Demo Jimpressions: Syndicate

Demo Jimpressions: Syndicate photo

Boy, that Syndicate sure is a first-person shooter!

That is my initial thought after giving Syndicate's co-op demo a spin. When I say that, I don't mean to imply I'm one of those folk who hate a game just because it's bears the name of an older game in a different genre. I say that because, right now, there's nothing else to say about it.

That really is all Syndicate's demo tells you. You have three loadouts to choose from, with bog-standard weaponry including shotguns, assault rifles and sniper rifles. You can heal and revive your friends, and from there you just ... shoot. You shoot stuff in very grey environments until there's nothing left to shoot, then you move on to the next grey area and shoot more stuff.

The action is fairly typical of the genre. It feels weighty, but rather uninspired. There's a shallow scoring system to provide a hint of competition between players, but there's really nothing you've not seen before. You just trudge forward and shoot at enemies as they wander erratically around the map, occasionally waiting in a checkpoint room to resupply, before trudging forward and shooting some more.

Some players have since been saying they enjoy the tactical element of the game, but I'm not seeing it yet. So far the only "tactical" element is breaching -- one player breaches a target to weaken it, while the others provide support. This contextual command is also used for healing and reviving players. It's a cute little add-on, but it's hardly "tactical."

This is, of course, merely one co-op level, and I'm informed by those who have played more levels that it's one of the weakest. I sincerely hope there's more to it than this, because the sample gameplay isn't exciting. In fact, it reminds me very much of last year's mediocre Codemasters offering, Bodycount. If the demo is indicative of the overall experience, then Syndicate is looking very much like just another forgettable first-person shooter.

I sincerely hope the demo isn't indicative of the overall experience, and that somebody in marketing just made a very poor choice of level.

I hope so to.
Bad demos for good games have happened before.

Wow. That fucking sucks. I don't even want to try the demo after the bodycount remark. I will though and ill check out reviews, just....fuck. Oh well won't know till the final product hits and it is Starbreeze making it. They've been at it awhile too.

This game sounds like a shitty version of Star Wars Republic Commando. That game had awesome tactical group control and was just a fun FPS. Someone needs to get to making a sequel to that.... *sigh* damn it.

Grey on grey shooting? I'll demo it but my hopes aren't too high.

Max and Anthony seemed to like what they played. Maybe it was the laser weapons and flamethrowers. There were upgrades/schematics too, right?
Perhaps the game is deeper than the demo lets on. That's my hope, anyway.

I'm gonna give it a whirl later. I've been having a lot of difficulty drumming up any interest in this, despite loving the original on my computer so many years ago.

you get on app in the demo and it is backfire. When your being suppressed you can backfire the generals and seargants for a moment to run away heal up, or any other sheninegans you may want to pull. The skill tree and weapon research tabs are mostly all locked, but they do give you a decent amount of points for skills. I got infinite sprint and faster breaching. the game has multiple ways to reach an objective with your team each having a different roll. For example, early on in the demo you face a tank that continues to fire in your direction, all of you could go around and probably have a low score, or two of you could flank and the other two could cause a distraction while the two flankers turn breachers. There does seem a lot to do and we havent even seen any of the apps yet. Sadly like Jim, console players aren't used to doing many things at once and during the demo I found myself holding off multiple enemies while rebooting one of my co-op partners, and sliding around all at the same time. That right there is the b button, left bumper, left trigger, and right trigger, all being used. This game will surely be overlooked as a console game, but PC gamers will find a lot to like.

Plan of success: take vibrant, revered turn-based franchise, turn it into a workmanlike modern combat FPS, try to sell on name-brand value.

I eagerly anticipate Call of Duty: Facebook edition, once casual titles completely take over. That is all.

A single player portion where the game actually explains how it's supposed to be played would have been nice. I was pretty confused my first match and I still don't know how to throw grenades.

It's a mildly amusing distraction, if fairly monotone. I'll play a couple more matches, but I'm not expecting my opinion to change, just to be reinforced.

