Destructoid joins PIPA/SOPA Blackout Protest on 18th photo

When your kids say "Where were you when the government made the internet lame?" you'll hopefully respond with unflinching certainty: "raising hell."

On January 18th members of the House Committee will be discussing PIPA/SOPA in Washington, D.C. and, like many of our friends, Destructoid will be blacking-out in protest of legislation that would allow DNS and Search Engine Blocking. If you think this blog post is annoying and not about videogames, wait until you can't reach our site at all because you won't have the power to decide what websites you can and cannot reach.

Check out the ECA for more info on what gamers can do to fight back.  I'm particularly disappointed in these guys.

@Chongomaster: You will probably get a message similar to the picture above when you try to access Dtoid. Twitter, Facebook and pretty much all the most important sites in the world will be doing the same/similar. I'm glad Dtoid is joining in.

Quoting Ben Kuchera's Twitter: "Most legislators can't turn on a computer, do we really think they care..."

I understand and support the need for more education about SOPA and PIPA, but how does blacking out a site for enthusiasts, who are overwhelmingly vocal about their disapproval, really that helpful to the cause?

I have to admit, I didn't have a sense of how serious the SOPA thing is until sites started announcing blackouts. So good job on that, Chief.

Also @ Rammstein - Um, I don't think Facebook is joining in on this. As far as Twitter I haven't checked because I never use it. Reddit is though, which is pretty big.

Without wanting to sound too much like a dick, what exactly does not publishing a video game blog which has vehemently inspired its readers to oppose SOPA aim to achieve by taking down a website which vehemently opposes SOPA and has already won over its audience to said claim?

You are inconveniencing the wrong people.

"I understand and support the need for more education about SOPA and PIPA, but how does blacking out a site for enthusiasts, who are overwhelmingly vocal about their disapproval, really that helpful to the cause?"

its a broad move to drive home a point. For those enthusiast, if they didn't get the point that this is kind of a big deal, they'll maybe start to really get it on the 18th. Maybe some of those enthusiast will ask their clueless parents about why they can't get to their favorite sites, then they'll be tipped off to what's happening. And maybe some savvy and vocal legislator will get the point on the 18th, and maybe make a change.

Way to go guys. I endorse this and any deluge of ads you may or may not need to schedule to cover the day. Rock on!

The more the merrier!

This slowly growing public protest on the 18th is a great way to inconvenience people—and I mean all people—as it will also affect the ignorant. This bill is too important to allow it to go unnoticed.

My sister can't read an ad pop-up properly before blindly clicking "yes" to agree to terms & conditions. She's indifferent, and the Internet is just a 'thing' she visits. (A 'thing' many of us take for granted.)

We need to be less tactful; Scream "THIS IS WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE!" Force people (like my hypothetical sister) to stand up and pay attention. Get them on our side. Actively prevent them from 'checking' in to their local dive for a single day, or googling pictures of Kim Kardasian's impressive chest of drawers. Instead of some abstract idea they'll only later complain about, give them a real taste of the future. Piss them off. Ignite their passion and get a real conversation going.

Even if this attempt amounts to nothing and it still passes, at least [Destructoid] tried. For freedom, and all that. Also, cocks.

Awesome, better to make a stand than do nothing. I'm hoping larger sites like Twitter and Facebook join in, that would REALLY help grab people's attention. It would also piss off entitled cunts who don't know about SOPA, so that would be fun.

I just hope this does something, so long as the blackout is before the actual vote so the politicians can feel the effects of it too this will work, god help us if it doesn't.

The only way I can see this having any effect is if the sites involved are going to redirect every page to americancensorship or an image like the one in the header, that would seriously raise awareness of the issue, especially on wikipedia but I would love Facebook, Twitter, Google & YouTube to get in on it too!

If it's just going to be a generic 404 message then I don't see it doing much but either way keep fighting the good fight guys!!

This socioeconomic transfixion, that has been poisoning America's political and social base, will crumble. A house divided cannot stand, especially when its very structure is rooted in the internet that we know of today.
