Death threats do not equal free Gamertags photo

The very fact that Microsoft charges 800 MS Points just so a person can change their tag is pretty farcical, but one particular gamer feels more sore about it than anybody else. Dave Zatz tried to change the tag for free after he received an alleged death threat -- surprise surprise, Microsoft didn't give out.

"I’ll kill you in real life with a real gun," was the threat made over a game of Call of Duty: World at War. While Zatz suggests he never felt the threat was too serious, he nevertheless felt a change of tag would be wise.

"So I gave the Xbox Live support folks a call," Zatz explains. "And it turns out a death threat doesn’t exempt you from the Gamertag change fee, which runs 800 Microsoft Points. As Microsoft doesn’t actually match Points to dollars or sell 800 Point bundles via Live, I ended up paying $12.50 for 1,000 Points to fund my new identity."

The writer feels that death threats must be common, since the Live support staff didn't seem too concerned. Of course, the support staff is never concerned about anything. In fact, this whole story reeks of someone who has never dealt with Microsoft before. If he's shocked that the company nickel and dimes you for a name change and has a crappy customer support line, I can't wait for him to find out the really awful stuff MS does.

Oh thats great. They have no problem changing it if someone finds the name offensive, but when you get a freakin death threat your name isn't of concern to them

it's Xbox live we're talking about. On a CoD title. I'm sure all sorts of threats are being thrown about, along with racial slurs and homophobic remarks. Doesn't make it right, but some things nowadays should be taken with a grain of salt. chances are it's a very poor attempt at trash-talk.

Guy's a pussy if he thinks there's a chance of this happening. I certainly wouldn't change my name over a threat.

But that's just cause I don't want to spend 10 bucks. I'd rather live in fear.

The only time MS would ever care is when this "dead" man's family discovers that they're still being charged for Live 8 months after he died haha.

Easy way of changing it for free. Have some of your live friends file offensive name complaints and you will not be able to sign into live until you change it.

800ms points for name change is bullshit.

If it's a proven case, they should change it for free, and slap the guy making that threat. But anybody could claim to receive a threat to change their tags. It's understandable that MS charges for name change, they want consistency and some people at least should behave better. If it was free, people would change their gamertags to have a go at being an asshole for the fun of it, and change back to their Dr. Hyde personna at will. At least this is keeping some of those guys on the fence.

Also, it is not possible to change your name in PSN, once set, forever set, at least MS makes it a possibility.

The first time I ever played on Live, I was playing Forza 2 and someone threatened to kill me. Hours and hours of violent games from CoD4 to Halo 3, and no one has ever threatened to literally kill me in those violent games. I never even considered changing my gamertag. I was just confused because someone wanted to kill me over a game of Forza and figured it was just another form of trash talk.

So how is changing ones name going to protect anything. If someone makes a threat you have to assume they have had a chance to come your profile etc already. And the only thing and name change may stop is them stalking you game to game.

But them seeing you online gives them no info on your whereabouts so if you play smart and not give out personal info you are fairly safe. Well you might also want to make sure your friends are on the same page too if you alow others to see your friends. But again you have to assume they have already gathered this information at the same time of the threat and if you feel it is sincere contact the authorities.

Lol, I whooped some guy in SSF2THDremix, and he reported my gamertag as being offensive. My gamertag was sxuallyactive85, not too offensive I think. The best part is I was meaning to change my gamertag for the past year, so the guy really did me a favor. Its like he gave me $10 for whooping his ass!

I've been called everything and been threatened to have my life ended, doesn't bother me though. Usually I turn what the person said to me and give them a witty retort and that usually shuts them up.

If that worked then everyone would want to kill everyone so everyone could change their name.

Why should name changes be free? You pick a name, stick with it. You can't change your name for free in other online games (e.g. WoW) or even your real name.

Next time, use something more anonymous.

Microsoft has the right to charge whatever it wants. However, I have the right to call them cunts for it.

"The myriad of people who paid $200 for a 360 are in for a rude awakening." What? and like others have said just get your friends to file complaints against your name.
