Decline in game sales unrelated to quality of titles photo

If you were thinking of blaming the lack of stellar titles this summer for the considerable drop in year-over-year sales in the games industry, EEDAR's Jesse Divinich would probably urge you to rethink it.

In his most recent column at IndustryGamers, Divinich compares the quality ratings of games (using "EEDAR Quality," described as being similar to other review score aggregators) and finds that while the top 20 games so far this year are ever-so-slightly lower in score, games in general are up 7%. Not only that, but there are 13% more games so far this year compared to 2008, so it isn't for a lack of available content.

Well, so much for that theory. He also takes a look at hardware and estimates that, while purchases are declining, they would likely make a small dent in the damage being done to software sales.

Maybe we're feeling the effects of the recession after all.

No one likes to pay for 60 dollar games in this economy. I only buy must have games at full which are far and few between these days. Otherwise I wait for price drops.

I'm not saying the economy isn't at least somewhat responsible, but this argument seems like total bullshit. He just throws up a crappy little table and makes a claim. Review score aggregates are only one facet of quality. They say nothing of selling power. Note that he does nothing to tell us what EEDAR's top 20 games are, because he knows his argument is flawed. If we saw the list people would be wondering where 2009's GTA IV, Super Smash Bros. and Metal Gear Solid are. There are franchises that have selling power irrespective of review scores. There is a quality about them that exists beyond their critical acclaim. Its an expected franchise quality that gives the game added value

I bought 12 games in the first two years of my PS3. Last 8-10 months, I bought just 2 games, one of which was a bugdget title, guilty as charged.

@ NeoSamurai

Argument is far from flawed. I didn't even bother to approach that angle, I am saving that for a different article.

But you are correct. 2009 had DS GTA, SFIV, Killzone2, MLB 09 The Show. 2008 had GTA, MGS, Smash Bros, and PSP God of War.

This is bullshit. What the fuck has there been this entire year besides RE5?

The only games I've seen that are worth buying full price this year were RE5 and Killzone 2.

Nothing else has been worth my 60 bucks, at least so far.

It's pretty obvious why game sales are going down

people don't have as much money and therefore, don't have as much money to go out and spend on things like entertainment.

Everything I want is coming out Q1 of 2010, that plus the econ. makes it so I don't buy stuff now (bought two games in the last 9 months btw).
