The newest Dead Space developer diary is all about the sound and music. David Feise and Don Veca, the sound and audio designers on Dead Space, walk us through some the workings of audio and sound they’ve implemented into the game to heighten the atmosphere.
One thing that really separates the audio in Dead Space from other games is the fear emitter system. In other games, such as Resident Evil, there would be a dramatic score playing, but it would keep playing if you just stayed in one place. In Dead Space, the fear emitters control the audio and music based around what the player is doing, so the sounds are rarely ever the same, ensuring a suspenseful feel throughout the game.
One really cool detail that’s revealed at the end of the diary is that they’ve taken the sound the San Francisco BART train makes when it’s crossing the bay and used it in the game. I have to cross the bay every time I go into San Francisco, and this sound really is one of the worst things you’ll ever hear. If you’re still itching for more info on the game, just head on over to the official Dead Space Web site. What do you all think about what Dead Space is doing with the sound and audio design: will it make for a more frightning gameplay experience?

I am sorry sir but you sold me on this game a long time ago. Just release it, ok?
The game keeps seeming better and better, but I'm sure I saw these two guys in GTA IV rubbing their hands over a flaming bin.
I'm with the Dork.
I love it.
I'm sold. Nice post Hamza.
Very very cool. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this doesn't disappoint.
I like the heavy focus on sound design they're apparently giving this game, as it can make or break a survival horror game.
a lot of scary ass games are coming out this year.
anyone think this has something to do with bioshock?
Without a doubt, it's this kind of dedication that makes a good game. I'm getting more and more sold. These guys seem to understand the inherent suspense that the silence of space can instill in some people.
Agree on the music and sound effect thing. I'm playing Fatal Frame III right now and all the sounds in the haunted house freak me out.
On a side note doesn't that one guy look like the offspring of Jay & Silent Bob?
This kicks the game out of the meh category to the hmmm category.
between Dead Space and the Aliens game i can tell i'm not going to be getting a lot of sleep later this year. i think you said it best Crapsh00t, it's dedication like this to elements that oft get overlooked that make a good game great.
looks dope. looking forward to it
Dtoid movie player FTW
I'm loving the Destructoid movie player.
Sweet Zombie Jesus, that game looks like it could make a mature man cry like a baby :O
god bless you destructoid and fulfilling my audio design obsession.
AUDIO MAJORZ FTWZ
The BART train really does sound awful. I like that the developer is paying such attention to something that seems to be overlooked in so many other games.
Wow. They seem to really care and know what they are doing. My anticipation for this game only increases. I'll be picking this up for PS3 and maybe PC(if it's on Steam) this Halloween.
I want to play this so bad...but I know when I have the opportunity...I'll puss out and beat it within 2 years minimum.
Interesting watch. Seems they really want to innovate, at least when it comes to sound. I think this game is gonna rock. If they approach all facets of the game this way it should be a real winner.
They're exactly right when they mention that most scary movies/games are barely frightening without audio.
I hate loud rushing noises though as they stress me more than scare me :(
If I liked horror games, I'd be all over this. I don't, however.
Absolutely right on the money, sounds scare me alot more than anything visual, even more so if I don't know what it is.
Fuck, I can't wait for this, I'm sitting in a pitch black room, and even this trailer freaked me a little.
that sounded great! ( too bad somebody just walked into my work-office :p )
Every time i start to worry that survival horror is dying, some game proves me wrong. This officialy jumped to the top of my list
I've been blaming Rev and now it's YOUR vid that is autoplaying!
(I'm sure not for everyone)
These developer diaries are really good: I know it seems like they're giving away the elements of the game, but it's good to see the work and thinking that's going into this game. Really looking forward to this one.
nice work CTZ, the player and everything is really cool. The game looks impressive too :)
At the beginning of the video I thought the developers were pretentious. but geez, these guys are good.
I want this game... in and around my mouth
Being an RPG and SCI-FI whore.. I will take this in all it's glory.
If there's a way to play it FPS, I'm there.
Tycho of Penny-Arcade fame linked to this article. How cool is that?
