Dedicated servers are coming to the 360 with Section 8 photo

This is a big deal. Possibly? Server things and gizmos and clankertickers don't usually make that much of a difference to the general way we play games, but as something new this is a very interesting bit of information. Section 8, the upcoming FPS featuring skydiving from space, will be the first 360 game to feature user-created dedicated servers to the platform.

How will this be possible? Players can download a program onto their computer that will allow them create the servers for the game. While playing on the servers players will be able to compete with up to 32 others, which is evidently twice as many as usual on said servers. So I'm not sure how important this actually is, but it's a bit more interesting than the last news we did on the game.

Rainbow Six: Vegas has dedicated servers, although they are just dedicated 360's. This is pretty good news though if the game turns out good.

Well... from what I understand a dedicated server is just a server you own and have control over... such as owning your own Counterstrike Server. If that's correct, and the 360 allows anyone and everyone to make their own dedicated servers... then why would people bother playing other people's server when they can just make their own? Everyone would have their own server to play on and games will just remain empty. Or am I missing something here?

Well that sounds kind of cool. That, or Microsoft's just not wanting to shell out money for more servers.

It was usually that 360 haters which claim that live only runs on p2p servers when in fact some games are p2p and others are hosted by dedicated servers such as EA's stuff.

I think some games work better with dedicated servers from companies while others are better for p2p

Kalmah, that would be true if everybody wanted to host a dedicated server. The average XBL user hasn't gotten over the fact that homosexuals and black people exist yet, I doubt they'd know what a dedicated server even is :P

I guess it's a big thing for console gamers, but not for PC gamers.

on a side note, does that pic looks similar to Starcraft or is it just me?

so it's an online game that doesn't just disappear when the developer stops supporting it? it's about time.

@Kalmah

It means that a server farm can host dedicated servers without using a 360 and without having to actually be in game. A player could of course run a dedicated server from his PC and use his 360 to play the game or host a normal server on his 360 where once he turns off his 360 game goes off as well.

It's a big deal for having it on a console, yes. I consider most online gaming a joke on consoles because of the lack of this. However I doubt most people have a connection at home that can handle 32 people anyways.

hmm, the only new thing about this is being abel to use your PC as the host and then still play, tons of online games let you turn your system into a dedicated host, hell you even get a trophy for it in warhawk

Yes, this makes a big difference. You know all those games where you have a terrible connection, and others dont and they kick your ass? How about the host issue, where the host of the game has a massive advantage over the others?

Dedicated Servers minimize these issues. There is no 'host', everyone has to connect the server via their internet connection. And while some people will always have a worse connection to a server than others, you can choose your server to try and get the best connection possible. Also, a dedicated server has additional advantages, such as the larger number of players, since the server isnt actually running the game, just processing player movements and actions and sending them on. You can also use the server to fine-tune your game-types and such, or do more interesting things (low gravity etc). Finally, you can ban people from servers you control; this saves you from relying on MS or Sony to do it for you.

I get sick of games of Halo 3, where people are teleporting around because I'm in New Zealand and the host is American, and go play Tf2 on pc, which has many good dedicated servers. Its great that Section 8 will offer this, even though I'll play it on PC which would have had them anyway.

Gears of Wars multiplayer was basically ruined by Host Advantage so yes...dedicated servers are a big plus.

@KaL: You sure? The story says Section 8 will be the "first 360 game to feature user-created dedicated servers to the platform."

Another reason to be stoked about this game.

Although there are already games on the 360 with dedicated servers. Left 4 Dead being the most notably. Not user-created dedicated servers, but dedicated nonetheless.

Kalmah: Difference between Gears and Section8 are that Gears has a host run a server from the xbox playing the game, whereas this would have users make servers on their PCs. I dont know where host advantages come from, if its just bad design, or if its a server thing, but this probably wouldnt have it.

Roager: Host advantage comes from playing the game on the host machine, thus you have 0 ping. Other players will have bigger ping because they will have to connect to your machine.
A dedicated server, as the name implies, means that the machine hosting the game isn't used to play it, just to host it. Thus no one has 0 ping so no one has an advantage.

More than anything, I just want to get some hands-on time with this game. It looks like a lot of fun, and although I enjoy the RPG-lite elements that have gone into some recent FPSs, it'll be nice to play a game that is largely objective-based and isn't Halo.

I've always wondered why I pay $50 a year and Microsoft never pitches in dedicated servers, even for their big games like Gears and Halo.

You get a Gold Trophy for running a dedicated server for 4 hours on Warhawk.

Soo the real question to me is whether or not the downloadable program needed to host is free. I guess the game being good is also a big question. The trailer was decent enough.

Too bad they'll all be empty. The game is horrible. I played it last week and it was one of the slowest most bland shooters I've ever touched. I had real high hopes for this game but it was just complete and utter shit.
