Deck 13: Demand is there for console RPGs photo

Games like Venetica don't come to consoles very often. The dungeon-crawling, loot-laden, "Western" style RPG is something usually reserved for PC, with only Ascaron's Sacred 2 really giving Xbox 360 and PS3 owners a slice of Diablo-esque action. Deck 13, however, believes this shall change soon, which is why Venetica will be hitting the 360 when it finally releases outside of Germany.

"I'm sure that consoles are going to see a lots of RPGs like Venetica in the near future because demand is there," explains creative director Jan Klose. "In fact, Venetica is perfect entertainment for consoles, being easily accessible with stunning visuals and a very intuitive controller layout. We were very happy about the opportunity to design a game for both PC and Xbox360. GUI and controls were developed very individually, and I am sure that they are going to satisfy both parties!"

Okay, so Venetica is coming to PC and Xbox 360, but what about PS3? Any chance of a release in future?

"We and dtp entertainment, the publisher, decided to focus on PC and Xbox 360 first and to finish these in best quality," he answers. "When we have finished these, we'll negotiate possibilities for other platforms."

And while we're at it, when are getting a release date?

"I'm confident that it is going to be announced pretty soon."

@ mkshiranui,

"Right. Sound familiar?"

No.. not really. I'm trying to figure out what this is a jab at. The game is done. In fact the game is out in Germany. Why are you so skeptical of this company? ... trying to figure out your angle here.

I'm just tired of the "We'll get it into stores soon" rhetoric because it ends up being an excuse to delay the game. Some developers are good at announcing a release date and sticking to it, but most aren't.

It's just a minor gripe, really.

Think about it, It seems like WRPGS use more buttons and hotkeys and thus work well with a keyboard. Game controllers don't have much buttons, unless you can plug a keyboard to your console.

I think RPGs tend not to be reflex intensive, so on consoles you could always adopt a dial wheel interface like Mass Effect or Prototype, that would solve most hot key mapping problems(you can also slow down or pause the game while a dial wheel is displayed, if neccessary).

They ahould really stop doing it wrong.

There is never demand for new IP. How can there be? No one knows what the new IP is. People are attracted to a good game, and suddenly everyone assumes that the reason is the genre.

For a new IP to succeed, it needs to create it's own demand out of nothing. There was never any demand for Pokemon until the public found out Pokemon was awesome. Halo actually had a very negative E3 reception but after it came out it was discovered that it was awesome. Then it was bought. And there is no way the Sims was demanded in advance; no one could imagine a game like the Sims to demand it in the first place.

So, until I hear why this game deserves to be purchased rather than Oblivion, I cannot understand the point of hyping it.

(P.S. Really want a Touhou port though. Also really would appreciate the Destructoid editors doing a Touhou special; it is the greatest "indie" game ever made.)

Well I could be upset they're not thinking of the ps3 first too, but I'm cool with it. I got way too many games taking precedence and the delay could possibly give me added extras as well as give me time to read the reviews of the 360/PC version... I could also buy it for my PC but that would be just silly.

Looking forward to this one. More western RPGs please.

From what I've seen, I really hate JRPGs.

@Hcapt

Halo had all kinds of pre-release hype. It was only the reaction to Xbox exclusivity that bummed people out.

Although I agree with you in general that the biggest hits create their own demand, I don't think Deck 13 is wrong to say there's demand for console WRPGs. There aren't very many of them out there, but the ones that get made are met with enthusiasm, and I can't help but think their sales reflect a larger demand than is being met right now.

The genre thing is bullshit. The demand is there for things that are genuinely interesting no matter what your genre. Look at scribblenauts, who would've thought a new IP puzzle game would get so much pre-release press love? Is the industry banging on about puzzle games being the new shit? No.

In Venetica's case, the story, setting, characters and the gameplay description sound compelling. So long as it delivers on that promise and gamers hear about it I'm sure it will do well.

You're comparing apples to iguanas. Scribblenauts is something that's a lot more likely to appeal to casuals, both due to being on the DS as well as because of, that's right, its genre. Both these things also reduce development cost greatly, completely changing the standard for what makes it a success.

Western RPGs are geared more toward the hardcore by default, which means you're going to need more advanced gameplay mechanics and more advanced graphics in order to attract an audience, amping the budget up dramatically. The numbers you need to reach in order to break even are also much higher. Whether or not the market has room for another game in the genre is something that legitimately needs to be considered.

I'm not comparing anything. I'm using the example of scribblenauts to illustrate that the genre of game is not a main cause of it's success. The puzzle market on the DS is plenty crowded. But Scribblenauts is doing well because it is an interesting product that is being marketed well.

The 'market' is in reality a whole bunch of individual gamers. Individuals don't choose to buy a game or not because of it's genre. No one says, you know what, I'm not buying MW2 because I already have the first MW.

That's a loaded argument. Nobody ever said genre was the "main" cause of success of anything. The only thing being disputed is that demand will always be there for anything of quality, which is what you claimed.
