Defining H2O the BioShock way

8:58 PM on 04.30.2007, Jordan Grim Devore 28 comments

     Interview
A great atmosphere is something all video games should strive for, and by the look of it, BioShock will capture the decrepit underwater city look quite nicely. This is all possible thanks to some fancy looking water effects and the power of the Unreal Engine 3 as seen in the above video (also viewable in HD).

Believe it or not, The Cult of Rapture even has a whole interview devoted entirely to BioShock's in-game water. It's an interesting read if you want to learn more about the technical side of the game, but the best piece of info to come out of the Q&A, bar none, is:

Will bodies float?

JJ: Yes! One of our programmers, Josh Downer, actually created a buoyancy system that works for all of the objects you interact with in the game, not just dead bodies.

August simply can't come soon enough.

@WiiSucks
I think my computer is your computer's little brother. Athlon 64x2 4000, 1024mb, 350gb HD, and Nvidia 6150 graphics also. I mostly use it for school projects and ahem "video" collection (I'm running out of DVD-R's to hide!!!), I haven't played any current games on it, but it runs emulators fine.

That water is going to show up at next year's Oscars.

@wiisucks,
You can't play E1 single player because its more graphically demanding than deathmatch. usually, multiplayer uses less visual assets to save space for network and gameplay mechanics. Something like that...
Right now im running a p4 3.0 with a 6800... I think ill get it for the 360, thank you very much..

I really never knew how many different types of water developers can create. The transition between dripping water, a light flood, and water that's gushing into the room is something that is rarely seen in a game. Most developers just make water and that's it, but the developers of BioShock made water a living, breathing thing.

Do they really need 14 questions devoted to just water? That being said, looks amazing. I'll be buying this game despite my lack of a 360, stealing someone's system to play this baby.

I'd be more interested if they didn't release so many tech demos and actually showed us some of the cool gameplay they're talking about.

The game looks cool and there's no doubting the water effects' excellence, but didn't Half-Life 2 also have bodies and objects that interacted realistically with water? I seem to recall having to use some air-filled plastic canisters in water to solve a certain puzzle.

You are probably right Ryan. I'm sure there are games that have done floating objects before, but it's just nice to know that BioShock will too. Half the fun of shooters (for me anyway) is screwing around with the physics engine.

Bioshock is a nightmare wrapped up in a snuggly warm cotton pull-over, Oh sweet bioshock when will you hold me tight?

oh and the HL2 water thing was in the airboat level where you needed to make a ramp, other than that nothing truly special with water... Crysis might have some waterish things but Bioshock takes the mother f**kin cake.. and what a sweet cake it will be
