tits comment out of the way, tara's cans were awesome.
Personal preference, I guess, but I'd rather play something a little different than the same Mega Man game for 20 years in a row.
I'm making your ass play Bulletstorm. You said last episode you can't wait for Duke Nukem Forever. Bulletstorm is that type of a shooter. You stupid hair head.
Hamza -- (And this applies to what Andy said as well) Duke Nukem is a character. The original game had him picking up footballs and cans of cola for bonus points. After that, he was handing twenties to strippers. 3D was, aside from being a kickass game, a rather brilliant satire of sci-fi/action movies. Forever will hopefully be acceptable followup.
Duke's mythological in a sense, in the same way the characters from early Mortal Kombat are. Scorpion is a skeleton ninja from hell who shoots harpoons at people and shouts "GET OVER HERE," which makes no sense, but at least Ed Boon has managed to maintain the same character, even if he has to tweak him a bit every few years.
Cliffy B just takes ideas for weapons or action sequences and builds games around them. If he'd taken Jazz Jackrabbit, as a character, and made him the increasingly offensive hero of various games, I probably wouldn't have an issue. I imagine there's some alternate universe where Conker's Bad Fur Day stars Jazz Jackrabbit, and is also Unreal Tournament. (That's the same alternate universe where Duke Nukem Forever came out in 1998, and WoW never existed.)
I'm sure Bulletstorm will be a good game, in a sense, but it's junk food. It's just an excuse for Cliffy B to to use the quadruple-barrel shotgun, something he's been wanting to see since the first Unreal game. He's come up with some cool ideas (that was not one of them) but they're just that. Ideas. He hasn't shown enough imagination or talent to flesh them out at all.
I'm glad you guys like my suit. I just got back from the bars, so sorry if this was a sniggle-bit rambunctious. Or something.
I think I know whatcha' mean, but...
... is using quadruple-barrel shotgun bad? Even if design was built all around cool and overpowered weapons, being the reason of the game's possible lack of story, this may be one of the most fun-to-play games of all time.
Of course, we don't have the elements that help us fight the opinion that video games are something more than just shooting everything around you, but CliffyB alread proved (at least in my opinion) with Gears of War 1 that he knows how to deliver things, that are simply cool to do and extremely satisfying.
Having so many 'epic' games on the market, having an interesting story and all the stuff, but usually lacking this maximally satisfying gameplay, Bulletstorm may become the ultimate hole-filler. Or something.
That didn't sound good.
When it's Tara's turn to put on the suit?
I can see how it'd backfire one day, though.
Max: "Fucking dammit! They cancelled FarmVille 2! They were planning a fucking MAKE YOUR OWN FERTILIZER FEATURE! I was DAMN excited for mixing my cow's shit into plants virtually."
Tara: "Hahaha!.."
Max: "Shit. And within three days of my poor old grandmother dying, too."
Tara: "HAHAHA!!"
Max: "FUCK YOU TARA LONG MY NANA DID DIE HER FUNERAL IS IN TWO DAYS."
And the point I think people are missing in the comments is that those games lack any sort of style or character. What they do have are characters lost inside of giant power suits, who thrust their dicks at their enemies while they fire big guns. Which could be appealing in a campy Duke Nukem sort of way, if you didn't always get the feeling that someone was serious when they made these.. You know, kitsch vs camp.
But then again that might not be the exact point Max was making after all. Either way, I still enjoyed this new side of him, if it weren't for the sudden surge of cup kleptomania..
Totally with Max on the Bulletstorm thing. Played it a little bit and it's... meh. Playing it is no more fun than just watching the trailers (which aren't terribly fun to begin with).
If you're looking forward to Bulletstorm, just do this: sit back, close your eyes. Picture yourself kicking someone in the balls and then shooting them in the head. Done that? Great, you've just had more fun than you will if you actually buy the game.
what do we learn from this story? Never steal Tara's cups
Sometimes it's quite relaxing to play a game where you mindlessly go around shooting things. Junk food can be good. Look at Borderlands. But I do see the point he's making and to each their own.
Bulletstorm is one of those games that I just can't seem to care about. Maybe it's the whole "Fuck Yeah!" attitude of the game. Or the art style. I know it will be good, but it just look like every other game Epic does.
It's also nostalgia. When I was twelve, I was running around throwing money at strippers while quoting John Carpenter movies. It's part of the reason I act the way I do today.
