Alas, NY is far away.
I'm a bit sad that there won't be any FFXI tracks at this event, but almost everything Uematsu touches turns to magic, so I wouldn't be worried if I just ... 'happened' to be selected.
Dale, how many sexual favors is this going to take? I can dress up as JRPG character of your choice if you really wanted that kind of thing.
Plus I could take someone with me who would probably enjoy it very much as well. ^_~ gotta help me out
Hearing "You're not Alone" and "To Zanarkand" performed live would be amazing, since even the recording of the performances makes my adrenal glands swell. I hope whoever get to go really loves the music, cause that would be a sweet treat! Mmmm.
Personally I would love to hear Terra's Theme. I would be satisfied if they just played that and called it a night.
HOWEVER, I can easily afford to pay for a ticket, so if it came down to it, I would like to see some other NYC/nearby Dtoider get it. Just throwing that out there in case you have tickets you can't give away.
To say that I nostalgia'd hard would be an understatement. It was like a religious experience, and I use that in the most authentic and serious way possible. I felt my entire history as a gamer, not to mention a Final Fantasy fan, come over me. I felt my childhood, I felt the spirit of adventure that drew me to the series, and I felt all the feelings of being young again just wanting to play video games (instead of, you know, arguing about them online). I cried.
I want to point out that I dont really cry. I cant even remember the last time I've ever cried. Movies to nothing to me, music does nothing to me, and video games have hardly ever made me so teary-eyed. Even during painfully emotional break-ups I shed absolutely nothing. But this one song just triggered all kinds of emotions I thought I was beyond feeling.
I wont say that I deserve to go more than anyone else, but, from the bottom of my heart, I can safely say I will savor every moment of it, as someone who has deep ties to the series, as both a gamer and a person.
Also, I live in New York, which certainly helps a lot.

Pick me! Pick me the way every Final Fantasy hero picked saving the world over saying 'screw it' and going back to sleep! :D
Years later, trying to replay those games can't match up with the nostalgia. That is probably the nature of nostalgia. However, that does not stop someone from trying to grasp at those feelings. I'm sure there is a lot more to the phenomenon that others have put into words, I don't want to ruin it with my crude descriptions.
My point is music is the truest medium for revisiting that part of life. I doubt this is unique to Final Fantasy. So if I am becoming that cynic which spoils things instead of enjoys them, this would be my esuna.
Personally would be looking forward to hearing Aerith's and Terra's themes, as well as To Zanarkand.
Hopefully if I win this, she could finally understand how awesome this orchestra is. Her birthday is soon too, so it would be really awesome to win this and in the off chance that I do, I hope its for April 1.
It would be amazing to hear a live performance of some his most memorable songs. Living in NY makes it easy to reach the location, and being picked would be an incredible experience I'd never forget.
That is why I want to go.
@spartan480: What are your thoughts on Masashi Hamauzu?
He is definitely a talented composer. Judging just by his work on XIII all I can say was that it was what saved the game for me. There were times when I would think if I really wanted to continue playing, and while I was thinking the music brought me back to the game. He has a style that really branches from Uematsu but I enjoyed when they work together, my favorite collaboration of theirs is probably “The Song of Prayer” from FFX.
Also thank you for the kind words.
That said, I recently bought a house with my GF (now fiancée, I proposed last week!) and money is a little tight. We don't have too much expendable cash as we get accustomed to our new lifestyle. With my love of the series, and her love of orchestral music, this really does seem like a dream come true. A mix of both her pastime and mine, it could be an amazing bonding situation for us both, giving a common insight into each other's favorite pastimes.
Plus it would make for a great housewarming/early wedding gift!
Please consider us! :)
I've spent many hours playing that game many times (in one game session I maxed out the game's internal clock at 99:59:59), and I also spent many hours enjoying the game's soundtrack. It was pretty much THE game that got me into video game soundtracks, and the first game I bought a soundtrack for. At 54 dollars (I believe it was that... it was certainly in that range) the price was quite steep, but I gave my mother the money I earned working at Burger King while she let me use her credit card to purchase it, one of the very few times she's done it. What I got was a whopping FOUR DISC SOUNDTRACK, one disc more than the actual game itself, including a color manual with art and some stickers. I couldn't tell you how many times I listened to it, but it was A LOT.
My fascination with game soundtracks didn't stop there. I never got around to picking up 8's, but I got the US soundtrack for 9, courtesy of TokyoPop (also got The Bouncer's), while a friend actually got the Japanese soundtrack for 9, likely largely due to my obsession with Final Fantasy's music. I also got ahold of the US soundtrack for 10. Then of course the US version of Final Fantasy Anthology came with a soundtrack, if I'm not mistaken. Nowadays, the Internet has led to my knowledge of The Black Mages, and of course my interest in game music goes further, as I've bought the soundtrack for Guilty Gear X2, and I've listened to my fair share of other video game soundtracks.
So I'd say I'm qualified so far as liking Uematsu's work, and I live in Pennsylvania. It's not the closest drive to New York, but I could definitely make it there. As for songs I want to hear? I took a look at what the show has. On the first day, everything from FF7 easily, Clash On The Big Bridge, Terra's Theme, To Zanarkand. On the second day, jeez, that has Terra's Theme AND the Opera Theme? Good stuff. I'd take Aerith's Theme over the FF7 prelude too, even if the prelude is a Final Fantasy tradition. And definitely A Place To Call Home - Melodies Of Life. Not enough FF IX music there. Vamo' alla Flamenco IS there, and it's alright for a few listens, but admittedly not a favorite.
As for the songs I'd like to hear, well, the Prelude is a sentimental favorite. It brings back fond memories of the very first Final Fantasy game for the NES and being able to play it (after my parents beat it first, of course!). Aeris's Theme is her favorite though, so that'd definitely be a treat, if they played that. Whatever they play though, Uematsu's music is wonderful, and would be a pleasure to behold in all its live, orchestrated glory.
