Dear 360 owners, don't use unauthorized memory devices photo

Planning to update your 360 as part of the Microsoft Preview Program that is kicking into gear next week so that you can hang out with the cool kids over Twitter and do other awesome stuff that people not in the preview program can't do? Sounds awesome for you. We'll keep our fingers crossed that you get a code. But wait, is that a memory card without a licensed for Xbox 360 logo on it? Oh no, good sir, you are in trouble. Quick get your saved games off it or you won't be able to use them anymore.

In an effort to make more money (I couldn't even think up another reasonable excuse to make a strike through joke with) Microsoft has announced that the coming update for the 360 will ensure that only authorized memory units function with the 360. This means that after your 360 is updated you won't be able to access any saved games on any form of memory that is not officially authorized. Anyone going to have to scramble out to the store and pick up a new 360 memory card that costs twice as much for half the space?

Jesus. If I were a consumer trying to buy a new console today it would be a matter of asking what mind numbingly stupid handicaps do you want on your console?

No HD and subpar games? Get a Wii! Want questionable console stability and be pricegouged for everything on your console? Get a 360! Care to have poor online experiences and shoddy ports of multiplatform games? Get a PS3!

So many options.

MS is totaly right to do this, ppl who don't use MS memory are mainly hackers.

Wow, dick move of the year.
And let this be a lesson to fanboys: companies do NOT care about you, they just want to you buy their crap.
If you check the blog it also said "Hard Drives," so everybody modding external/internal hard drives instead of buying microsoft's uber-expensive one are getting the shaft too.
This is seriously unbelievable, especially with their competition allowing USB sticks and swapping in and out of any laptop harddrive. Do you really think we want your licensed products over the freedom to choose? That's idiotic.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. Microsoft needs to rethink their business strategy, or Sony's going to stomp all over them in the next year.

i'm sorry -- i just recently bought the reduced elite, so i'm new to the 360'sperience. why do you need memory cards for saved games? can you not transfer save files via thumb drives?

I don't have or need a Memory Card, but that's just fucked up. I wonder how the 3rd party companies are gonna feel? Especially since some out there hold 3x the space of an official one, therefore making it....superior. But I guess Microsoft doesn't like that word.

No, you can't, you need to buy microsofts super expensive memory card, they charge around 30 dollars for 512 mb! And it only works with the 360......

I'm sick of ms, once I find somewhere I can sell my 360, I'll fucking do it

That's ... idiotic. It doesn't even make perfect business sense: Canon, HP, and other companies that make printers are doing fine with knockoff ink cartriges floating around. I'm with BluDesign (except the subpar games part).

No

This sucks, but few people use memory devices anyway. Microsoft could argue that this is to reduce gamesaving etc, but it would be a weak excuse seeing as how their memory devices are glorified USB devices.

Sorry for anybody about to lose out.

"Anyone going to have to scramble out to the store and pick up a new 360 memory card that costs twice as much for half the space?"

Actually, the 360's 512mb card is $30, or roughly the price of a regular 16gb flash drive. So it's the same price for 1/32 the space. Fuck Microsoft.

Also $150 for a 120gb HDD is fucking laughable. It's actually hard to find regular harddrives that small anymore. And $150 will get a terabyte or two. I despise Microsoft's arbitrary proprietary bullshit. I'm insulted every time i see my harddrive filling up again because i'm not going to spend $1.20 per GB like a fucking idiot. Things simply do not cost that much.

I was talking about the US price, I live in mexico so prices have a huge difference, those crappy 512mb cards cost around 60dollars here.

Yes, we're not exactly surprised. We just don't understand how Microsoft can be so oblivious to its customers' needs.

I wish MS would stick to software so it's limited to minor, correctable errors like leaving "Amaterasu" out of the Office dictionary.

Shit like this is part of why I am not buying any of their 360 games digitally, among other things. Not only are the digital games ripoffs to begin with, but the extra price of buying a memory device with any kind of space on it is absolutely ludicrous, especially when I was able to put a 500 GB in my PS3 for about $60. It's insulting to their consumers, who are partly at fault and keep letting them get away with it.

*shrug* big deal, so they're clamping down on non-MS kit. You play with an MS machine, storing MS data... why can't MS determine what devices you can or can't use?
With releases like Datel's sd-card compatible device coming out offering potential aids to piraters, it doesn't surprise me one bit.
Just because before you figured you shouldn't pay what MS asks, and now you find out you have to... quit crying about it. "It's not fair!", well no, life isn't. Boohoo.

The point is this isn't to stop piracy I promise, as the way to get piracy working right now requires opening the system and installing custom firmware, so believe me pirates don't give a shit about this. This is just another attempt at MS screwing the consumer and forcing them to pay for overpriced shit.

Blocking all USB devices would be insanely stupid, they'll do it when they haven't had any bad ideas for a while. Blocking USB devices has connotations beyond system corruption, it would stop people using the 360 as a multimedia playform without using Windows Media Centre. And that would kill it alltogether because Media Centre is fucking stupid.

Except that no one is fucking with MS, they are just greedy fuck holes who do this shit to further their own agenda. I didn't know using some third party memory card that has 4x the room at less than half the price of MS's options was fucking with them. It's called exploring your options, why pay twice as much for something when there are better options? This is a monopoly on their products, but whatever it's their system and all they are doing is making the PS3 slim more appealing to their already installed user base and people who have yet to buy a next gen system.

That's a little insulting towards the PS3, claiming that it's best advert is a dick move made by microsoft concerning the xbox 360.

I would have thought Uncharted 2 would be a better advert, but what would I know? You're the one posting inflammatory remarks!

This makes sense but for those who have bought a new hard drive or a pephireal that they think is "Microsoft property" but isn't, well, it's not very fair. They'll lose everything and most of them won't know what hit them. They'll update, then try to play they're saved game... Then presumably freak out and block up Microsoft's phone lines.

This isn't good for anyone.
