Do you have an early copy of Demon's Souls? Been playing through it wondering what all the talk about the ghosts of other characters and unique online functionality is? You thought maybe at one point you saw a ghost trying to help you out, but it was really just a slight graphical bug. Well, there's a reason for this. The servers won't be going live until launch day, dummy!
Atlus wanted to get the word out in order to ensure that "there's as little worry, panic, confusion, mass hysteria, riots in the streets, armaggeddons, etc... as possible." It's cause they care and your getting this news because Destructoid believes in "the more you know." Who knows why you would have the game early (I know a few people that do), but you'll just have to wait until next week when the game officially launches. Then you can start pulling your hair out from difficulty and dive into the co-op. Hopefully you will actually beat the game with the help (or hindrance) of other people's ghostly memories.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm also interested in how they're gonna do matchmaking, since they said something about not being able to invite friends, if I read correctly.
So there's no real "griefing" per se, at least not in the sense of an overwhelmingly powerful player killing off noobs for kicks.
The catch is that its not hack n slash, but tactical, mixed with advanced dungeon crawling mechanics.
@All
Add me as well - PSN Magnalon. I'll probably be getting the full retail version, despite my press copies' inability to transfer my 50+ hour save... :-(
@All
Add me so we can take on some bosses. PSN Kookkui
Jesus. My birthday is the 5 th and it means nothing because this won't be out until the day after. That's my real birthday.
Ah hell sleep is for pussies anyway!
how much rpg-ing is there? levels? stats? spells? moves? or is it based only on the weapons?
and the whole dying and coming back with half health sounds kinda annoying , forcing you to use the online portion i assume?
are there towns or "side" missions, shops etc? or is it a normal story game with one path?
also how much replay value is there?
Just so you guys know, from what I have read you can NOT just jump into a buddies game, it's totally random who you team up with or try to PvP against......no server waiting room or lobbies as they want to keep the immersion of the game safe.
;)
It plays kind of like a standard action game, but is a FULL on RPG.
It contains levels, tons of statistics, "miracles" (holy spells), magic (attack spells), archery, and standard weapons.
You actually come back with MORE than half health after you pick up the "Cling Ring", which you can get about 30 minutes into the game :D. You learn to appreciate being alive, and you also learn fairly quickly the most of the game is spent with 75% health. It's a rather unique feeling of distress that many survival horror games don't emulate. I never had any problem not using the online portion to succeed: about 5 hours in everything just clicks.
There's a big hub town as well. You can engage in the occasional side mission, as there are a ton of optional bosses and loot. The hub town lets you store items (a la RE storebox), buy spells, level up, and buy equipment.
As for replay value? It's probably the most replayable game I've EVER played. First off, the level cap is 712. You'll also get new game + upon completion, and there are 2 different endings (one of which earns you an entirely new PVP mode). Every time you start a new "new game +", the game will get harder: so if you like challenge, you can keep playing. Also, coop multiplayer.
I decided to make another character entirely and go a different route, as the class/character creation system lets you make someone entirely different. If it sounds too good to be true: it is. Demon's Souls is a gem of a game. I would recommend that you rent it if you're on the fence, though, as it may not be for everyone.
Here is a cool review that gives a pretty good run down of the game and game play.

No, you can very easily just tell your friends "I'm making a blue gate at 'so and so' location" over the PSN message system, and organize it that way. Once you get used to it, it's really easy.
They also didn't add in voice chat because the lack of voice adds to the tension; not because of safety. But forcing the player to simply emote (wave hands, put up a "stop" symbol), it creates the allusion that all the different heroes come from foreign lands, and must communicate in a primal manner.
man deamons souls, way of the samurai 3, uncharted2, borderlands, brutal legend. why do they always wait till this time of year to release games? same thing happened last year. and because of it my copy of dead space is still unplayed after a year.
Really? that is GREAT to hear! The way I read it sounded weird but still very interesting to say the least, glad I'm wrong..lol
I pre-ordered the deluxe edition and I have Tuesday off...mwa ha ha!!
*licks lips in anticipation
It's not Tuesday yet.
It's completely off the hook, cannot put it down, the whole way they've approached onlione I've never seen before, it's simply the best action game or RPG I've played.
So nice to play an RPG that's not just attack attack attack attack heal attack attack. You reaqlly need tio "fight" every enemy, dodge and block, parry and counter attack - fucking brilliant.
All the different weapons with their unique fighting style to master, all the different enemies each with tells and unblockable attacks, the Bosses ! Fucking EPIC.
Buy it. Just buy it!
It is hard, but once you accept that being alive (ie not a soul) is a rare occurence, you do play most of the game as a soul, but it makes no odds, apart from the 75% (once you have cling ring) health. You do lose your collected souls when you die (alive or as soul) but they stay in your bloodstain, so all you have to do is make it back to where you died (with enemies back in place) and you collect the souls from your previous run, plus whatever you got on the way back, and if it's a lot, leg it back to the nexus to upgrade.
The first 2 hours are a test to say the least, you're under powered, don't know how to fight, (block timing is crucial) and you get your ass handed to you. However once you hit the "eureka" moment it becomes a whole heap of fun.
The online messages work really well, there's always some hint about what to expect or how to beat an enemy, however there are (on the Asian Server anyway) quite a lot of "This is Hars, Evaluate me" messages, which I don't understand, I mean, yes it is harsh, the whole game is harsh, but why do I want to press select and evaluate you, for stating the obvious?? Wierd.
But the message system, generally, is and amazing idea, that works brilliantly, I can't imagine why it's not been done before. Oh, shit and the ghosts (other people playing the same area as you) wandering around are cool as fuck! And the death recordings from peoples bloodstains!
Just get it, you need this game in your life.
Evaluating a message gives the author health, thats why there is a lot of those type of messages.
The little quick guide they give you in English is pretty breif!
