Defense of the Ancients game being made by Valve? photo

Defense of the Ancients is an incredibly popular custom scenario for Warcraft III. It's so big that entire games have been created based on it. Jon St. John is a voice actor most notably recognized as the titular Duke Nukem. The latter is now claiming that he just returned from doing voice work for the former. Here's the tweet, see what stands out to you.

Had a great time in Seattle last week recording for DotA. The guys at ValveSoftware are awesome! Going to PAX? Might see you there - Sept3-5

Valve? Keep calm, this actually isn't odd at all. Valve announced that they had hired DoTA developer Icefrog in order to make a game that would make DoTA players very happy. I'm thinking that a DoTA game would make DoTA players very happy. There have, of course already been a few DoTA style games released in the form of League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth, but this could definitely be the ultimate DoTA game considering the support that Valve puts behind all of its games.

So, who wants it?

I don't see what there is to gain from making another DoTA game. HoN is already at it's peak right now and is the only one good enough to actually be able to charge money for it's product. DoTA remains a mod and League of Legends is free. I forget the name of the other one but it's already pretty much dead.

I still don't even know what DoTA is. Is it just like tower defense?

I played DotA for ages with my friends, TD's just got boring.
Then we found out about the HoN/LoL Beta's and me and my friends all managed to get in. HoN is way better then LoL, which has a more kiddo style to it. Now they're on retail and I have to say, Valve making a DotA game? I keep my eyes peeled!

I really enjoy HoN and I think it is a rather fun game to play, being a supporter of Valve too I can see only good things coming from this.

inb4LoLvsHoN etc etc etc.

Though valve makes an excellent product, do we really need another dota. With season one for league of legends rolling along now I personally don't see any reason for valve to dedicate time into making another version of dota. Riot games is doing an excellent job updating/adding new champions. I and I can only assume others don't have the want or time for another dota.

I love playing Heroes of Newerth and won't be leaving that even if a super good SC2 DotA comes along, but I'm definitely greatly interested in such a game with the support of Valve behind it.
Ultimatelly, though, I would love for Valve to buy S2 (HoN creators).

there is no need for another one dota game. though valva has great pedigree, but hon and lol covers it all: lol for noobs like me and hon for hardcore dota players so against whom will valve compete ? free noob friendly lol or more hardcore non free hon?

PLEASE VALVE. STOP DOING THIS TO US. You can get on with your new IPs after you freaking finish what you started ;_; I mean, I'll still support another Valve game but it's just frustrating to see them not only deny the next iteration of Half-Life's existence but choose all above it.

@ avydos,

"Ultimatelly, though, I would love for Valve to buy S2"

They already hired the DotA modders.. not sure what the point would be in hiring S2.

@runtheplacered, the point would be of having a dedicated, separate team that has don all the development and have the experience (more so of just one guy) and just add a few people to their team and back them with lots of cash. This way, the rest of the Valve guys can focus on bringing us the pink elephant in the room :)

Can't say anything else. 10/10 underrated game, sadly.

I wonder if this will just be another Source port like Alien Breed to Alien Swarm. If so then it'll probably be free like Alien Swarm and that's always welcome.

you guys are so silly, this is obviously DOTA, defense of the alps. the long awaited single player expansion to DOD, day of defeat.

only joking, but what if this was just some completely different game that just happened to abbreviate to DOTA?

Eh, I never saw the point in HoN, but I tried (and liked!) LoL because it had actually something new to offer.

As for this, every DotA player knew about it, but a serious voice actor working on the game? Now THAT is sweet. After reading this article I formed a mental image of a DotA game in the Source Engine. Can't get it out of my head :(!

@ZRB I didn't mean to come off as snarky or anything like that. I was just saying that this is valve. They work slowly and last time they worked with modders TF2 was the outcome, which was drastically different to TF classic. I love TF2 with my heart but it's very different from TF classic.

I'd like to provide a little insight on to what exactly Jon St.John was recording for.

DotA has been using the old quake 3 voice and unreal tournament overs like "Triple Kill!" "Holy Shit.." "Rrrrrampage.". St.John was most likely recording for those same lines, which is perfect fit imho.

What the fuck is with voice actors? Why does every single announcement/leak come from them? Don't they sign NDA? Do they have no professional experience? Or are they just that dense?

I noticed in the Alien Swarm SDK if you open the model viewer, under the View tab there is a literally an option that says exactly "DotA View Mode" that give the model a locked isometric perspective.

So yeah.

I think that if they do something DotAesque, they will definitely call it DotA. The best way to penetrate a sub genre is through the acquisition of an established title. Hiring Icefrog provides them that. Demigod was compared to the original DotA. So was HoN and LoL. It's pretty awkward to compare DotA to DotA. It'll only come off as comparing a beta to the gold version.

If I'm right, then that would make Alien Swarm their first steps into polishing a top down version of their Source engine. Now they have a solid top down camera mechanic, tile mapping, a procedural AI director, class specific bot intelligence, and Google Sketchup integration.

Or maybe they could just go "Nah... let's just finish Episode 3 guys!"

If it's anything like Team Fortress it would be pretty bad ass. As long as it isn't some isometric view point and more like a FPS with swords and magic it could really set the bar to something different.

So.. are they doing this game completely based on the mod, or is it going to be just similar in gameplay? I mean, I'm pretty sure there would be copyright issues if it's the former..

I play LoL, and will probably stick with LoL unless there's some drastic differences between the two. Plus LoL is free yet still fun.

If they are making another dota variant, I'd like to see them do something new. The only one I've played is LoL, and while I did/do enjoy it, it gets old for me because of the single game mode. While the characters are interesting and seem different, they generally end up playing in a few specific ways, depending on the build.
I think the genre has a lot of potential, just needs someone to start innovating again, which Lol and Hon don't seem to be doing (not that theres much wrong with that, would just be nice if someone did. Which would be the ideal way for valve to step in).

If its from Valve, its going to get high-quality support for awhile and so far, I have enjoyed every Valve title ignoring L4D (Not L4D2) which felt like a really bad mod imo. Yeah, I'm in, but if they are going to make a DOTA-like game, i want a few twists in the mechanics to make it addicting AND fresh.

HoN and LoL are already two established and well-received DOTA variants (One is free and the other is a retail experience), they have some large shoes to fill if they want to impress.

Dota would be great as first person, I think. Like monday night combat, only not incredibly simple and made for a 4 button console controller.

Really hoping it's source engine dota with classes, skills, a counter-strike like economy, and is a bit more accessible than heroes of newerth. I missed demigod completely, and league of legends is too microtransaction infested for me to get into.

And king kong five: dota is competitive tower defense. 3 lanes, one team versus the other. I kill the mobs moving past the tower to get skills and money, spend the money, train the skills, and then we try to kill each other.

Generally, it's 5 on 5, with 3 lanes of creeps moving around, and you spend the first ten minutes farming up money, and then form into groups and start roaming the map trying to kill each other and attack enemy towers. Whoever runs out of towers first can get their command center attacked, whoever loses that first loses the game.

Sure, why not. Other games like Demigod, League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth don't know how to support their playerbase outside USA. Valve does.