I've always thought of Duke Nukem as a rather smart tongue-in-cheek satire of how ridiculous All-American action movie culture is, while also managing to be good stupid fun. You can appreciate it on multiple levels. Bulletstorm just seems like Cliffy B's idea of what's actually cool.
If Duke Nukem was a teeshirt, it'd be one like this: http://cdn1.iofferphoto.com/img/item/122/893/307/DYgy.jpg
If any of Cliffy B's games was a teeshirt, it'd be like this:

I'm actually kinda surprised I haven't pissed off more people with this rant.
"There's so much shit happening that you don't even notice that you're not playing a videogame, you're playing a parody of a videogame."
That's the quote I was referring to when I asked why you thought it didn't look like a game. (Sorry I wasn't more clear, but I was very, very drunk last night.)
For the record, I really do get what you're saying, and I agree that Epic's games are meathead games. But the thing is, I have FUN playing meathead games, which is kind of the point. Now, that isn't to say I don't have fun playing non-meathead games as well, because I do. But I don't play games searching for some deeper meaning; sure, it's nice when it's there, but it's not a requirement for me to have fun. Rather, I play them to experience things that I can't in real life for whatever reason. Bulletstorm -- and other Epic games -- fulfill those needs wonderfully.
It's fine if you require more out of your games than that, it's just that I feel like you're limiting yourself. It's OK to be immature sometimes ;)
And come on, Gag Reflex is fucking hilarious.
It looks more imaginative gameplay wise than anything else I've seen in the FPS genre in a while. Crushing guys with an elevator? Electric whip leash? I'm not looking for a game that's particularly civil or proper, but I think that's where the enjoyment comes from.
You shouldn't enjoy it like you would say...a lobster dinner, more like taco bell. It's cheap, yeah, but it's delicious after 12. PM. ; )
<3
This, this so much, i don't mind playing a meathead game once in a while the same way i don't mind playing and artsy fartsy game every now and then, provided they're both fun. in fact thats the best way to enjoy gaming, try everything and anything and you might find jewels you might have never experienced otherwise. Sometimes, people take their hobby with way too much passion, everyone should just cool down and have fun with whatever they like to play without bitching at other people's choices, period.
@Max: "It's also nostalgia. When I was twelve, I was running around throwing money at strippers while quoting John Carpenter movies. It's part of the reason I act the way I do today. "
By that idea i could say that Bulletstorm will be to some current 12yos (cuz there will be 12yo playing this, let's not kid ourselves ok?) what Duke Nukem 3D was to you, so maybe to you this is a silly unimaginative game but for some kids this will be their defining "granpa clause" game.
Also, dudeness is not to be confused with His Dudeness.
Bulletstorm will be over the top much like Duke but probably won't have the characterization of a Duke Nukem to make it funny beyond you actually performing the kills.
I will say this and kind of off handedly quote Holmes. Half the fun of a game like Dead Rising is the serious approach to the comical. Sure you can't dress up in ridiculous costumes like those games but I think the same spirit is intended for a game like Bulletstorm.
Anyways, better jump down from the slippery slope that is half agreeing with you half defending Cliffy B's games.
So:

Your rant was pointless. Seriously.
It's great that you have an opinion and all, but feeling the need to trash an unreleased game (not to mention other great, successful and fun games) based on the fact that you dislike the game's designer is pretty childish and immature. I've come to expect that from your episodes, but this was a new low.
Being a fanboy is probably a requirement for Destructoid, I get that. Most of the DTOID guys are pretty open about their personal preferences and, while that makes you seem sincere, it also gets pretty annoying when you start doing it for kicks. Please, for the sake of your readership, try to hide all that personal bias. Or, at least, save it for the review.
I did really enjoy Bulletstorm when I played it last year. The game mechanics worked and it gave me a ton of ways to creatively dispatch my foes. For the record, I enjoy the Gears of War series a lot too but I'm not a Keystone drinking frat boy. Moral of the story: I like fun games.
Can you go into greater detail on why the original Duke Nukem was great because you could collect footballs and give money to strippers?
Bulletstorm when first announced and previewed made me second guess Cliffy's motives. Is he really trying to parody the industry and his own genre?
Bulletstorm is like Stallone's Expendables. Unnecessary, a mockery and is a plea by Cliffy B that he is stuck in a loop that he cant break out of. He's locked into this stale, repetitive "meathead" syndrome and he can't express himself in any other way. He's a programmer, not a visionary. Creativity is not about repeating the same formula. It's about outside the box thinking.
