Still, that's one of the better maps, and I would strongly suggest that anyone who didn't get into the earlier beta try out Operations mode. It's freakin' awesome! You can find me at CornflakeJustice on the PSN if you're interested in partying up.
That's not a beta test.
So either Sony wants us to expect some bugs, or the word "beta" is having its meaning hijacked.
Oh well, the usually un(der)educated gaming masses won't probably give a crap one way or another. Based on the horrendous abuses against the English language I see in almost every online forum, correct grammar has become passé.
Who am I kidding, this is a sad, pathetic semantics argument being made by someone desperately trying to find someone to bitch about. Who cares what it's called? Especially when data from this test can lead to a day 1 patch adding balance that the limited beta test audience couldn't find? Someone buy this man a puppy if THIS is the line in the sand he draws.
After all, if they find some online gamebreaking bug in this "demo", they can release a day 1 update of the game...
October 10, 2007: Team Fortress 2 is released as part of the Orange Box
December 2, 2010: Team Fortress 2 open Beta is released
It doesn't even ensure a complete, functional product anymore.
Or is gold some codeword that managed to go over my head over the last 28 years of my life that means "finished"?
It might just be a demo but who knows really what Sony could be testing if this is an actual beta/stress test.. I mean all we know is that they're using Beta as a term to make people who download and play it feel more important but honestly either way they could get some feedback from this that could push back the release of the game..
Yes you can. Just because the game has gone gold does not mean the MP Beta they're releasing is the gold build or even a cert build. It could quite literally (and most likely is) be a beta build. Please stop arguing semantics about topics you don't understand.
Gold means a game is essentially finished, no more changes will be made to it. It is ready to get shipped out.
Sure, but Daggerfall literally had an infinitely/randomly generated map. There were bound to be bugs.
New Vegas is literally a fraction of the size - especially since there are even more bugs, four patches later, than the entirety of Fallout 3, there's little excuse. New Vegas is a new benchmark for bugs. While the faction system was totally awesome, it contributed to an unprecedented amount of game breaking glitches, which forced you to restart.
Keep in mind New Vegas is my second favorite game of all time :D
The game might have gone gold but that doesnt mean the game servers have gone "gold". That's called a beta test.
All in all you'd think someone would be wise enough to change the term away from something that ultimately ends up with a double meaning when used.
In that case then I can't figure they mean anything but beta=demo.. Which is completely off base...
A beta with closed access is a Private Beta, one with exclusive access is a Public beta, while access for anyone/everyone is an Open beta.
Which scenario is better:
Scenario 1: No beta because you're gold. Release product and have people complaint about an unfound bug.
Scenario 2: Beta before release. People then buy product and have to download a small patch. Game is going 1.01.
In both case, everybody will be complaining, but truly which scenario do you prefer when you buy game? Me, I prefer the small download and bug free game (until another one creeps out). Like most people, I miss the time when games were on ROMs and could not be patched, but today, we have to live with it. And getting into a beta while other could not is always something fun to brag about anyway!
