake/sequel to Geist. And then I went to YouTube to watch a longplay to see it in action again and thought, "nevermind!"

I'd been worried that Jim had been losing his sanity with all the Steam sludge he's always attacking. If you've been feeling the same way, good news. His new vid warmed that void and reminded me that I follow him because he had no sanity to start with. ;)

I went from listening to the soundtrack of SMT IV, to the soundtrack to Mario Kart 8, Smash 4, Fire Emblem, and now chilling with some Mother 3. All of it was pretty awesome by the way.

After the 11th, I'm going into cryosleep until SMT IV Final is out. I'm sure Mike, Occams and Strider can manage without me. [img][/img]

In need of another writer for my monthly blog on the PS Plus games. Given how nobody really reviews all of them (and after spending time downloading bad ones), I thought it'd be a nice time to try and do it for the PS users out there. So... Need some help
