Demo of MLB 2K8 now available on XBL, AWOL from PSN photo

Today, a demo of MLB 2K8 went up on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Just like the demo of MLB 08: The Show that Sony put up on the PSN a few weeks ago, this demo allows you to play the first three innings of a game between last year’s AL and NL champions, the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies, respectively. The game is a Red Sox home game, so it takes place in the hallowed Fenway Park, the oldest stadium in baseball.

Typically, content for multiplatform games will hit both consoles in the same week. In fact, Ben Brinkman — the executive producer on MLB 2K8noted during a conference call that PSN and XBL demos had been submitted and would be “out soon”. That was two weeks ago, and we’ve finally got the Xbox Live demo two days after the full game came out. Doesn’t it always seem weird when that happens?

Curiously, we’ve seen neither hide nor hair of a PSN demo; it was nowhere to be found in this week’s update from Sony. I wonder if this is 2K’s fault — as in, they were late in getting the demo to Sony — or if it’s an issue on Sony’s side — as in, their certification process is taking longer than expected. Or could it perhaps be a nefarious (but smart) attempt by Sony to keep the attention on their game and away from 2K8?

Either way, there’s nothing mentioned about that in the press release (see for yourself after the jump). Hopefully, it’ll be up on the PSN next week; I’m sure there are many PS3 owners that are itching to try out MLB 2K8, especially because they can choose between it and MLB 08: The Show.

Lastly, I wanted to make note of a funny discrepancy in the press release. The very first sentence talks about fans who “eagerly await the launch” of the game, yet it was released on Tuesday, March 4th. It’s not as bad as EA’s Army of Two gaffe, but still, 2K Sports could stand to hire a copy editor...

I would just like to say it's so refreshing to see regular sports game posts on the front page. Thanks for that.

Sony may not want to have a product that is in direct competition with their own direct product. If your Sony, why would you want your competition to get any attention for their product?

Sorry, for the grammatical error in the previous post. I agree with Camtub, always good to see sports stories here.

Oooh, power-glove, I didn’t even think of that, and it totally makes sense. How silly of me.

Okay, the post has been updated to include that, because it was too smart of a thought to not put in there. For that, I forgive your minor grammar gaffe, power-glove.

With The Show available on the PS3 I honestly don't think 2k8 will be terribly missed.

I've got some 360 buds that are tempted to join the darkside on account of The Show alone.

@jdub28: Unfortunately, I don’t own a Wii, so I have no way of doing a review of the Wii version of 2K8 even if I had a copy of it. As for a review, well, IGN didn’t seem to be too fond of it...

Samit I'm most likely picking up The Show. What are you going with?? We gotta get the same game man so I can whip that ass in baseball. Though both of us will be playing the Yankees seeing as we both are Yankee fans.

I'll tell you what, I'll let you be the Phillies..lol.

I would probably go with The Show if I had a PS3...I always enjoyed the PS2 and even the PSP installments (the PSP versions were perfect for some quick pick-up-and-play Road to the Show action). So, since I'm a 360 guy, I picked up 2K8 today, ignoring some performance issues with framerates in fielding situations, etc. What can I say? I have baseball fever, which is funny because it's probably my third or fourth favorite sport.

After giving Cricket a go on my 360, I've decided not to play any more hit-the-bal-with-a-thin-piece-of-wood-games :-)

Baseball, golf ( and bowling ) should be reserved for the Wii :-)
