Destructoid is proud to exclusively unveil the first gameplay video for D-Pad Studios' Owlboy. We spoke about the game a while ago, when it caught our eye for its retro look and unique promise of "free roaming flying with dungeons."

As a fan of anything that uses sprites, is 2D, and scrolls, I wanted more from Owlboy, and more is what we have. This above video demonstrates what Owlboy is all about, and it looks pretty bloody good. The nostalgic visuals and the beautiful music have pretty much won my heart.

Tomorrow, we will be posting an exclusive interview with D-Pad studios on this new game, which is to be entered into the Independent Games Festival and hopes to be published for both the PC and Xbox 360.

Be sure to let us know what you think of Owlboy.

NO COMMENTS? WTF?

I think you need to repost this with a giant flashing header that screams HOLY SHIT AWESOME ASS SPRITE BASED PLATFORMER. Because obviously not enough people know about the awesome that is Owlboy from name alone =<

Ha ha, ignore my first comment, you saw nothing and know not what happened.

Right tho, Owlboy is awesome. I just hope they actually do release it for PC unlike that lying bastard with Braid =<.

At first I thought you said an Oldboy game. I just came to see the hate flow.

That absolutely looks like something I would like to play. The sprite based art looks wonderfully lush and detailed.

Excited to see more coverage.

I know the company is called D-pad, but if that is what we have to use on the xbox this could be one sticky experience. NO, not that kind of sticky.

This game seems interesting... I like the art and the 2D aspect of it... the combat seems simple... Owl boy though? Seriously? A boy who inherits owl-like powers is the best they could think of?

See, this is what I hoped would happen when they started talking about XNA.
Instead we got Being, which was mildly amusing for an hour, and fuck all else.
Glad to see the awesome is out there, and coming eventually.

AMG!! An Indie game with retro graphics! What will they think of next :/

Seriously the video game community is becoming so predictable. Better hope the big wigs dont get wind of this trend any time soon or all you hardcore kids will have to find a new trend to love on.

PS: if back in the day developers would have been able to create the games of today in the past they wouldnt have thought twice about it. Liking retro stuff doesnt make you a purist, it just makes you a smug douche

Also, this game has fulfilled it's tophat quota, and thusly cannot fail.

And "if back in the day developers would have been able to create the games of today in the past they wouldnt have thought twice about it. Liking retro stuff doesnt make you a purist, it just makes you a smug douche" is one of the dumbest, most nonsensical thing I've ever read on the site.

A total logical fallacy followed by aberrant ignorance at fundamentals of game design, all fueled by a desire to "be different" from everyone else. Very impressive. So much more entertaining than the usual idiocy.

Absolutely lovely. The animation seems a little bit on the rough side, but I just can't hate something with bonafide distinguishable pixels. Now where's my Fez? I haven't heard anything about it in a long time. I need my Fez!