And Max you shouldn't expect DTOID's gamers to agree with you, after all they eat all this BS up. They're partly responsible for needless iterations of shitty game franchises. Cause they cant stop spending money and wasting time.
Judging by the amount of people who AREN'T pissed about this, I'm evidently not the only one who feels this way. Duke Nukem 3D came out in 1996, and was one of the first adult games with an adolescent sense of humor. It's currently 2011. I'm not saying Cliffy B's games shouldn't exist, I'm saying that there's a lot more out there now. And that he's a smug asshole.
Chainsaw guns are pretty fucking cool, but Gears of War is a game that takes itself too seriously. Is it insane, over-the-top bromance, or is an actual sci-fi game about war against underground locust-men?
And if Cliffy B wants to punch me in the face, he's welcome to try. I'll go get him a little stepladder.
You're totally right that it's a meathead game, it's going to be retarded fun like the expendables was fun just to watch shit blow up. I never asked anything more of it than that, It's not pretending to be a high society game. I like that.
"And Max you shouldn't expect DTOID's gamers to agree with you, after all they eat all this BS up. They're partly responsible for needless iterations of shitty game franchises. Cause they cant stop spending money and wasting time."
Look, it comes down to this...everyone likes different games. Saying we're wasting our time is ignorant. We ENJOY playing these games. Playing any game is essentially wasting time. They're entertainment. You will obviously like games that I don't like and vise-versa, please don't make us out to be stupid or ignorant of what we're buying because we enjoy a different form of entertainment than you do. Because that frankly makes you come off as immature, despite whatever we're buying lacking "creativity"
Why do millions of people spend money on AAA meathead action movies? Because they're fun. That's what we're all here for: Fun. If one person enjoys it, and genuinly thinks it's FUN, why ruin that or take it away?
I feel like people exclude themselves from fun experiences because they're too manly or "immature". It's the same school of thought that hardcore gamers won't play WII games.
A huge body count and lots of explosions amidst a brown urban wasteland is not epic, it's just lazy. The games are just so ridiculous and yet are completely serious and there isn't a single bit of personality throughout the cast.
But I think that the worst thing that it did was make cover shooters a big deal. They are fucking boring. Taking a really dumb shooter with a bunch of throwaway macho characters with chainsaw-guns throwing them into a bleak game world with no real plot and then making them spend half the time hiding behind walls and crates doesn't seem like a great recipe for a game.
The only good thing I can say about Bulletstorm from what I've seen so far is that it doesn't look as boring as Gears. Yay.
"I feel like people exclude themselves from fun experiences because they're too manly or "immature". It's the same school of thought that hardcore gamers won't play WII games."
Exactly.
From what I can tell Max takes video games way too seriously. People that focus their attention away from the gameplay, game mechanics, and fun, and instead whine about the head of the studio are pretentious pricks. **** em. He’s a manbaby that has a weird hate towards someone he doesn’t know. He probably needs therapy.
Max let me give you some advice: separate the art from the artist. Lou Reed is an egotistical dbag, and yet the Velvets made amazing music. Same instance here. Judging from the video it seems you hate Cliffy more than the game. Anyways you’re still an ahole.
What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
You know, serious shit that we should actually get angry at other people for.

Your comments (mainly that last one) just prove that you're a childish and immature "kid" who's gone "power crazy" from all the attention you get on Dtoid. But who cares?
I have nothing against a person expressing his/her opinion. I just don't like it when those opinions come from a completely misinformed person.
Good luck with this temp job, man!
But yeah, name-calling over this is a bit much.
Max isn't power crazy. Destructoid is a video game blog, not the Third Reich. He's just who he is. Also, pretty much everyone on the internet is a d-bag once in a while. Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = @hole. It just seems that whenever an argument breaks out around here, it has to do with someone getting angry at someone else for hating on something they enjoy. News flash, not everyone likes what you like, get over it and enjoy Gears of War if you want to. Why waste your energy explaining how Max's opinion is wrong? It only speaks towards your insecurity if you ask me. Not being able to handle someone's dislike for a video game is a common thing for most people out there in video game website land.
I think I'll go play Super Meat Boy without worrying about whether the person reading this comment thinks its "trying too hard" or it "looks horrible" or whatever.
