When I looks a Demon's Souls, all I see generic knights fighting generic monsters for no discernible reason. I know there must be more to it than that, but it seems like something you have to play to understand.
Still a good game though
And just as an aside, I've given Jim plenty of grief in the past over some of his posts, but I just want to say that this was a very well written and thought out article. Keep 'em coming, Jim.
I hate the GTA games to be honest. They're really boring to me. I guess, yea, Demon's Souls could be reduced to knights fighting generic monsters for no apparent reason, but then you'd have to reduce Shadow of the Colossus to a 16ish boss fight with only 1 level. So yea, you gotta play it.
@ Letters numbers and spaces are ok
hmmm it was at 90 just a couple days ago. I wonder what changed it.
Also I LOVE the feeling of the boss battles. Yeah it may "feel easy" if you know what to do, but the "realistic" danger of what the bosses can do to you in one attack makes you really have to plan out your strategy. The fact "grinding and getting more stat points" only helps so much is great too, it really makes you learn how to beat bosses, not just muscle by.
Dammit Jim did you foresee this? Was this the REAL reason for moving rather than your "Family"
Thank you for giving this game the LOVE it DESERVES. I picked this up on a work trip to Asia, and it's owned my waking thoughts since then. I'm playing Uncharted 2 right now, but I just want to get back to Demon's Souls. This quote is so true..."It makes you talk about it. It makes you think about it. You'll be at work, trying to concentrate on business, but in your mind you're just plotting out new strategies and approaches to the game's many and varied obstacles."
A buddy and I email back and forth everyday talking about how/what we did last night in Boletaria. It fosters a SERIOUS community factor.
When thinking about the "asking for help" you talked about, all I could think of is MAGNALON. That dude is awesome! He's been an advocate for and an ally in Demon's Souls for a while now. I was actually waiting for you to mention him, but I guess I'm doing that now.
This game brings me back to my NES & SNES days, going to school and talking about a game in order to get past a part. This game is hard until you figure out what you need to do and then it is easy. But it's the journey of figuring that out that makes Boletaria such an addicting place to visit.
This game and both Uncharted's are the BEST games on the PS3 IMO. I own both a 360 and a PS3, and I haven't played my PS3 this much since I got it.
For me the only other game I see giving this a run for GOTY is BORDERLANDS, and thats not out yet so we'll see. But for now Demon's Souls owns me, and I sometimes own it, and when I do... IT FEELS GREAT!!!
@ Dwolfwood- Ack! You're killing me! I now feel a strange guilt about being lukewarm towards this game, like I'm ignoring a good-hearted-but-uninteresting-looking girl who just wants me to love her.
Maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas or something.
Demon's Souls = Military Basic Training. You come out of it a changed person.
Maybe if I could like that, I could like Demon's Souls too?
This really describes how Demon's Souls plays out and how the game isn't really hair pulling out hard. This game takes everything you know about video games and makes you re-shape and re-mold the way you play as if you run in with guns blazing without looking at your surroundings you are as good as dead.
If I am venturing into a new area the blood splatters/messages that other people have left can be addicting! Watching someone else die might point out a trap or a hidden bad dude out to get you, very helpful
I've logged about 30 hours so far and this game is VERY satisfying to play!!
Dude, I loved the dungeon crawling of Tobal 2! If you can enjoy that, you'll love the game. No amount of hype should kill the experience in the slightest.
This game is a good-hearted, but executioner's mask wearing girl who will spank you till you're raw before you ask for more... Should be at the top of your Christmas list!
My biggest regret with Shadow of the Colossus was that I didn't buy it the day it came out. Games are always enjoyed best at release, even if they're timeless like these.
This game is a masterpiece. It does an amazing job of making you feel outnumbered and alone, all while giving you resources to help collude with other players against the game. It's also amazing that SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
The game even uses that community against you in the form of the Old Monk who hijacks a black or blue phantom and uses them as the boss fight for another human player.
END MAJOR SPOILER.
MINOR SPOILERS BELOW.
Now I'm going to read the comments . . . BRB
@DWolfwood - pass on 3-2. Get a good bow and work your way ahead in 4 instead. I found it a whole lot easier than 3-2, (or 1-3, for that matter, what a bitch!) plus you can drag the storm ruler back with you and use it on gargoyles and celebrity vermin. Beware of maneater at the end of 3-2. I had to use a Stone of Ephemeral eyes and summon two phantoms to beat him. Then I basically walked through 4.
@Everyone talking about grinding - I don't really like the word Grinding, even though that's what it is. I prefer to use the word farming. You're not wandering around a world map waiting for random encounters, your seeking out high-value enemies and pounding the shit out of them after casting Soul Thirst. (Hello, Sky King stage, again and again. :)
Funny you mention that, I already started doing that and got a decent bow. Now I just need to level up so I can use it lol.
Can't wait till the day I finally kick that other level's ass though... Rest assured anyone helping is getting automatic S rank, even if I do all the work lol.
And if you love this game, and have a PSP, you owe it to yourself to check out monster Hunter - Freedom unite (the newest one) is on offer on the PS Store too (in the Uk at least - £16.99! Brilliant value)
loving Demom's Souls - best RPG evar. Although my playtime is slipping to uncharted myself, but once the novelty has worn off, i know i'll be back into the Demon's Souls fray.
Great writeup. Great game.
Anti-Magic Field helps tremendously in the Latria sections.
Jim, couldn't agree with you more. Every morning when I make my rounds of gaming sites, I now search for Demon's Souls to see if anything has been written on it that I have missed. The game has consumed me....
Once again Jim you've managed to take the many shattered thoughts in my head and arrange and articulate them. That's why I love these opinion pieces of yours. Youve really hit the nail on the head, though. I knew you had to be cooking something up, every time I get on to play you're either playing or you join at some point during my session!
This is a magical game. And I know that Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 are bother STELLAR games, but I think I have to call Demon's Souls my game of the year. It is making me like gritty, dungeons crawling action again. Its a game that is as fun to talk about as it is to play!
It truly is a different kind of multiplayer experience. I love the camaraderie.
