Debating the PS3's worth

3:37 PM on 02.06.2007 | World Famous

Booty-touching Kevin Pereira and Attack of the Show held a mini-debate last night on The Loop to discuss the PlayStation 3's status among the ranks. Before you say, "Oh, but I'm tired of this debate," just hang on a sec. Watch the vid, digest the info, and weigh in on your thoughts.

My thoughts: Let's all calm down and wait a year or two before we declare anything a failure -- even my greatest love, the Wii. What do you think? Are you tired of the "PS3 is dead" mantra as well?

I just tune out any "Playstation 3 moar lik Gaystation 3 amirite?" chatter now. Next-gen is like a double-edged sword when it comes to gaming websites.

I am DONE with this debate. The PS3 is not a failure. I don't want ANY of the consoles to be failures. Can you imagine how boring things would get if there was only one console? We would be swamped with lameness from developers who know they can be lazy b/c there are no choices left. I think fanboys that pray for the demise of a console they do not like are being severely short-sighted.

it's insane...it has been 2 months and people are already directing failure traffic.
i read a post somewhere saying basically nintendo has failed to bring us a good console because of lack of virtual console games. so the wii is a failure because someone didn't get every virtual console game they wanted immediatley. imapatient noobizoids.

I think they hit it dead on. All the shortcomings of the PS3 thus far and the talk with it (while a bit early to tell) will plague the PS3 for the rest of its life. I think it's safe to say it'll never fully recover and it'll be years before Sony ever turns a profit with the system. I also think Blu-Ray is completely done. There's just more distributors in favor of HD-DVD, ie. porn. Cmon. The porn industry is HUGE. And HD-DVD is their future. Big blow to Blu-Ray (no pun intended; not a blow of pleasure).

@scrap, Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what you want, we're trying to talk about what's happening.

I agree with SP420 -- can it be that AotS has had something reasonable and intelligent? I think so. I agree with everything said in the Loop.

Is this the first time this has happened? I don't remember Gamecube's lack of success garnering so much attention, why are people paying so much attention to Sony's slow start? No one should be surprised, the thing costs six hundred fudging dollars and there aren't any good games. Maybe in the future there will be good games and then everyone will say "oops I wasted the last four months of my life in internet forums complaining about something that doesn't affect me"

i doubt its "dead" in the long run, but right now it sure seems it. noone wants to pay 600 bucks and not be able to play games w/ it. if MGS4 was a launch game, i may have even sucked it up and bought one. but nothing is coming out worthwhile anytime soon. (sadly the same thing w/ the wii) and you can only watch ricky bobby on blu ray so many times before sacha baron cohens parts stop being funny.

all it boils down to is the price. thats whats killing it.

Sony needs to live up to what they displayed at E3....especially with the Killzone and Metal Gear Solid trailers...if they don't...they will fail.

I'm also bored of the debate. We pretty much know that the price is killing it. Were the console 300 dollars people would be much more willing to take the risk and try it out. The inclusion of blu-ray as standard instead of an option was their biggest mistake. Their second has been to consistently feed us bullcrap instead of being honest.

They've beaten this horse enough, lets stop desecrating its corpse.

I agree though that the PS3 will need at least year though mostly more to catch up.

Time will tell.

I find a whole issue of EGM devoted this topic a bit redundant since the internet has had debate after debate with this subject, and nothing new has been covered.

Plus who reads gaming magazines anymore when you have Destructoid? *or any other website for that matter*

Okay maybe i missed the point but eh!

When they mentioned those big name game developers are starting to look into the 360 platform, I think that alone could be a potentially a huge issue for Sony. Like they said though, only time will tell.

I agree with Robert. Give the damn system time. If they hold their exclusive titles, then I will being buying it next year. MGS4 is more than enough reason to buy it at some point.

Scrap said it right.

basically we need more consoles, just to make the other consoles war against them. without the other consoles, sony or microsoft would slack off knowing that they are the only corp in it, so we wouldn't have good products or great games. war in gaming basically helps the customers.

SP420,

"I also think Blu-Ray is completely done. There's just more distributors in favor of HD-DVD, ie. porn."

Blu Ray titles are outselling HD-DVD titles at this very moment...
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/456

In fact, since the beginning of the year, Blu Ray has been outselling HD-DVD 2 to 1.

www.dvdempire.com also has a Blu-ray VS HD-DVD chart showing their sales rankings with Blu-ray leading right now... As I PS3 owner I have much faith in the console. It WILL have the games in time... look at the 360... it started out with crappy games too and now it has several great games which came out late last year that convinced me to finally buy it.

It en't extinct, it's just dormant. I do really dislike the ps3, it doesn't nearly live up to a fraction of the hype, and it's more expensive and less good than it ought be. It is however good enough to play games on, and it will get some good games eventually. Enough to catch up with the 360? At this point, I don't think so(at least for a couple of years). But you also have to factor japan into the equation. Unless MS enters into some manner of satanic pact, for the nihonjin the ps3 is the only HD choice. Yeah, I'm not really sick of the debate. I jes love to argue pointless shit.
The loop is also growing on me quite a bit(even with captain generic).

