Kudos, because this is in my pile of shame, and I don't think I can amass the level of self loathing required to play this title before year end.
Seems like that's how it should be. If companies are going to moan and whine about server costs and maintenance and whatever else then scrap the online, and pour those resources into the single player game. If you make online a component to your game, then commit to it
If your PS3 is online the game force its ways on the multiplayer. People continue playing it because it's like the best game on the PS3 and have tons of replay value. The still burning MP it's just a side effect.

Having over 100 games in my backlog at the moment, this is news that will propel my ass to cracking open my copy of Demon's Souls...right after I finish Heavy Rain lol.
I lost my progress when my PS3 died because for some brainless reason, the save files are locked. Because of that, I won't be playing Demon's Souls anymore. Shame, since I really liked the game, but as far as I'm concerned, games with locked saves are incomplete/broken. (And no, PS+ doesn't fix anything.)
I'll be picking up Dark Souls on the 360 because save files actually work on there, and because they'll probably lock the PS3 saves again.

Also, that being said, Demon's Souls IS a great game, and it's cool that the servers will stay alive a bit longer.

It's locked because people would just upload character files online, and everyone would have characters with ideal stats, builds, and max items for various levels of pvp. It's essentially an anti-cheat measure.

The online was incredible in this game. While I would have liked voice chat, the silent camaraderie fit the game's atmosphere perfectly. It'll be a sad day when this game closes, but even the single-player experience is well worth it.
I just started playing a couple of weeks ago (hearing that the servers were ending in early October) and can't imagine playing this game w/o the online interactions. Having your bacon saved by a helpful warning message - and even better, leaving one of your own and learning that it was recommended - makes you feel like we're all in this together.
Still plowing through it bit by bit, but glad to hear that the full experience isn't going away just yet for all my fellow late adopters.

Just beat this game last month... after being scared to play it for a year. For $20 it's a no-brainer guys - buy it NOW. Just make sure you have the Demon's Souls Wiki within arms length when you finally start it up.
I MIGHT actually buy this, but Dark Souls is just around the corner so I'm wondering what the point is honestly.
I bought with confidence. After a week of failure I traded it in for GameStop store credit in shame.

Profile locking would have been an extremely easy fix for that. Besides, Dark Souls is coming to the 360, too, and you can transfer saves between profiles on there in no time flat if you have a PC. I won't be doing this, but tha doesn't mean it can't (and won't) be done.
Also, there are already a ton of hacks done in Demon's Souls from what I've heard. Jailbreaking didn't help anything.

The point is that it's awesome! Different setting, different monsters. Why not get it for $20? You would be preparing yourself for Dark Souls WHILE playing an already excellent game.

I had just started getting into this game in a significant way before getting the fucking abominable YLOD, which resulted in my PS3 sitting in an electronics shop somewhere for nearly half a year. I thought that the servers would be closed by the time my PS3 was returned, and that I'd just have to move onto Dark Souls without finishing one of my most enthralling gaming experiences of the last five years. I'm sooooo glad that's not the case : D

Diablo's auction house and Demon Souls' bonfires are examples of always-on DRM I would get behind. If only Ubisoft weren't such pricks.

@pedrovay2003: The same thing happened to me, just look up Gilksy on youtube. It's usually an easy 20min fix and then all you need is an ethernet cable to transfer locked saves.

You know they could do what the pc community does all the time and let the community flip the bill >.>. Servers stay active and Atlus no longer has to pay. I'd have no clue how this would work with Demon's Souls but it seems better then just completely cutting it off. If Demon's Souls is as popular as people say it is then letting the community take control from here on out sounds right.
I'm all about the Dark souls....... Fuck demons. But seriously, buy Demons Souls. Best $20 ever. Unless you can't pay attention to your surroundings. Then the demons will fuck you.

I held off on a purchase for the longest time because I wasn't sure whether this game was going to be too 'hardcore' for my tastes, and I'm certainly not willing to blow $60 on a new game I'm not sure about (like Dark Souls).
So I finally bit the bullet... though now I'm getting distracted by the quite enjoyable Saints Row 2, which I picked up on that day as well.

Fantastic game all around in every sense of the word. I finished the game and didn't do a New Game+ because it's pretty crazy. But I definitely enjoyed it the first go.

@pedrovay2003: i know how you feel, my ps3 died after playing DS more than a month.
Luckily i've started to play it again and i have a blast.
But having ps+ helps: you can save copy protected savegames to the cloud, since a few months you can even do it automatically on sheduled hours
