Debate: Heroes or No More Heroes? photo

As you've probably all heard by now, Heroes by Suda 51 for the Wii has been re-titled No More Heroes. The game puts you in the role of Travis Touchdown, an ordinary guy who wins a "Beam Katana" (Suda's words, not mine) in an online auction, and goes on to be ranked #11 by an organization called the UAA, which governs mercenaries. The game will apparently be open-ended to some extent, giving you the option of roaming about in a city known as Santa Destroy, as you try to hunt down the top ten UAA assassins and get to the #1 position.

That's not what I'm making this post for, though. You can access all this and more info via that link to 1UP above. What I am interested in, is seeing how many of you approve of the new graphical style of the game, as opposed to the one seen in the trailer that was released a few months back.

Hit the jump for screenshots of the old and new styles so you can compare.

Heroes 001

Helter Skelter, old style.

No More Heroes 001

Travis Touchdown, new style.

Heroes 002

Sylvia Christel, old style.

No More Heroes 002

A fight scene, new style.

Heroes 003

Travis, old style.

No More Heroes 003

Travis on a bike-type ... thingy. New style.

Personally, I was pretty attached to the old style. Killer 7 was an awesome game, and Heroes looked very similar. From the minute I watched the trailer, I was in love with the game design. This new style just doesn't seem to appeal to me for some reason. What do you guys think?

I was unaware of this game til a week ago....i think they both look awesome? The comparisons are pretty close, especilly the bottom 2....Hopefully there will be a little from column A and a little from column B

I'm excited in general. Suda Goichi is probably the most original, new mind in game design. Everything I've heard about the game makes it sound awesome. Killer7 is a great game, Contact was good (but I had really high expectations).

When I first saw the artstyle to Heroes I really wasn't sure if it'd be possible to have a game like that. There seemed to be a lot of post production work done on it.

That said, the style was cool.

The new art direction is a little more standard but I can dig it.

At any rate, I'm psyched for it.

You know, I was a little bummed out that we'd only get to play as Travis. If you watch the trailer, Helter Skelter looks pretty damn awesome himself. Hopefully he'll be an unlockable character or something.

The shift in style doesn't really bother me. I like the way that they've gone for a degree of realism, while still retaining a little cel shading.

The premise certainly sounds interesting. This looks to be the kind of third-party exclusive the Wii needs.

What's the difference? If the game rocks, then it could look like some 4-year old drew it in crayon for all I care.

Travis looks a little bit better, but I gotta agree with Ishaan on this, Helter Skelter looked awesome.

The shift in "style" annoys me a little, after seeing my friend play Killer 7, I really enjoyed the look of the cel shading, and now it looks as if they've taken out much of the cel shading in it.

I have to say that I like the old style better. Either way, it seems like an awesome concept. Still need to get Killer7...

You are right, it just doesnt stand out anymore. That first picture of Travis looks like hes in the world of GTA, hahaha. And also, maybe its just the screenshots, but the old travis looks cool and buff, the new one looks...like ryan seacrest.

The "old style" was just a prerendered concept demo thing, it's little suprise the game has changed in style since. It was shit cool though(think they could have found a better VA for travis, mind) but I'll reserve full judgement on the present look until I see it in motion.
Obviously the TGS demo looked better, but prerendered FMV does usually look better than gameplay footage.

The guy that gives you hints in killer7 is called Travis. Every time you see him on a different spot he's wearing a other shirt. Are we talking about the same Travis here?

As for the style it don't bother me, its a Suda51 story the guy is like a Hideo Kojima on steroids. I hope that "Project S" still is a reality a Sudu51/kojima game in the Snatcher world just sound to good to be true.

I prefer the old style, but the new one isn't so bad either. I absolutely LOVE that the city is called Santa Destroy. It's so over-the-top and ridiculous.

I think I preferred the original too, seemed to be much more moody and suited the dark storyline. Still the new one doesn't look bad and seeing Cell Shading in action is always better than stills.

I was more concerned with the mentioned controller implementation which didn't sound that innovative.

The game being 35% complete, this probably isn't a style shift thing as much as a graphical evolution thing. What with cel-shaded graphics being such a carefully artistic medium, they'll probably tweak it 2 or 3 more times before summer. In any case, it looks like it's going to the right place and I want it more than ever now. Totally surrealistic, completely uncomprehenisble, wicked awesome. Win.

I really don't think it's a style shift or anything, just the differences between the cutscenes and gameplay in addition to the game being just early in development. As long as they change Travis' VA, I don't really mind.

BTW, am I the only one spooked by Sylvia? She's too much sunshine for that business...

this game looks more of an Flower, sun and rain thing then killer 7 ( note: flower , sun and rain is an japanese game only relesed in japan ) ACK! I'm looking for this video of the game to show you but i can't seem to find it

anyway I don't care as long as the story is good and the game is fun I'm all for it

Personally I like the old style more because the newer one looks just too similar to GTA for my taste; not that GTA isn't one of my favorite games, its just that a new look for a similar style of game would have been refreshing