It will wind up coming down to the casual, not the hardcore that decide the end of this console war. Joe Football wants his Madden and wants it on a brand he can trust. He's played nothing but Playstation for past 10 years so that's what he is going for.

Peter Moore said it the best, that people need to wait until all three consoles are out on the shelve at a decent price. That's when the ultimate outcome of this console war will rear it's ugly head.

I was never really involved in the debate to begin with, but I am sick and tired of hearing it everywhere. Production issues, blu-ray, sixaxis ganking nintendo's controller et al. have been dissected and debated so that only one conclusion has been reached: we'll have to wait and see. And that conclusion was reached long before the damn console even launched. Can we finally just sit back, play some vids and let time do it's thang?

The debate also gave rise to the now-flogged 'OMG! WII FTW!11 PS34 SUXXES' joke posts where people made fun of slobbering fanboys.

In fact, let's all get some new material. Hey Dtoid, can you start covering unicorns? We'll try to come up with some new herd-mentalityisms to pepper your forums with.

Now, I believe it is too early to say that the PS3 is dead or not, although it is rather pathetic to see such a "hot" system on store shelves essentially everywhere.

But I will predict this. I know, its a very controversial view.

The N-Gage 2 will fail.

Flame on!

what did microsoft guy that one day: developers developers developers if they dont do anything ps3 will go kaputz but if they make 3 games that justify the purchase of a ps3 this year and its mainly needs to be this year otherwise they will drown in an ocean of bad press.

With the price too high for the main stream gamers who made PS2 such a success ( and PS2 outselling PS3 now ) .. less and less game exclusives.. ( I personally want shock in my controller ) .. and the year delay of their release behind Xbox 360.. Their in trouble.. They'll still be in 3rd place in one year.

By the time they lower the PS3 from 599 to 499..( if they are able to within one year ) MS will lower the Xbox price from 399 to 299 - which is within the price range of Wii "value" buyers..

PS2 which was released in China 2yrs ago is still enjoying good sales and Xbox 360 looks to be released in China soon.

The system is fine, it's the price that stinks. 600 bucks is just way too much. If I had a kid who was fourteen/fifteen and wanted a ps3, I would say..."Down payment on a car or video game system?" Once they lower the price, you will see them start selling.

I wouldn't buy one myself but I wouldn't mind someone buying it for me. Once worthwhile games come out or Sony stops shooting itself in the foot, then we'll see if the PS3 is dead.

The Harvard drop-outs Win again! These guys convinced the world that a computer was worthy. Game consoles used to be a separate entity from computers. Xbox 360 has changed that. The Wii=novelty, PS3=dumb people, Xbox 360=the cutting edge. Sales don't mean shit. Mainstream always takes time to catch up with the best. Japan doesn't mean shit. They are zombies to the enth degree. They will buy Sony and Nintendo till death. They are Dawn of the Dead mindless. Gamers like me decide who wins and who comes in 2nd.
Bottom Line is Sony and Nintendo have been surpassed by a superior company. They are the best, they employ the best and they deploy the best. If you don't like it, then you just don't get it. Xbox 360 is the new pleasure machine. Peep the games, the online, music, the entire entertainment experience. Recognize greatness now. Let the "experts" score the argument.

man people have some short attention spans if they're already predicting the death of a 4 month old system. i mean hell, it was at least a good year till the 360 became worth it's weight in 4 one hundred dollar bills. my guess is people and critics must have been blown away by Wii's amazing launch, 360's feet firm in the sand, and the bad publicity around PS3's launch , including the ebay whores.

i'm not a fan of sony (i say this alot here..), but some common sense will tell you all this bad hype about their failure is a bandwagon. let's save all the talk about failure until this upcoming holiday season once all 3 systems have enough games to duke it out fair and square.

i always rag on sony when i talk to my friends who own one. I still have a sore spot against them since their lies are responsible, along with EA, for killing the dreamcast. If sony didn't have the most popular console i probably wouldn't hate them so much. I like to root for the underdog.

plus i want more japanese games on the xbox, so sony's downfall would ultimately lead to more developers creating for microsoft.

In 2 years the PS3 will be a good system, "good" not great.
Xbox is kicking the shit out of everything and it's going to keep doing it, so if your a PS3 fanboy, your an idiot, your blind allegiance to a corporate name is all you have right now.

In two years let's talk
but for now YOUR ALL DONKS!!!

It's called a self-fulfilling prophecy. There are some slight problems at the moment, quite the same as other consoles had when they launched - at least it isn't as bad as the Red Ring of Doom. Anyhow, the media is so absorbed with spreading the idea that the PS3 is 'doomed' that it creates more FUD, which in turn exacerbates the problem.

Question : Is the PS3 doomed?
Answer : No. People don't have anything else to talk about, so bashing the PS3 and exagerating it's minor faults seems like the right thing to do.
