Densha de Go! The train simulator game in yawntastic action

Remember that train simulator game we mentioned for the Wii that would require a special controller? Well, Densha De Go! came out a couple of months ago and it's everything you'd expect a train sim game to be. Boring.

Sure, this game is very original and I'm sure the Japanese (doubtful it'll ever come stateside) are eating it up (even with the $100 price tag). This is just the last thing the Wii needs right now though. People don't need to be plopping down an extra $50 to play a game that hardly utilizes the motion sensing controller at all. I'm getting sick of all this Wii nonsense.

Am I alone here? Or are any of you feeling the same way I am?

yeah Cheapy loves these. I'm sure if your like him you will enjoy it, but pretty much everyone else probably won't. it would be cool if you could have multiple trains derail and smash into buildings and parking lots though.

From what I watched of the video, it really seemed quite soothing. No way do I have the time, money, or even sufficient interest for something like this, but it definitely looks solid for what it is. And what it is is a niche title that is not designed to appeal to people who's immediate reaction is "I'm driving a train, I'm driving a train. BORING!"

-> CTZ: I'm really not sure what you mean by "getting sick of all this wii nonsense". This is a game that it's safe to say will not be released outside of japan, with an exclusive peripheral designed independently of the wiimote. If it is this particular nonsense you are getting sick of, you must have a very low threshold of patience for transport simulators, as I believe this is the wii's first.

I to would like more good, meaty wii games, but I posses something called "patience". Early adoption is never a great idea, software for new consoles is always sparse. Good games will come. In the meantime, feel free to occupy yourself elsewhere, if there's nothing you want to play on the wii.

Make it crash or something! How could that be MORE boring?

They shovelware these games to every popular system, it's a weird niche market. This isn't meant to be a mass market game anymore than a tactical submarine warfare sim or the like. People really into this genre will be the ones who shell out for the controller. This same kind of thing has come to the PS2 before, And Xbox had that ridiculously awesome Steel Battalion controller so I wouldn't exactly label as just wii nonsense.

I imported one of these games for my PSP and it's (against all odds) fun. It's bizarre, no doubt.... but done knock it till you've tried it... play-asia has the PSP ones and they're not that expensive... it's worth the buy

Train Simulators are cool and all, but my friend aways says that simulator creators need to take the next step and bring us Elevator Simulator Extreme!!!

I think the Japanese have a strange fixation with trains. And while I do agree that this does look pretty boring, I have to disagree with every single Wii game needing motion control. There are games that benefit from it and games that don't. Especially when they're just tacked on.

What I meant by "Wii nonsense" is everything Nintendo is doing right now. Horrible VC prices, no great games on shelves (there are good games, sure, but nothing great), and they keep pushing back anything that is going to be good. I'm just getting tired of everyone saying that the Wii is awesome, yet there's nothing that proves that right now. Developers are doing nothing to fully utilize the Wiimote. I've been patient long enough with the Wii.
As far early adopters comment goes, Xbox had a good choice of games right out the gate. Granted, I'm a FPS whore. Also, Brad, I LIKE the niche games. Samba De Amigo, Track N Field for the NES, even the damn Power Glove!

Mxyzptlk: See the thing about Steel Battalion is that it was a great game. That controller was worth being able to pilot what a mech may be like. Sure it costed a lot, but at least it's better than moving and stoping a train on a linear path.

-> CTZ: If you're sicking of hearing how awesome the wii is, I'm not sure you've been reading dtoid. Every time it's mentioned, I find myself defending it from irrational barbs in the comments. Personally, I think twilight princess and wii sports are really great games(as is warioware, if a little short lived). To me, as someone who prefers fpses on the pc, the original xbox only had a handful of appealing titles in it's whole lifespan. The 360 also has only become attractive to me shortly before the wii's release.

As for developers doing nothing to fully utilise the wiimote, I'd disagree with you there. The problem is, they all thought the wii would tank like the gc before it, so they didn't start making those games until after the console was released and the bomb dropped. In the meantime, first party nintendo games will hopefully be frequent enough to stave off most of the dust from gathering.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the "pushing back" of titles, most previously announced ballpark releases seem to be being kept pretty consistent. I've a feeling you might be talking about smash bros., but that hasn't been pushed back. No release date was given before, that remains true. If I recall rightly, super paper mario was just kind of sprung on us too, so don't be too pessimistic.

Finally, niche is not a genre. There are lots of different niches for lots of different gamers with lots of different games filling them. I love me some rhythm games and shmpups, but management and simulation games just don't appeal. If you've never played a train sim you like, how do you judge whether this one is any good or not?

FIRST OFF BRAD ... fuck ... I forgot all about Twilight Princess X(. That was really great. I'm not a Zelda fan either, but that was great.

I understand that developers thought the Wii could tank, but what about Nintendo itself? Zelda was originally a GC game first and only pushed back to help sell the Wii. They've come out with other games, like Wario, Mama, Elebits, but not enough to keep the momentum going in my opinion. And to developers that fully supported the Wii, namely Ubisoft, their games weren't that awesome. Rayman was decent, but look at Red Steel. How in the hell Ubi let that game into the market I'll never understand. I'm just fed up seeing games that are either ports from the PS2 (Both new Wii games this week are also on the PS2) or mostly focusing on the puzzle genre. Nintendo can do better than this.

I was mostly referring to Metroid when I said they keep pushing back games. That's a really big franchise they promised to have out by now, but they keep pushing it back. Which I guess might be ideal since Wiis are hard to get still. Once Smash Bros finally comes out, I'll stop my bitching too. I won't care about anything else for the Wii. In fact, I challenge you to a Smash Bros match sir! (THAT IS IF THEY DON'T FUCK UP AND EXCLUDE ONLINE PLAY).

I interpret niche as all the funky games that need that extra weird controller or just the flat out weird (KATAMARIIIIIII).
As far as how I can judge a game that I never played, I'm just giving my opinion. I don't get it, that's all.

Parrothead: The band is Dragon Ash. No clue on the song though. Oh yeah, how's that friend of yours (from the Dtoid 1 yr party). :D

Nintendo had zelda, wii sports and excitetruck for launch, warioware shortly after, then super paper mario a couple of weeks back(assuming you're not unfortunate enough to be in europe). 5 games in 7 months, not counting wii play, isn't a bad number in my books. Ubisoft unfortunately just sold out and cashed in. Rather than delaying red steel, which was clearly not ready for release, they rushed it out along with a sloppy far cry port, and the so-so cod3. Launch titles = muchos cha-ching. Sucks for us, good for their investors. But at least raving rabids was enjoyable. Konami at least seem to be doing good things, elebits is good by most all accounts(not actually released in europe until this friday, at which time I'll be promptly purchasing it), and I really like the look of dewy's adventure. All the other companies are still playing catch up; decent games take a long while to produce. I expect things will have picked up by july/august, and all our wii woes forgotten.

You're on for the smash bros. bout though, with the qualifiers of me getting around to picking up a wireless router, the game getting released in europe this decade, and nintendo not raping us in the face by excluding online. I'm guessing you'll beat my ass but good however, I somehow missed the previous two consoles' iterations.

The sad thing is, if this had come out for the Dreamcast I probably would have bought it. That system had some weird mind control power that made me buy silly peripherals all the time.
