Funnily enough, I just bought three PSP games digitally today in anticipation of moving them over to the NGP - no more UMD purchases for me, since they'd just go to waste, apparently.
Does anyone remember when, during E3, Sony said they were "looking into" a way for UMD users to transfer their purchases to the PSP-Go, or at least get a discount? Way to promise, Sony.
@Holmes
Haha, there's no way Monster Hunter would go to the 3DS for non-guaranteed sales, when Capcom can guarantee at least 4 Million in Japan alone on the NGP. That's the craziest thing I've heard all week :p
i love the PSP2 from the tech to the look of it, but i'm also taking a wait and see approach
It's funny because I am a tech buff and personally love the HD/intesne graphics in videogames. That OLED screen will be amazing as I use my PSP to watch movies all the time when travling so that is a super important feature to me.
I also see these handhelds targeting different markets really, I don't imagine that too many people will buy the NGP and 3DS. One for the sheer cost to buy both and that these offer such different features. It's like buying an iphone and a Blackberry....well, maybe not, lol.
I haven't bought a UMD since the Go launched (I have a PSP 3000) in anticipation of them going all-digital (or at least dropping the format). Looks like I made the right decision :)
That's my impression of you in this discussion, Nick Chester.
LOLOLOL
One day I will be this Witty and I will thank Jim Sterling for it.
The GO was an interesting experiment but many people were effectively locked out of their own purchases (provided they sold their previous PSP). That's...bad, and while there are a lot of PSP games on PSN people can buy day-one for the PSP2, there are many more available in stores and most of us have plenty of UMDs.
Isn't it weird? Sony wasn't the first company to do backwards-compatibility, but they were the one to capitalize upon it with the PS2, and with the PS3 having dropped PS2 games and the PSP2 dropping (physical) PSP games...just strikes me as odd.
Problem is, a few games like Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, and Mega Man Powered Up, to name a few, aren't on the digital marketplace.
Oh wait, what on earth does that red light on the top right mean? Oh, I can only play for an hour before the battery dies?
That's cool...

With that said, imagine playing Knights in the Nightmare. Now while holding it normally in your palms, drag your finger across the back touch screen, using that to move your character (remember, doesn't have to be 1:1, so you don't have to move your finger across the WHOLE screen). Simple, intuitive, AND comfortable.
Isn't that like having your ass where your face should be?"
Ha, priceless!
This comment and attitude bums me the fuck out. THIS was what sold Gameboy, Gameboy Color, game Gear, Gameboy Advance, etc and so forth. This attitude of redefining "good" portable games has a systems library becoming $.99 flash games lifted from Newgrounds members as the preferred method as directly opposed to deep, meaningful experiences like Dragon Quest IX, Spirit Tracks, and Wipeout. When that corner is finally turned and we can no longer go back, I won't own a handheld. You guys will be happy, I'll just collect games from the systems that remembered they were systems, not student project flash portals.
Now there's an idea...
Personally, it all comes down to the software. I don't really play my handhelds on the go that often, I kind of treat them like smaller consoles. If the launch line-up is decent (and if Sony somehow gets Uncharted/Killzone/Resistance/LittleBigPlanet/WipeOut all out at launch, it will be), then it comes down to pricing. The 3DS is asking for £40 a game, I won't be surprised if the NGP does the same. If it goes over £230 (and odds are it will), then it better have a game or two bundled in. If not, no sale until the price drops/a decent bundle becomes available.
It's got a Call of Duty game coming out on it.
If Sony are clever and market that HARD they will benefit from it MASSIVELY.
Aren't gamers kind of the main target audience? I don't think that anyone who didn't understand that the touch pad will have multiple functions like operating as the secondary triggers in a shooter is interested in picking thus up anyway.
Maybe the 3DS isn't for me either then? I'm so confused.
Yeah, they certainly haven't kept up with their digital offerings. But, like I mentioned to you on Twitter, I'm not too big of a handheld gamer (meaning I don't buy very many handheld games... other than iPhone), so I haven't missed out on TOO much!
"To speak to Nick and Matt's points, the 3DS is looking to offer something different than just "a home console experience in your hand", while the NGP that seems to be exactly what the NGP is going for. I know that personally,"
Taking a break from writing angry words about 'Bayonetta' Holmes scores the best round in this fight.
The future may be a brave new cloud-based world, but in the here and now hardware and it's specific line-up stills rules like the last of the dinosaurs. PSP/DS both had success filling in the nooks consoles couldn't. RPGs and innovative games that now cost too much to produce on the flagship consoles won over significant audiences. The PSP/DS had clearly defined strengths different from the console line-ups.
If the development cost of games for the portable system rises, won't that kill a lot of the more 'niche' games? If you're playing versions of big console hits on a portable, where's the product/line-up differentiation? When portable systems cost within 10-15% of a console, the games are within 10-15% of console games, and the titles have great overlap, isn't a company now just cannibalizing their own console market?
I'm all for the sexy new thing. However, I'm not for killing off the strengths of the PSP/DS era gaming line-up. Aiming for 'almost PS3' with PS3 ported titles (at almost PS3 prices)....no sir, I don't like it.
A few good games at or around launch and I'll still probably pick it up (especially if there are some good RPGs), but you guys brought up a lot of good points. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
It will be shiny and play games, though. Yay!
Who'd have thought you'd find that on Destructoid.........
Your points are largely absurd and for a post " leave your flaming at the door" you guys sure do bash it and the company in the ground more than any other console/handheld.
I'm not calling bias but you're not showing me anything but.
The handheld has a lot of features and most of which were asked for by gamers. They're doing stuff innovative for the hand held and more often than not you all say they're not innovative but as soon as they do something you bitch and then some.
Who'd have thought you'd find that on the Dtoid comments section.....
As for the price, I'm guessing it's 350$. However, the 3DS made a mistake pricing it at 250$ so if the NGP surprises me and end up at 300$, it could be a lot more competitive than all of you previously thought. I doubt most gamers are that interested in 3D technology anyway. Still, it's Nintendo and usually they manage to flourish in the handheld market. However, I don't see the NGP as a failure waiting to happen.
Besides, I'm waiting for future revisions anyway. But the negativity from most of you on Destructoid really rubs me the wrong way considering you were more or less rubbing your dicks when the 3DS specs were announced. It's true that the announcement, like Jim said, needs to be taken with some distance and wait until we get a word on pricing.
However, the big news for me today is that they're expanding the store to the mobiles so fight the mobile gaming wave on their own turf. That is a major step to avoid being taken over by smartphones games.
And you don't want a console experience in the palm of your hand? Sounds like you're more an Apple girl then I guess :/
Personally, I don't don't care about the distinction between portable gaming or on a home console gaming. I love playing Phoenix Wright on WiiWare, and Persona on the PSP. The only difference is, I share a TV, so I can't hog it with +70 hour RPGs anymore. That's why I'm so glad bout P3P.
As for the new handheld, I definitely am more interested than I expected to me. As long as everything isn't locked to online -- I will NEVER support cloud computing -- I'm all over this.
At least, with the announcement of this new beast, I can safely and without regret, completely ignore the 3DS.
