It just goes to show that Americans will still have their Christmas -- and games -- regardless of any downturn of the economy. Sales hit a massive $5 billion in December. Gamasutra says that's equal to the games sales of the entire year of 1997!
I don't have to tell you what Americans bought in December, but I will anyway: over 3 million Nintendo DS units and 2.15 million Wii systems. Microsoft has a pretty merry Christmas with 1.44 million Xbox 360s sold, too. As for Sony, the PSP outsold the PS3: 1 million vs. 726,000.
Games? You know how it went. WiiPlay made it again at the top. How the hell does this keep happening? The Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: World at War took 2nd place, and the PS3 version took 9th. The only guitar game in the top ten was Guitar Hero: World Tour, for the Wii.
As far as software goes for 2008, it was almost all Nintendo titles: Wii Play, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: City Folk, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The top ten was filled out by manly games like GTA IV (both consoles), Call of Duty: World at War, and Gears of War 2. The top ten was totally devoid of music/guitar games. Surprised?
Predictions for January: Um... I don't know. Skate 2 is big? [shrugs]
No surprise that WiiPlay was top. It came with a controller! And I could've sworn for the longest time it was $30, so it was like buying a controller and getting a free game. Not anymore, I guess.

Also, Jonathan isn't going to like that pic. Why not a madden pic with 'ugh'...Then you'd offend Samit...Maybe Gears? ohhh, not 'casual' enough.
If you ever SEE WiiSports or WiiPlay on the list, IGNORE IT. They count wiisports even though it COMES with the fucking system, and they count wiiplay even though you get it when you buy the damn remote. Kinda a bullshit way to say your games are selling.
And is it me, or the way the Wii sells, shouldn't 1 in ever 5 people in America have one now? I have loads of friends and maybe 2 of them have one. And the ones that have them, never fucking play it. I owned mine for over year, turned it on once when I bought it. Finally sold it to some lady who wanted it for her kids, for 150 bucks. Just to get rid of it.
Please people, counting the Wii as a game system would be like saying a bike is the new sports car.
Not saying there's something wrong with the PS3, but you seem rather threatened and that's the lowest seller so...Well I'm jumping to conclusions.
You don't need to try to and disprove NPD with anecdotal evidence, it's pathetic.
Also to counter, a LOT of my non-gaming friends have Wiis, and use them Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wii Fit.
I'm going to go on a limb and guess that Wii Play will be in the top 10 for January too.
I beg you, and pick up a copy of RE4Wii, Zach and Wiki, and Okami while you're at it.
Truer words were never spoken!! Throw No More Heroes into that list, also.
don't get me wrong, i LOVE Nintendo. I'm just an old school gamer. Being 26 and have grown up with all of this; and seeing where its going, makes me think the way I do.
I actually own a ps3, but hell all i use it for really is movies. Sad state of affairs