This sounds nothing like Syndicate. Argh.

Also, this:

"I'm informed by those who have played more levels that it's one of the weakest."

always baffles me.

Check out the videos Max and Anthony Carboni did for their Rev3 shows:

It looks and sounds far better than what you're describing from the demo. I'm still pretty confident and I'm looking forward to checking it out tonight.

Grey on grey shooting? Now I can hit the 2ms refresh rate my monitor/TV people promised me!

I will try the demo out but if I think it's horrible and lackluster, I will not be buying because you can't rent games anymore in my town as Blockbuster and 2 Rogers video shut down :( You also can't buy a launch game if the demo is shitty and "hope" the full version is awesome, that is a $67.18 leap of faith.

Is it wrong or ignorant of me to partially write off any game bearing the EA mushroom stamp?

I hate those bastards so much I dont ever plan on finishing the Mass Effect series because of it. At this point I should just swear an oath to never buy a game they publish ever again but its not like thats gonna stop the bastards from making shallow games that have no vision other than pleasing CoD bros.

Everything about this game sounds like it should be right up my alley but after seeing a few trailers and the preview that Max and Carboni did I just cant get hype.

Can't say I'm surprised at all, really. If they're going to resurrect a game, do it properly not strip it of everything and replace it by name only and in a half assed fashion.

'Nuff sayd.'

so you guys looking forward to syndicate are looking forward to it because of it's multiplayer? if starbreeze's past titles are any indication of the quality of multiplayer then it will not be good (see chronicles of riddick). it's not their strong suit, single player is so hopefully the game delivers on that front.

Honestly though, I recall Syndicate Wars being a lot about simple "You shoot stuff"* as well, but blue was the dominant color. Only difference was the point of view.

*Other stuff included driving around in cars and blowing up buildings.

I played it. Yawn. It's not bad or anything, and I like the healing thingy. I kept looking for interactive things to hack to gain an advantage, but I didn't see anything interesting. I even unlocked things and played with a few abilities, but the hacking motif seems like mostly wasted potential.

Jim. Think of your favorite game in the world. Think of something crazy like Toe Jam & Earl or Kirby. Now imagine a game for that hasn't been released in many many years. Now imagine they release an FPS called Toe Jam & Earl that has absolutely nothing to do with the original games.

That's how Shadowrun fans felt and that's probably how Syndicate fans will feel.

Sounds a quick cash grab, "We need a shooter to fill in the dead early year season. I know, lets just grab one of our old franchises and make it into a medium budget shooter. Brand recognition should help it sell a few more copies."

Next year, Crusader.

Let's all judge the game based on one level of the co-op mode, which is only half of the core experience at best. The single player seems to be more of a focus (although less marketed) on this game, which I'm all for.

I'm still excited, the screen shots and videos have made the game look a lot more than just 'gray' like everyone saw in the demo. I'm interested to see where the story goes, and the demo confirmed my one concern, the shooting.

The shooting is solid, the AI is reasonably good, and the guns feel good too. I was playing the co-op mission solo, so I didn't beat it due to difficulty, but I enjoyed what I played. From everything I've seen and heard, the demo isn't an accurate representation of the game.

But this is Jim, what does that nobody know. The guy probably walked 3 steps, shot a few rounds and started typing. Then gave Amy 9/10.

People will buy this for single player. Poor choice for a demo. Show the story, goofs. Why do developers do this? I loved Starbreeze's past games, but I won't touch this without a single player demo until it's $10.

to be perfectly honest, i didn't give a shit about this game until today. after playing a few rounds with a friend online this evening, i've cancelled my pre-order for operation raccoon city and pre-ordered this one instead. i'm lovin' the hell out of what i've played so far. to me, it's like a cross between left 4 dead and deus ex: human revolution. give it another go with a few peeps on multiplayer, jim, and check out the rpg-esque upgrades.
