Destructoid Hands-On: Greybush vs. Omega 5, an upcoming XBLA shooter due Winter

1:59 PM on 11.28.2007, Ron NSFWorkman 61 comments

     Pew pew pew!

Publisher's note:

Destructoid is launching our own embedded player in the next coming months, and with that we'll be bringing you a lot more exclusive video content of gameplay, interviews, and hands-on impressions from our Dtoid editors as well as Dtoid Community videos. We've promoted Greybush as our VP of all things video (and also cocks), so check out his first video and let us know what you think of the format and what you'd like to see more of in the future! -Niero

Not Ron's note:

I am an invisible black woman trapped in a skinny white man's body.  But more importantly, Destructoid has access to basically every XBLA game coming in the next 3 months, like this video about Omega 5 from Hudson / Natsume due out this Winter. With the permission of a few PR folks (thank you, you know who you are) we can bring you hands on impressions of some unreleased games.  Soon we can in fact serve this video in HD but this is just an example of what we're up to. Thanks to everyone that already provided feedback when we ran it on the cblogs.

Granted, we obviously can't show too much of Omega 5 at the risk of giving away some of the surprises or spoilers.  However, we can answer some basic questions and release a follow-up post with the responses.  So check out the video and let us know what you think!

Ron's Mom's note:

Ronnie? Is that you on the Internets?

Nice idea! I like the talking head in the begining, fading out once you get to the game itself. It'd be nice to have that fade back in as you're wrapping the preview up.

I might suggest taping the gameplay, then narrating it afterwards so you don't end up distracting yourself. I dig it a lot though, and would be totally into seeing more.

I will pay you to do this. With destructoid dorrahs.

Seriously though, if you do this weekly, or even every other week, it would help orientate me with the latest XBLA games.

Well, I honestly liked it with the distractions and all, but for the front page or something, you should tape it and then do it, as it looks and sounds cleaner and more concise then. But really, the idea itself is a good one, and you don't need to change much. As for the questions, that could work with us asking them, although I imagine some games might not warrant any decent questions occassionally. Thanks for the convo, BTW.

Oh and yes, this would help my decision. I am fucking buying this game, that's for sure. You seemed to enjoy it, the music is so old school shooterish, and you fly with no ship and shoot. Definite Buy.

Looks like a sidescroller Geometry Wars game, I'd play it.

Yeah, it definitely just sold me, so it can influenze my buying habits. I don't know that we need your ugly mug in the shot at all, but your sultry phone-sex-operator voice more than makes up for it, so if you really like being there, I won't hold it against you.

About the only important thing I could think to change is what Darkside said about rehearsing your presentation a bit with some pre-shot gameplay, but I personally like the more organic talk-as-you-go approach. You sounded at least as good as Jade Raymond explaining what was going on in Assassin's Creed demos. Probably better.

BomberTOID & Omega 5 is a reason to own a 360, NO?

I like the feature. That made me want to download the game on my imaginary 360.

This is a fantastic idea! Having someone actually make good gameplay videos? Who would've imagined that. I really love this idea, but you already pretty much showed everything I needed to know about this game.

Bouncing lasers and background things coming into actual gameplay just sold me on this. It does seem like there's a lot of trial and error, like when the big robot just jumps into view with no way to evade it. But since it doesn't insta-kill you, that doesn't seem like a big problem.

Keep up this stuff! Maybe if you have all XBLA games, you could ask the community which game they'd want to see in action the most?

This is an amazing idea, although I really should stop wasting money on XBLA games until Castle Crashers you just might convince me with one of these preview-ma-bobs.

I am feeling very positive about the video you did. The game was impressive (reminds me of Forgotten Worlds) and I liked the bit where the enemies move from the background to the foreground.

Btw, your voice is okay. More please. :o)

You guys have all failed at getting the only meaningfull question:

Is it better than Boom Boom Rocket? If not, on a scale of 1 to Boom Boom Rocket, where does it stand?

My only other question which isn't answered by the vid is how long does the single player game last? i don't want to spend my hard earned MS points on a half-hour game.

Yah the one question I have about this game is how long is it.

Like I said before, I like the commentary over gameplay vid

Looks good, you sold me. I'd definitely like to see more of these. I also second Mxy's idea to record your dialogue once you're already recorded the footage. Oh, and consider doing these for VC and PSN releases.

I always thought it was ronworkmen without the g. And the game could use some mini games. Don't see how this can go online an not have computer co-op.

It needs more Jade Raymond. More Jade and it'll be an internet sensation!

Serial, this is a good idea, as I'd only thought this was an aegis wing with people instead of ships game. After watching the footage of the game play I'm going to pick it up. Mix some post-recorded audio with some shoot from the hip type stuff, and you should have some win.

Yeah, great job, Ron. This was very informative; like bhive01, it would be cool if someone could do this for PSN titles (obviously, that may not be possible since Sony doesn’t seem like the kind of company that would deliver months of content early to Dtoid editors). That headset made you look even cooler than I thought you were, btw.

Good job on the vid, Ron. I don't know if the vid would help my purchase decision since my XBLA purchases are based on the free trial you get with every game (Sony, pay attention). I'm not saying anything negative about the vid, though. Dtoid definitely needs more of this.

Curios as to the difficulty level of this game.

Any chance we could get you to post all of the games that you so we can start thinking of questions?
